Noob's Wind Speed Concerns
Hello all! Just now getting into all of this! I thought kite surfing would be awesome, then I found out you can get land boards and I think I'm
hooked! My only concern is.... my location!
I live in Georgia and, in my town, the average wind speeds are about 7-10 miles an hour. I don't mind taking it slow at first and every now and then
when the wind speeds kick up trying out faster speeds and jumping and such. Also, I'm not too far from the coast so I might could utilize the beach,
just gotta check into rules and such of nearby beaches on free weekends and such. Again, all new to this so I'm still trying to figure all the
specifics out! How much the wind matters compared to kite specs and geography and such...
Anyways, all help is appreciated! I guess I'm just trying to figure out if this is even possible for me?? I'm probably relocating in 2 years or so and
out of the locations I have in mind, the wind there would a bit stronger. I'd like to go ahead and start learning now though.

Buy a $15 wind meter from eBay, measure the wind then launch your kite ... you'll get a feel for what you like and what you don't real quick.
Yeah... I got a kite. Or two...

If you are not far from the coast, Jekyll Island is PRIMO!! We were just there last ween and for boarding, you can't go wrong at low tide! I tried
land boarding last week there and in 12-15 mph winds I was doing pretty well on a 15m Phantom II. The good thing there is the weather station is
located right on kite beach so all you need is Internet on your phone to see wind speed. Angus Campbell from Coastal Wind Sports is local there so he
may have a kite or 2 you can try to get the feel for it. Welcome to the addiction!!!

Wind speed does not matter. If you had fun, learned something, and came home safe, it was an epic session.

I'm about two and a half hours from Jekyll. Could be a great weekend getaway! Ever tried out Tybee? Its a bit closer for me, but I know they are weird
about dogs, so I don't know how they are about kites. Speaking of dogs, is Jekyll dog-friendly, do you know? My dog LOVES the water, so heading out
that far would be a double bonus if I could bring him too!!
Thanks! I can already feel the soon-to-be addiction burning holes in my pockets!

Burn your wallet now! Not sure about Tybee but Jekyll is very dog friendly! We
had a few dogs out on the beach during the event last week. Absolutely worth the drive! I am about 7-8 hours from JI so I only get to go once a year
but if I were a couple hours away, I'd be there at least once a month!

Got my kite yesterday (PL Viper S 2.6) and took it out today. Somehow I avoided "the new kite curse" cause today was uncharacteristically windy!! Wind
was pretty stable at about 8 mph with a few 12-15 gusts this morning that were trying to get me. Pretty decent for a first experience I guess.
...... I'm hooked
The best part is about a 2 minute walk behind my house, there is an old football field where all the buildings have been taken down and is "in the
process" of being converted to a small park (as it has been for the past 3 years!!) so I just walked down and set up there for about an hour this
morning! Had a family gathering I had to go to today, which cut my time short. Went to a bigger field not too long ago with my younger cousin for a
good couple hours and now he is begging my aunt to get him a kite too, hahaha. I must say, flying my two-line smaller trick kite has NOTHING on this
thing. Similar understanding of wind, but the four-line thing is gonna take some getting used to.
Can't wait to get more practice in and get a board. Gotta wait until I get my old apartment's security deposit back. I think I see how this whole
"loose change" thing is gonna go from now on
Off to plan out a more conservative budget!
