here. Trust me. Best bang for the buck and Key Largo is WAY more relaxing than all the rest of the Keys IMO. We wanted to do the whole Key West
thing so we only stayed at the Rock Reef for a week then carried on. HATED the second spot we stayed on the Atlantic side and the spot in Key West
though nice and all was right in the middle of bustle - which is what Key West is all about.
If you want a nice quiet town, good shops and restaurants nearby and super shallow, bath tub warm water for the family Rock Reef is the best bang for
the buck. Period. And we rented the beach front cottage sparing no expense yet it was still affordable (it was supposed to be our last BIG trip before
we had to pay for our little ones' seat on the plane).
(And yeah...bathtub warm water....you WON'T need a wetsuit at all. Bring booties though.)
Don't fall for the "but Key Largo is only the first of the Keys". We did - that's why we moved on. Our entire view of the "Keys" was so skewed after
Key West that we stayed back at Rock Reef for one last night before heading home.
You're more than close enough to explore all the way down to Key West from Key Largo.
There's a GREAT kid's playground in Marathon - our daughter loved it.
