Kite skiing vs kite skating?
Copied from oldforum:
August 22 2000 by John
I've been kite skating all summer now, having a blast doing it. But winter is approaching and it's time to plan that seasons traction
activities - kite skiing. How is this done compared to skating? Cross wind or down wind?
Tight lines

skiing is very similar to the type of skating and buggying that i do... crosswind sailing.
personally i use a short, stiff pair of children's skiis with the edges sharpened to near dangerous proportions. this helps to hold your edge on
snow and ice.
on ice i like to plane-out on the skiis for freestyle spins. on snow i tend to load-up harder and work the air tricks.
snow in the mountains will start to fall in a couple months and i have already made plans for the silvaplana winter race. i may even try a snow board
this time as it is more like kitesurfing.
have fun skating the rest of the summer. send pics and ill post them somewhere on this site.

So can you use a down hill ski on hard lake ice and hold a edge like a downhill racer?

you hold the edge more like a long pair of ice skates. only the edge grips on solid ice, but a nicely sharpened edge holds perfectly. it is possible
to sail over the entire lake on skis same as skating (or buggying) on land.
kiteskiing on packed snow feels like a cross between snow skiing and water skiing. in colorado, we enjoyed travassing the large mountain lakes and
crossing between packed snow drifts and open ice patches. the contrast of terrain in addition to the wintering mountain backdrop was quite a rush.

I have just started kite skiing and it is fast.
A friend of mine Ian was on ghost lake a couple of weekends ago and he hit 86 kmph. Not bad eh.

skis work very well on ice, as long as they are sharp.
racing skis will hold an edge the best.
check out this video clip of kiting on ice.
