I'm still stuck on how you figure out the depth without actually getting out on it ?
Personally, I won't go out until I see tracks from someone more brave !

I generally wait to go out until the ice fisherman are on the lakes so I can see the depth from their holes, but baring that, you are generally safe
after 2 weeks of day and night time temps below freezing. That will create 6-8" of ice depending upon lake depth, wind conditions and how low the
temps go.

Thought I'd bring this to the top for the season. Especially hits home 'cuz we've got a friend just outside the city waiting, freezing on a lakeshore
hoping one of their friends is found after taking off on a snowmobile onto a lake that was only 2cm thick with ice.
