Hey Desert Buggy'rs,
If you're looking for a way to rapidly increase your buggy skills, this fall event at Elmer's might be just right.
Nice weather by the end of September.
Usually pretty nice winds too.
You can meet the folks you've been reading about.
Put faces to the names (careful - they might not look exactly as they "sound")
Meet many of the people behind the stories.
Heck... You might find yourself in a story.
Miki and Tsune Baba, buggiers from Tokyo are planning to be here.
I think Miki is bringing here folks out to see what crazy stuff their daughter is doing out in the middle of desert America.
We should wear costumes... And act casual.
It is pretty casual.
Many buggiers from all over the southwestern U.S. have been making this event a must-do for over 10 years now.
Less than 2 hours by car from LAX.
Low-key, with no sponsors and no advertising, The Fall Thang is not put on to entertain an audience but to help nurture a sense of family and
community among the riders.
Seems to be working too.
Nothing is provided.
You are responsible for everything you'll need to survive a weekend in a harsh, desert dry lake environment.
We typically have plenty of camo shade for everyone to be comfortable.
Bring plenty of liquids (besides beer - a dehydrator)
There are nice toilets about a mile from our camp at Walt's Cove.
Motels and restaurants are about 8-15 miles away, depending on how picky you might be.
It's usually not as bad as we make it sound, but it is remote and harsh so one always comes prepared. Unexpected severe weather changes are not that
unusual, so we try to always pay attention.
As far as gear goes... If you're just starting into buggying and don't have the stuff yet, bring your power.
Show some skills with your kites and a buggy can be found to give you a go.
It's the ones just wanting a ride that make it difficult.
Seems every year someone shows up having heard of the event, never flown a kite before, wanting to get out of their car and onto a buggy.
The playa surface isn't the best place to learn to fly a steerable kite on.
Getting the basics down usually includes putting the kite into the ground a hundred times or so.
Dragging lightweight fabric across a rough surface...
Doesn't bother me nearly as much if it's their kite taking the beating.
Provides the new flyer with a good motivation if it's their own kite too.
If a person has bothered to learn kites, gone so far as to buy one and become comfortable with it, that's a good indicator that the buggy is now
appropriate.

Hey there Don. Last year I stayed in Adelanto, which is about 20 minutes from the lake, with a couple other buggiers. There is a Motel 6 there.
Victorville is another 15 minutes away from Adelanto, and has more to offer. Or you can do the tent thing on the lake.
It's a lot of fun out there, and I learned a lot (like watching out for dust devils sneaking up on your 6).

No registration.
No fee.
No scheduled races.
No schedule... beyond the dates - Sept. 16-17, 2006.
It's not about trying to entertain you (or anyone else, for that matter).
It's about participating.
You're invited to come and be a part of this.
We provide venue, the participants provide content.
Camping in our little Elmer's Buggytown is a highlight for desert car-campers.
Very relaxed atmosphere with friends and newbies alike.
Day-trippers (motel-dwelling riders) are a welcome source of fresh ice in the morning.
Either way, I can't imagine a finer weekend camping trip.
If the winds blow, we might even do a bit-o-buggying.

Yes.
There is usually wind at Elmer's in the fall.
Bring everything.
Earl (our local wind gawd) knows what we want.
He does not, however, care.
He has an uncanny knack of bringing the wind for the one kite you left at home.
Most of us have U-Haul trucks packed with ALL our kite and buggy gear.
We hire someone to drive it to the lakebed.
Then we hire someone to buggy for us.
Only then can you act casual before Earl.

Much news at the Dooley residence these days... the Official Curmudgeon is SINGLE again! Actually, they (wife, daughter plus attached boyfriend, 2
cats, rabbit, 2 rats, 2 fish, and hamster) move out Sep. 1, but by Fall Thang, I should be a much more relaxed fellow. If, that is, you don't park
too flippin' close! Remember, my laundress quit, so you camp downwind at your own risk!
Besides this, I've taken up African drumming as a pastime for no-wind days, and I'm bringing two African Djembe drums to Fall Thang. Anybody else got
a drum? A cowbell? Two resonant sticks to bang together? A tambourine? Flute? Bagpipes?
Tribal Drumming, for those who aren't a little familiar, is extremely therapeutic, relaxing, and just plain fun. Anyone that can keep a beat can
drum... banging on your desk, tapping your foot, one leg that just won't stop jumping up and down... I've seen these all over Buggy Town, especially
when the wind's down. Turn that energy into rockin' sound, let the whole damn lakebed know where the REAL Tribe is at! C'mon, that old Conga drum in
the garage isn't THAT big to bring along... pack it!
Anyway, I'll most likely be in on Thursday afternoon, as usual, so those who don't know Walt's Cove, look for the white VW Eurovan with an Earth Flag
and red/white/black Hypno-Twister flying nearby. Park 50 yards away and yell, "Howdy!". <evil grin>

Venturing Out Into the Mojave...
By all means download the directions from Dan's website: www.windwizard.com
But Do NOT think that'll be enough.
You might consider a good map of the area, showing the specific places you're going. I like the DeLorme Gazetteer, available at most good bookstores.
Water, of course, is very important.
So is shade.
Gloves,
a hat that won't blow off your head,
sunscreen,
boots with heels (if you're riding),
If you're camping, you want to be either up off the ground or in a tent with bathtub construction (critters come out at night - too bleeping hot
during the day).
Enter the lake bed during sunlight hours.
Finding the camp at night, especially the first time, can be very challenging.
From the entry road, it's nearly 4 miles up the lakebed.
On the right, across from the landsailers in Sailors Cove, you'll spot a few vehicles.
Coming closer you'll begin to notice there are flags and windsocks around the camp. If you don't see flags and windsocks, it is possibly not the right
camp.
If the breeze is up, you might notice kites moving over the lakebed.
You have to be very close to notice the buggies.
No winds? Then you'll see buggies scattered around the camp.
Most folks out on the playa are pretty friendly.
You may ask for directions, but they probably won't know us.
Many groups bring their moter-stuff in toy haulers and RV's.
Our camp has only a couple trailers or RV's.
Most of us use our cars and vans.
Another advantage of playing in a light-weight sport.
Our award-winning curmugeon is beginning to sound almost happy, but don't let that fret you none.
He can often sound nice and benign on the e-forums, or when he wants something, but I guarantee he'll be his old crusty self when we begin to invade
"his playa".
Remember to stay 50' away.
And probably best if you not be directly down-wind.
His "laundress" quit.
Bring small kites.
Bearings require tons less energy to start rolling and keep rolling.
No sinking.
More power and bigger kites will just stick you in camp most of the time.
At least, that's been the typical fall winds.
From 10 mph to 30+ mph.

crying everytime that wind seems to blow just right.....
