JIBE Talking!
I'm pleased to announce the new
JIBE
...the First Annual Jekyll Island Buggy Expo.
September 26th through the 28th, Kite Beach, Jekyll Island, Georgia.
A loosely organized buggy rally and fun-fly. I've just finished firming up the dates and major points with the Jekyll Isalnd Authority and the
Georgia Highway Patrol.
Proceeds will benefit the Georgia Sea Turtle Center (and private tour will be included one morning during high tide)
Come out and play.
Late afternoon distance runs (4 miles each way, wind permitting).
Chase and taunt the Georgia Highway Patrol without getting arrested!
Much to do for the whole family.
More info at...

Hey Angus
Looks sweet! Fiona and I have been emailing back and forth looking at photos of Jekyll island ever since you talked about it at NABX.
Not sure if I can do the long drive down from Canada for a weekend, but I can dream - and you never know...
Way to go putting this event together.

I guess we could call it "Sunrise Beach"? This is a fantastic beach. The heavy crowds will be gone for the winter. We will be there for sure. I'll
have a buggy by then if I can quit tearing up my stuff. I hope there will be lots of kiters there to pump up the fun.
Angus, you mentioned proceeds. Are we going to "pass the hat" for the turtles or will your auction be what generates the proceeds?

A small percentage of the registration fee will be reserved for the Turtle Center. Depending on sponsorship there will be some raffles, too.
I also have one of the customized Flexifoil buggies used by Team Riders Slawek Krawze, Will McKean and "Stupid" Dave Roberts at NABX. It will go on
the block shortly and will have their signatures embroidered on the seat- truly one-of-a-kind. I'lle use the sale (probably eBay) to publicize the
event and will direct the entire sale priice to the Turtle Center.
We share the beach with the fellas, so it's the right thing to do. Jekyll Island is a nesting area for Loggerhead and other species, and the Turtle
Center is unique to the east coast- complete with "Turtle E/R" and rehabilitation center.

I doubt I can make it, but from talking to Angus in the past... the small registration fee and it's donation to the Turtle Center will help to keep
this a very kite friendly beach, along with keeping the kiting community in a positive light. Any time kiters can help with a local cause, and enjoy
what we are all passionate about... is a wonderful thing.
Hope everyone who can find a way there makes this a premier kiting event.

There is a nice campground on the north end of the island (but you need to make reservations, as they book up) Nightime activity on the beach is
restricted since that is when the sea turtles could come ashore and nest. I think late September is just outside of that season but they are still
careful. Even the local suspension bridge has special lights on it so as not to disrupt the turtles' navigation.

Thank you for your patience everybody, but the JIBE Registration is now open here...
http://www.coastalwindsports.com/JIBE2008.html#3
Registration is treated as a purchase on the secure site, but is a pass-through with all proceeds going to the event. The best I can do on cost is
$45 with the Sea Turtle Center Tour and the full sit-down group dinner Satruday night with four entree choices.
Registration on-site will be $50. The more people that pre-register, the better I can plan for y'all. Extra Turtle Center Tour and dinner tickets
are available too.
Only those with a buggy need to pay full registration.
Thanks

Jekyll Island will spoil you, but come on anyway. I look forward to putting faces with some names. Two trips in one month is like a pot of gold for
me. That along with having my own buggy these trips is just going to be too much. Sometimes I think about Angus living 10 minutes away and how cool
that would be to just pop over after dinner for a buggy run.

I hope to add a lot more photos from the event!
Recent updates to the JIBE page:
New map of the central part of Jekyll Island showing Kite Beach, the Historic District, nearby hotels and shopping.
Attendee/ Registration list (Bobby I put you guys on cause I know you have hotel reservations). I know of some known names I'll be able to add soon,
but I hope to get more new first-timers to Jekyll !!

I will register and pay fees soon, but yes we are in for sure. We had various wheel taxes, insurance, and a set of tires for the car hit us this
month. Not to mention the appropriations for the flexi buggy. This tightened up the ways and means committee of one. We are Jekyll bound twice in
September though for sure.

A few have asked about the condition of Jekyll Island Beach following Tropical Storm Fey.
Well low tide was in the evening yesterday so I went out late afternoon with the buggy for a thorough inspection. Water levels are still high, so the
high tide was very full and the 6 miles of salt marsh along the causeway out to Jekyll was still flooded. At the beach there was hard-pack sand all
the way up to the dunes and a lot of reeds, seaweed and other ditrius piled high on the beach, and it was clear that the surf had been well up into
the dunes, but there was no erosion.
By the time the tide had receeded enough for me to set up, the breeze had settled to just 7-10 mph but a perfect ESE- dead 90 degrees to the shore.
So out came the 8.3m PL Reactor.
There were not a lot of people, but as luck woul have it, packs of toddlers to the north and south of Kite Beach kept me boxed in to about half mile
run for while- still just fine.
By 5 pm the toddlers were gone and I had the whole run- as much of 4 miles each direction as I wanted. There were still packs of beach-goers and
picnic set-ups, but the beach was getting big enough that I could pass them down-wind at full speed with more than a kite-line distance, or if
closer, I could raise my kite high enough for a moment so that my lines never passed over their heads.
The light winds left me maxed out on the GPS at 23 mph, but with a wide open beach and after 4 days holed up by that stupid storm, I could not have
been happier.

I'll soon be mailing out event materiall and Island parking passes to registrants, so if you are planning to attend but have not gotten around to
registering, this week would be a good time. See link below for more info and a link to registration.
I have firmed up the private group tour of the Sea Turtle Center for Saturday the 27th at 11 am. It will take about an hour and is half mile away
from Kite Beach so we will be out on the beach when the tide is still dropping to full low tide in mid afternoon.- perfect.
Dinner is firmed up at Blackbeard's Seafood Restaurant overlooking Kite Beach. diners will have a choice of four entrees including meat, chicken,
seafood and vegitarian options.
HQ demo day went well, so I'm looking forward to seeing some faces back againa and some new faces.

Registration packets with maps and parking passes are in the mail tomorrow for delivery by Tuesday/ Wednesday.
Each packet has three one-day parking passes. When you arrive on the island, hand in as many as you need for either a one, two or three day pass,
depending on the length of your stay. We are only invoiced for passes turned in.
The Atlantic tropics are quiet for us with no storm activity, but please keep on thinking of our friends in the Gulf Coast.
