JIBE DATES 2013: MAY 8-11

JIBE is of course the Jekyll Island Buggy Expo, on Jekyll Island, Georgia.

Some have asked for dates now because they need to book vacation rental properties (see below*) or put in for time off from work.

Looking at the tide tables, it looks like Wednesday May 8 through Saturday May 11. Low tide is 2:27 pm Wednesday and 4:26 on Saturday- perfect.

EDIT: Web site updated for 2013 with new dates.

The portion of the JIBE web page with registration info can be found here.

To go direct to purchase registration on my secure server, click here.

Keep in mind that this year, the only way to get a T-shirt is to pre-register. If you register on site, you will pay less and not get a shirt. I might have a couple of extras for sale but there is no guarantee. (tired of losing my shirt on shirts)

Yes I know that Mothers Day is on Sunday the 12th, but this has happened before without too much trouble. Some have just had to leave a bit early on Saturday. Perfect solution: bring your mom! (Several have, and remember that there is much to do in the Golden Isles Region besides kiting)

I will also need to clear this with the Jekyll Island Authority [EDIT: Done], but this should not be a problem as it will likely be the weekend before the Triathalon, giving us even more latitude.

* Vacation rental properties are a popular and attractive alternative to hotels if you are traveling with a small group or in some cases, pets. Cooking for yourself on a grill or in a kitchen as opposed to eating out every night makes it even more affordable.

The Jekyll Island Buggy Expo is a loosely organized rally and fun-fly for kite buggies, but land boards and land sailors are welcome. Jekyll Island is an unusual venue and one of the finest kite buggy sites on the east coast. Jekyll Island is a state park with many attractions and amenities. Beaches are not crowded and are over a football field wide at low tide with hard-pack sand nearly up to the dune line. The length of beach open to buggying is about 4 miles.

Jekyll Island is in the Golden Isles Region of southeast Georgia, about half way between Savannah and Jacksonville, FL. It is 15 minutes from I-95 and an hour from Jacksonville International Airport (JAX). The region offers much to do for non-kiting family members, so many JIBE attendees make the event a family vacation destination. There are a variety of affordable hotel options as well as a very nice campground on Jekyll Island.

Feel free to post questions or e-mail me. (angus "at" coastalwindsports.com )

Excellent. It's on the calendar.

I'm glad it's not the triathlon weekend. This'll cut down on the competition for resources of all kinds.

I fly: Charger II 6.5m * Charger II 8m * Charger II 10m * Scorpion 10 (for sale) * Phantom II 12m * F-Arc 1200 * Venom 13m

I ride: Peter Lynn XR+ on Midis * Flexifoil Midi/Barrow * Peter Lynn Comp on Barrows * Peter Lynn XR+ (needs a fork)

I build: Custom bars for buggy pilots

I write about kite stuff: at http://philipbchase.com

Well we don't know that for sure yet as the JIA has not yet set the date for the Triathalon. It's just that they have so far always done it the weekend prior to Memorial day weekend and we are now a week ahead of that.

But in any event the farther we can get from Memorial Day, the better.

The typical NOAA forecast for Jekyll island this time of year is 10-15 kts with some component of east built in. It will often start out in the day with much less, but in the afternoon when the seabreeze kicks in around 2 pm or so, it will build to something higher. This gives us on-shore winds with beam reaches.

20 mph + with smoking sand is frequent but not as constant. That's when the water riders get excited and we had some great winds this year for sure. This year we had 20 mph from the NE due to frontal conditions and early tropical storm activity. This was great for seasoned riders but awkward for some novices.

Over the 4-day spread there is usually something for everybody.

Dagon, if there is anything I can do to help with local info, let me me know. There is much to do here for the entire family.

Scott, looking at dates, work, etc. right now it actually looks like driving is the cheaper option compared to flying and shipping gear. Shipping a Majestic is screwy expensive!
