"Off Season" Buggy Projects

With IBX 2022 now in the rear view mirror, I am sadly back in my buggy "off season" once again. It gets way too hot to buggy on the Ivanpah playa during the summer so I'm out of commission for a while.

I've got a number of small DIY buggy projects going. I was having some spring-pin breakage in my foot pegs to the point where I was packing spares in my kit. Inspired by some pictures I saw on a buggy back end I wanted to pin my foot pegs with removable wire pegs. I don't have a drill press and the parts I needed to drill through were stainless steel so I went with some Cobalt drill bits and packed a lot of patience. This morning I finished up the last two holes allowing for the pins to pass completely through and clip. Ta-da!

I know this is child's play for the actual machinists on PKF, but for me this was an accomplishment without specialized tools and I feel pretty good about it in my own silly way. :frog:

I thought I'd start a thread here and see if others would also post about little projects they've got going, big or small! I started extra-small. :karate:

It doesn't appear that your pictures are posting properly. bugymangp. Welcome to the joys of our little forum's tech. I see you have been a member for nearly 20 years (wow!) so you've no doubt seen this for years. For what it's worth, I use Photobucket as a repository for pictures that I link to. Yes, it costs a couple of bucks a year, but not too much. There are surely other ways to get around this.

I love the powder coating. I've toyed with doing my buggy but feel vulnerable to chips and the permanence of my color choice.

Thanks Bobby! I also had the chipping worries. After three IBX weeks it seems to be holding up remarkably well. I have some minute rub off at the tips of my forks where I bolt across the front axle but otherwise everything looks great.

My buggy is a standard PL BigFoot+ front and back with their "wide" axle (PL parts are SS). The middle and seat are an aftermarket Van Nguyen VTT special upgrade. He used mild steel square and round tube stock and powder coated them a textured Raven Black. So... I had a local shop match the color and texture for the PL SS parts. Worked out well IMHO.

Finished! (Right..... that makes as much sense as N+1....)

In all, I replaced the headset bearings, drilled and pinned the footpeg posts, added triglide slides on all webbing, added one more SS locking washer next to the bolt head on the rear wheels, lengthened the seat tube (my knees were to bent; I know, TMI) and lastly, replaced my tires with some beautiful golf cart tires (thanks John; Cerebite!).

Nice looking bug. You did say you wanted to go with the pins on the foot pegs. Looks like it worked out well. Good Job.
