What Pads do you Use?

I first started with my motorcycle gear (BMW motorrad pants and the fancy touring jacket). Awesomely protective but hot as hell and sort of silly looking (yes, it matters :))

Then I started wearing my hockey pads due to heat. Surprisingly effective, but they were relatively cheap pads so the knee pads kept slipping off to the side and I slide on my knees a LOT.

So for Father's day, I received as a gift the MBS pads. They look sort of cheap on their web site, but they're actually much higher quality than I had anticipated. I got the wrong size (M vs. the L I need), so I'm waiting for a return, but otherwise, I'm very pleased.

What is your protective kit?

You're supposed to use pads?!?!? Looks like I never got the memo. I don't think I ever had a situation were I would have needed them. I always land on my feet, then there is the occasional butt scud, but that's about it. I don't really get why they are needed?

Unfortunately, I know for a fact that Snake isn't joking. He either has better winds, is made of rubber, has more latent ability, or is just plain old' dumb. I know which one he would say, but I think it's the second one. 25 years ago, I got tackled (football) while I was standing straight up and the guy hit me from the front at knee level. My knees went backwards and I popped up immediately, shook it off and ran the next play. Nowadays, I'm sure I would at least break a leg or explode or something. I think I stopped being invincible at about 28.

Now I wear pads and I'm happy to. For one thing, I knee-scud way more than I butt scud now... It's faster and I have more control. My pads slide a lot faster than my kneecaps :). Moreover, I can push the limits to the edge of uncomfortability without my fun being ended by a single mistake. To each their own, I guess. I still make mistakes, but even without that, I never know what the wind will do here. 0 gusting 40 is what I found 2 weeks ago. In that crap, I can make 0 mistakes and still be hosed. Seems to me to be a no brainer...

I tend to go on my butt / hip . Rarely go over the top of the board anymore so for me , the Hillbilly A$$ pads have been the most valuable purchase.

I use hockey elbow pads ( 'cause I'm Canadian eh ! ) with my small buggy because the rub point with my wheel is a bit farther down than skate style protect.

I suspect you are correct about Snake being serious. I was told over and over that my injuries as a youth would haunt me in old age. I thought I was over them and it was done. Turns out they were right and now I'm done in ! :ticking:

Snake, PLEASE wear a helmet !

I wear a helmet, but that's it. I've had some pretty big spills while skating without even a helmet, and those were over cement. Some pro skaters where pads and some don't. Those that do do bigger tricks and those who don't do more technical things. It all comes down to what your style and preference is.

Heh. Every single one of my weak spots can be attributed to skating, boarding or climbing. Dislocated right elbow (snowboarding), fractured right wrist (snowboarding -- HUGE air, though. I'm sure all the ladies were impressed), shattered right ankle (climbing fall -- lucky to be alive), broken left collar bone (supposed to be a varial/shoveit to nosegrind, but turned into an actual nosegrind :)).

Anywhoo, don't listen to us grumpy ol' codgers, you just keep going big, Snake. Just make sure you get it on video because 23 years later nobody believes me about how much badassery I threw down in my late teens. You're a big boy and you know the stakes, so I have no beef with your decision. Just don't hate on mine. :)

Incidentally, I totally changed my opinion on how they look, too. I used to think they just kinda made you look dorky. However, I think that a good set of used, dirty, abused pads show some street cred and make you look like some sort of post-apocalyptic Road-Warrior type. Of course, if you never wreck, they just look shiny, but luckily I don't have that problem.

btw, Snake, I was out flying my 19 Venom on Sunday and was almost wishing for my 18m Guerilla a little. In super low winds, Guerilla == win. In any wind at all (e.g. 5+) Venom == win.

Proletariat- I may get pads when I start going huge, but for now The field I fly in is nice and soft so I should be fine.

And BTW, If it fly's, you are riding and jumping, 16m F-arc == win.

I've heard it said that in the realm of developmental psychology, the human brain does not develop the ability to process risk and consequences until the mid twenties... Not joking...

So, tell me why at the age of 34 I strap my self to an undersized parachute lookin thing and shoot for moving at 20-30+mph with my backside 3 inches off the ground

Anywho,... I wear a Protec helmet and a pair of knee pads I bought from Home Depot for stumping around on my knees to shoot in base board (I believe they are made by CLC). I also wear a knee brace on my "bad" knee (the one whose kneecap I dislocated a ways back)... Not a land- boarder though. So I'm ok with this set up...

I'm going to take a nap now

Knee pads, body armor, helmet. Padded harness.
Not really bothered if people like it or not, it's my body, and it's old and fragile.

I am on my Coyotes more than the ATB so stability/balance often makes me crash when a gust catches me or I run out of room at speed (I suck at rollerblading). I try to land on my side and roll so I don't break a wrist breaking the fall with my hand and my Race Face Rally forearm/elbow pads do a great job. I also wear Race Face Dig knee pads, ProTec impact shorts, cycling gloves and a helmet.

I started out with a set of elbow+knee pads they sell for rollerbladers but on my first fall the elbow pad ended up at my shoulder and the knee pad at my ankle with road rash in areas I had hoped to protect.

I like those race face pads. I might have to look into them if/when I wear out my MBS pads. Speaking of which, here is that link. They are surprisingly beefy and comfortable. I'll let you know on protective capabilities after I get the right size.

Rockgarden flak jacket, Rockgarden knee pads, Rockgarden forearm/elbow pads, Bell DOT fullface Helmet.

This accident didn't look that bad. https://vimeo.com/16678110

It's a shame I did not wear the proper gear....
Cost me 5 months out of work/kiting and an expensive shoulder surgery. Wish I would have listened to the guys now.

Now I armor up for it!
