short of driving to the playa where have you buggied in or near los angeles, ca

I live in Encino and there's not really that much open area around here. I usually fly at Balboa Park after work and there's usually a light southeast or west wind (around 5-12mph). Unfortunately, the wind is full of holes and very inconsistent. But for me, it's better than nothing.

I haven't tried Santa Monica or South Bay beaches but from what I know, there's not a lotta hard pack and at this time of the year, the beaches are very crowded and I would be very surprised if they didn't have some type of restrictions in place.

There are a few beaches in Oxnard that can be pretty fun, but most of them blow sideshore, great for the water, not so good for buggying. I'm going to bring my buggy to Port Hueneme in Oxnard this weekend and try to convince my friend to do a downwinder with me (it's about 2 miles but I've never went the whole way before). But the tide is not going to allow much room so that might be out of the question. Anything < 2ft tide and there's some room (well 20-40ft).

Unfortunately, there's nothing that I've found thats quite like the playa for wind and wide open spaces.

Do a google search for El Mirage Dry Lake Bed. Also, make sure you go to weather channel and check for wind....it seems like it's been pretty calm there the last few days. But when it blows, it's so nice!! If you do a check for Lancaster, CA it seems that gives a more accurate picture of what the wind is doing at the actual lake bed.

Finally, there is a daily use fee now. Also, you can always call (760) 388-4411 for current lake bed status (i.e. they close it when it's wet).
