Build your own Kite Skates

I know theres a ton of these type of threads and I've read through mostly all of them (if there are any more hidden to read up on let me know!)

I have a pair of 'rollerblade' rollerblades and was hoping to use those boots for a pair of kiting skates. Mainly for soccer fields.

Do you guys think this type of design would work?

http://www.skates.com/off-road-wheels-p/ql-off-rd.htm

Also those ^ are the only/best wheels I can seem to find, but they are out of stock, I emailed the supplier to see if they will be getting any more in sometime. Where else do you guys go for wheels?

If that one design wouldn't work. How do you think getting something like these frames would work with sticking them on my rollerblade boot.

And if so where to get 110mm offroad wheels?

I've checked harbor freight as I've contemplated using some of those wheels on my landboard for fun, but the smallest size I've seen is 6''.

I've read up on the doom wheels tutorial as well, that seems like a cool idea as well, I just wish it was a little bit more in depth...

Thanks guys!

Hi Omni,

Nice to see you digging into kite skating options. This is a really fun way to move around under kite power.

You might want to take a look at this thread:

http://www.powerkiteforum.com/viewthread.php?tid=32322#pid31...

I've experimented with a bunch of different skate options too. I'm selling a frame and wheel set that would work for what you are trying to do. For $150 plus shipping I've got a nice Powerslide Metropolis SUV frame and wheel set that are near new and cost me $300. These will work with your Rollerblade boots. The frames are high quality CNC'ed aluminum and the wheels are pneumatic (inflated) with good bearings sized 125x25mm.

For getting pulled around by a kite these will work well on a soccer field provided the grass isn't too long or too lush.

IMHO there are trade offs with different skate types. Basically, there are "wheels under" and "wheels of doom" designs. Wheels Under - more maneuverable but more challenging to set a hard straight tack. Wheels of Doom - less maneuverable but easier to tack. You can carve turns with wheels under and you need to step your turns with wheels of doom.
