At that particular spot; any kite restrictions? Is the beach usually to crowded to get up and down? How often is the wind lined up right with the shoreline? Get enough wind to buggy often? Is the tide a factor there?

We are in the hot humid no wind summer now. So I have 2 solid months to wait out waiting for the first cool days in September to start back up again.

This time of year is not the windy season here or in many parts of the country. We did have a pretty good turnout at JIBE including a number of young, new riders.

Cherry Point North Myrtle Beach

So far no restrictions I know of. The beach police ride by often and don't seem to mind. From around low tide to 1-2hr after low tide the area is pretty good. Most beach goers don't walk way out there to pick a spot and at low tide there is no soft sand out there. Sometimes people pick a spot that is kinda in my way. When the wind is SSW (very common in the summer) or SSE I usually go (10 min drive from my house). In the winter it is very empty but the wind is usually from the north which is not to good. Even when conditions are ideal I am limited by a pier on one side and an inlet (water) on the other side. I would guess the distance is about a 1/4 mile.

A couple of weeks ago, a rare combination of events occurred (low tide, early, beach not crowded yet, and a good onshore wind). I was able to ride south of the two cherry grove piers and was able to ride about 2-3 mi stretches of the beach until it got too crowded.

I see quite a few water kiters setup their kites on crowded beaches. So far the police don't seem to mind and everyone I have seen so far knew what they were doing but it seems risky to me. I have the equipment to kite on the water and a guy who rides at the point is willing to help. So far I am still chicken.

Anybody ever kite using a SUP board? I plan to learn to SUP for exercise and have seen some youtube vids of people using a kite?

Forget the SUP, unless you intend on wing foiling. You will have trouble holding an edge and staying upwind, and they are far too cumbersome to turn. Get a kite specific surfboard - they are smaller and reinforced - you will beat the crap out of a normal surfboard. Or just get a kiteboard. If you are just learning in water, get something wide and not too much rocker. A light wind board (tall, flat wide) will get you riding all summer. Take your friend up on his offer, water is a blast, and gets you kiting 1000 percent more. Good luck!

I have a cabrinha prodigy 148 kite board (never used) and a cabrinha switchblade 10m, never flown. I think they are now about 8 yr old. An old college friend who now runs Jupiter Kite shop in FL hooked me up with the deal. I thought I could learn on Ft. Supply Lake just outside of town (Woodward OK). Is this board the kind you describe?

I also have a Peter Lynn water foil 2.6 kite that can be relaunched from water. It produces pretty good power. I was thinking of trying it in the water for body dragging. I also have a peter lynn sarc860 (never flown) and I made my own bar setup so I am not sure how/if it will fly well. It too is supposed to be water friendly?

My aim is twice a month for 2-3 hours at a time (due to physical limitations.)
And I must say that despite CoviD-19 the wheater has been nice for me
in 2020 and 2021 I've been out on that average...

Jason - your board should be fine - I think it's about a 42 width? It will probably be heavier than more modern boards (which only matters if you're carrying it or jumping). I would think for summer you want a bigger kite (or a bigger light wind board) - 10m is for @15-25 knots. Depends on your weight as well. You need a lot more power on water than on land. Supposed to be a great kite, haven't tried. The 10m would be fine for body dragging if there's enough wind to keep it up. Not sure I would use the sarc until you know what you're doing. We should probably move this to another thread if you want to ask more questions. Lots of folks are on water as well as land here.
