Is flying depower static any fun

I keep hearig that flying depower static isn't any fun compared to FB and I just don't get it ?

If I HAVE to fly static I am far happier well powered on a big arc getting dragged around and jumping.

For my style or lack of I find when FB kites get big enough that I am comfortable jumping with them they end up too slow for me to get a decent redirect ?

WHY is flying FB so much more fun ?

For me it's just the turning capabilities of using a 3 or 5m kite like a stunt kite...Thing just rips me around...With that said, maybe I'm in my own little world...The Sun is out out..tunes are on....& smiling...I only weigh 150 lbs. , so in decent wind I get dragged all around and can loft myself pretty high..sometimes a little higher then I should go...no problem redirecting kite but I only fly handles.

All I can compare it to is flying a couple de-powers at WBB on bar...It was a lot different turning radius, seemed much slower but you most certainly could fly a much bigger kite in certain wind conditions which changes everything...

All just a choice and I don't care either way...I love seeing all the kites in the sky, different colors and designs and listening to everyone having a good time.

I believe anytime you can get out and fly anything it is fun.

I just kind of feel like depower has taken a bad beat as far as static fun goes ?

Everybody has their style and idea of fun. I can promise you that Scudley will be just as or more happy stunt flying his Reflexes as I do static flying my arcs in good winds.
It's ALL GOOD!

Only because it is so much fun to fly a Reflex in and out from between the lines of an Arc.

I love flying my arcs static. Long scuds and jumps are fun but when the wind is to low to do anything I fly my fb like a stunt kite. Though I'm not sure if I will be doing that much more now that I have and 18m arc.

I had a blast last summer flying the charger static in the water, but at some point I did grab a boogie board to practice retrieving a lost board;)

same thing static jumping on the beach; eventually put on the skates to cruise

static was actually more fun on that beach, the sand flats were a bit too soft

Reading this thread and thinking of your PL Escape thread, what I think would be fun and innovative would be for kite makers to, for example, bridle a 10m FB like its a trimmed depower that way FB pilots could use larger kites in larger winds and enjoy all the float and benefit of DP riders. They might be a challenge to launch and instead of a speed system they could use more of a dynamic / turbo bridle from the sport kite world to allow for floating bridle legs while trying to maximize stability. Might make for situations where FB pilots are easily overpowered but just a thought if we are looking for kite makers to continue to innovate and push boundaries.

I think its alright- certainly not better than sex but not boring either- My wind is so bad at home that if i can get out and kite. It will always mean a certain amount of static "holding on" as i get rocketed across the field on my back waiting for my arc to get to zenith and let up a little:smilegrin: but also i have gotten in the routine of practicing kite position and placement when static flying/ walking to better understand how to load the kite more efficently. Of course last time i went flying i was just standing still with kite at zenith and the next thing i know is i was 6 feet in the air from a gust..... that can be fun static flying ;)

I am not understanding this Gabe ?

I think some folks ARE better at flying static than others. I think of Scudley and Dirtslide localy . They are part of a few who can fly their kites " Rev" style and do some pretty wild things.

What I am happy to see is that I am not alone enjoying depower static as much as FB. As long as you are getting out and flying you are my kind of people !

Fun indeed!!!!!!

Lately all I can get in is a static session,... I'm so busy on the weekends that the only time I can do anything is to go fly static on my lunch break (if the wind cooperates and if I don't have school work to accomplish). Luckily there are huge ball fields on property where I work, so if I can, I do fly on lunch... Thursday I put my 6.8m Viper for about a 1/2 hr and had some huge scuds just dancing on the edge of keeping the kite in control,... it was a good experience, but wished I had pulled out the 4m instead.

I haven't had the buggy out on the field in like a month or more,... it's starting to hurt

A good for instance: the rare occasion occurred for the PAST 2 WEEKENDS where there has been wind in the 15mph range in the metro Atlanta area, and both Saturdays I've either been painting or refinishing floors in my house,... luckily the 3 yr+ home improvement project is near its end!!!!

I'm going to take a nap now
