I've been wanting to get to Ivanpah since 2010, just never had the time off work. I am going to JIBE this year so I'm trying to figure out how to convince the Mrs. to let me go to IBX as well. My personal best on Jekyll Island is 48.6 mph on sand, I'd love to see what I can hit on the playa.

Whupp! Paul speaks great truths here . You should listen to him. It is getting closer and closer. Four nights for me this year (up from 3 both of the last two years). My bride has her birthday (29th I think) on April 2nd so I will make the drive early in the AM of the 3rd and make it in time for first rides Tuesday. Staying through Saturday this year. Stoked!

We're thinking about turning this event into more of a family vacation.
As such, I think basing ourselves in Vegas rather than the exciting metropolis of Primm would offer more access to touristy and relaxy type endeavours for the non-buggy types.
Last year we ended up making the drive into Vegas most evenings to eat and look around anyway, so I'd be making the same trip, just commuting daily to the playa and back.
Has anybody done this?
I hate the idea of giving up the $14 a night room at Bills. Does anybody know where I can match that in Vegas?:dunno::dunno::crazy::lol:
The Easter long weekend won't help make the rates any more reasonable I suppose.
Please feel free to chime in.
Thanks,
colin

I would be pretty reluctant to stay anywhere in Vegas that asks only $14 a night. I suspect that would be the same rate as management offers their other, err, "guests" as an hourly rate. :o

Colin,

Give them the car, bring a tent and camp out with us!

There are plenty of people that will let you shower at the hotel. Or, do like me and stay one night in the hotel to shower and catch up with emails. Better yet, ignore the emails!

Anybody know if you can get a buggy on an airplane? How about an ATB? Would a longboard work at IBX?

Randy - I like where you are going with this line of thinking - come on out!!!

I can't well comment on the transportation of a buggy in a plane but I can say that I have seen all manner of wheeled vehicles, boards, skates, etc. out there. If it has wheels and the playa has wind you can make it work.

The thing to keep in mind is the surface. It is rock hard dried mud. Wonderfully smooth in a lot of spots, but quite a bit rougher in others. Here is a nice picture of what to me looks like a pretty rough patch of mud.

[img][/img]

Because of this sort of bumpy surface, I would think ATB tires that are in the 6-9" diameter are what you want and you want them inflated as compared to hard material like street skateboards have.

Here is the sort of ATB that I'm thinking would be best out there:

https://reallygoodebikes.com/products/mbs-pro-95-mountainboa...

I'm not advocating for this particular board; rather, I'm just using it as an illustrative example.

The other thing to consider Randy is that the surface is like 40wt sandpaper, but at least it's as hard as concrete. That means when (sorry, not if) you fall on it at speed and you aren't protected with lots of plastic courage that it will likely wreck your whole day.

When I was out there with skates on I was decked out from head to toe. Others go with far less on their bodies, but for me, load me up!

As for buggies, I would happily share mine with you as I'm sure others would as well. There are always land sailors and buggies lying around just begging to be taken for a spin. I'm sure a nice guy like you with plenty of beer in hand could always find a nice ride. :D

I just booked Joey and myself!
Joey and I will be arriving mid week the week before IBX. His school break doesn't coincide. He'll fly home and Roberta will take his place. We'll be staying at Bill's first, and then move in to Vegas and I'll come out for the days. We may have to leave before the banquet to get home for the Monday after IBX as we'd like to take the scenic coastal route back up to the northland.

Hey Morrie, Do you know if there is a Buffalo Bills code I can use for part of the week before IBX, and pretend to be a land sailor for a few days?:ninja:
Or is it worth it? I don't know what the discount is...
