History lesson

NPW - THE BEGINNING
NPW5 was invented in 1993. The original planform already existed as a parachute in the early 70's. We used the technical concept of the parachute and build a stuntkite after studying the original technical information. The first full scale, experiments dated from 1974. After preliminary experiments in the windtunnel of Langley at the NASA Dryden site, there were helicopter drops and tower drops. Goal was to find a controllable parachute for landing Appolo capsules on earth after a journey in space.

The parachutes used in the Appolo flights were unprecise, therefore the landing spot for the capsules was unpredictable. By using all-controlable parachutes the rescue operation of the crew members could be safer and more efficient. Although the testresults were statisfying the parachute never made it to real use. The NASA cancelled the Apollo flights. This ment the end of the research for the NASA Parawing project as well.

Jumping with NPW
There was also an attempt for commercial use. The parachute was produced for parajumping under the name Eagle. But after several incidents with severe injuires, the use of the parachute for jumping purposes ended quietly. Today parapente pilots use a "Dactyl" as a rescue vehicle. The basis for this chute is taken from the NPW model 2.

After a period of almost twenty years we discovered the original NASA drawings. From the first contact with these reports we fell in love with the concepts and imagined that it would be great to transform the parawing to a kite. So we started to develop a bridle system for the use as a kite. In 1993 the concept was worked out completely.

During succesfull testflying the kite we discovered the potential of the kite as power engine and we decided to register the concept worldwide at the intellectual property registration database of WIPO/OMPI, Geneva as a kite. Since we build a kite and not a parachute we were validated to do so. Up onto today we are producing NPW5 as well as NPW9 models in various sizes.

Explaining the name
We still use the acronime NPW pointing to the original planform test. NPW stands for NASA ParaWing. The "5" indicates the original planform we used for our concept. There were 9 models tested at NASA. We also tried the other planforms as a kite but model 5 was suited best for kite purpose with minimal effort in production. With the concept we started a revolution in the kite industries since there was no such simple, sparless chamberless concept.

Nowerdays there are more commercial stuntkites using the same aerodynamic concept. The "preliminary" reports can be found at the LARC database on the NASA website.

What will the future bring
We believe that the concept of single skin, spareless kites is only just beginning. We unraffled the secrets of the construction of the known NPWs and are working on better and more multipurpose designs. Additionally we are developing "hardware" like mountainboards as well.

In this section we will keep you informed whenever there are new developments to share with you. Meanwhile have fun flying your NPW!

From what I have read I thought that the npw9 made for a better kite, in fact I think I remember Susan saying that she only makes npw9s now.
