JIBE 2017 on the way [edit 3/14]

Hey Gang

I am finalizing the event permit applications for JIBE 2017. All looks good for the TENTH JIBE!

This just in: JI Authority officially signs off on JIBE 2017 (after now requiring a Letter Of Permit from the GA Dept. of Natural Resources

JIBE Website timelines are updated and current for 2017. Just some of my map graphics have to be updated.

Remember the dates: Monday May 8th through Friday May12th. Times this year are listed as 11: am to 6:pm daily as tides are earlier this year but we know that this times are largely academic and are for insurance and permit purposes. Outside of these times we are on our own for liability issues.

Event is listed on the NAPKA Website

Remember, to register for JIBE, it's easy...
  1. Join or renew membership with NAPKA ($30)
  2. Register for the event on NAPKA web site (free for members)
  3. Fill out a Waiver and send it to me or bring with.

T-shirts and other collateral souvenirs are not included with registration. Davis Cheeks will again join us to develop and offer JIBE-wear independently. He has always done a great job with high quality and reasonable prices. Stickers are cool, too. This is the TENTH annual JIBE, so we can't wait to see what Davis come up with.

Other news about the event and Island this year...

Latitude 31 and the Rah Bar (restaurants on the waterway pier) are gone, victims of Hurricane Matthew. they will be replaced by a new venture by the Jekyll Island Club Hotel, but likely not in time for JIBE this year.

Restaurant 685 (formally Sea Jays) located in the marina near the waterway bridge, is gone, victims of themselves. Good news is that Zachry's Seafood and Steak is opening there by the end of March under the name "Zachry's River House". Zachry's was originally on the island but relocated to the mainland near exit 29 when the old shopping center was torn down. They are one of our favorite local restaurants and I'm sure they will do well at this great venue on Jekyll.

By the time of JIBE, there will be another new hotel, just south of the Westin and retail village. It is operated by the Jekyll Island Club Hotel.

There is a new Restaurant at the Holiday Inn Resort. Joan and I had dinner there the other night and it was just OK. Prolly better for lunch. The poolside cafe there ("The Anchor") is still good for breakfast, lunch & dinner with great casual island ambiance and dog-friendly.

Like last year, there will be no overnight Kite-Fort, so nightly breakdowns and taking gear will be required. This turned out to be not a problems last year, as it was a great way to hang out.

Alcohol is still OK on the beach, just NO GLASS. and watch for dehydration. We will have free cold water all week as usual.

NEW SHOPPING VENUES IN BRUNSWICK...
Sam's Club, Academy Sports (also Hobby Lobby and Home Goods), all located in new center off Rt. 25 Spur/ Golden Isles Pkwy, just south of I-95 Exit 38

Need anything else? Let me know. I will add more as it comes up as well. Looking Forward!

Angus

Thanks for all the hard work to get us all set up Angus!

So - I'm taking bets.

My orthopedic surgeon thinks I won't be healed up in time for JIBE2017.

I disagree.

Distal bicep tendon rupture repair surgery.

A kitten could kick my ass now - if he came at my right side.

Out of the brace 2/28, start lifting little things 4/1.

That's plenty of time, right? I mean, worst case, someone launches for me and I strop in, right?

What's the worst that could happen?

Me Too!

I just wanted to let you guys know that I'm coming as well. I'm sorting out my plane tickets and trying to find a buggy small enough to carry on the plane. For now it looks like I'll be flying Turkish Airlines through Istanbul and possibly borrowing a Parastorm buggy from Red Sky.

Even though I've posted intermittently on this forum for a few years, I've never met any of you guys and I'm looking forward to it. I grew up in North Carolina and have fond memories of time spent on the East Coast beaches. Every time I come home I've been dying to get out a buggy and now I'll have my chance.

See Y'all soon!

I was wondering about a few things:

Is anyone else going to be at the campsite? Is it possible to walk from the buggy site to the campsite or will I have to break my buggy down every time?

My web page had not refreshed since your previous post so I just saw your questions.

There will likely be other JIBE attendees at the campsite, as it is really popular. JIBE folks are usually evenly split between local hotels, vacation house rentals and the campsite. The campsite is on the north end of the island about 2 1/2 miles or 4 km from the JIBE staging area, so a walk may not be convenient. Most people break down their buggies in some fashion, but the max speed on the road is about 35mph with as much bicycle and golf cart traffic as there are cars, so you can do it hillbilly style with the buggy thrown on top or hanging out the back, whatever. The island is pretty laid back.

Looking forward to seeing you.

That all sounds good, I'm sure I'll settle into hillbilly style.

I'm going to get my plane tickets tonight and then contact the campground.

Thanks!

Spencer -

I was strapping down the kayaks, standing on the truck rail, slipped off, got my arm caught, pop.

Pain was intense for a minute or two - you know that kneed in the nads feeling?? - and then we went kayak fishing for 5 hours.

Went to my physical therapist "Not torn" - and ten days later, no better, my ortho guy.

"Torn, fix now." (Orthopedic surgeons are men of few words.)

Angus you still need to update the map on the site. It shows the rideable beach stopping at Driftwood Beach. Adventurous sailors can make it up and around the northern tip of the island to the pier and back with the right wind direction.

Yeah I could swear that I had a version of the map with that north end labeled for you and Markite. Those maps are in Corel Draw files and when I can find my Corel Draw 12 install files to fix my hosed installation, I'll update for sure! Also updating recent construction and facilities changes.
