Recommend a good adhesive

So a while ago I bought the NSI deck pad that comes in 12 different pieces (thought it would allow for more customization) so I could put straps on my surfboard. First time out, the front strap comes off...put some epoxy on it and then go out another time and the back strap comes off.

This unfortunately has continued for quite some time (front, back, front, back, etc). In total I think I tried two different epoxies and the last time I used Gorilla glue. Well just last Saturday, the rear gorilla glue strap comes off.

Can anyone recommend an adhesive? I'm almost to the point of throwing the whole set up away and then buying the 2 piece deck pad which I should have done in the first place.

Pretty sure NSI recommends 3M Super 77 adhesive, but I can confim tomorrow, if you want.

Some other alternatives are discussed here.

Are you talking about the NSI stick-on footstrap deck pads? Didn't those come with a 3M VHB type of adhesive for the footstraps? If you can find some of that for the footstraps, with the proper prep it makes a pretty permanent bond. I couldn't source small quanties (just large expensive rolls) when I tried to find it a while back. For the pads a good quality outdoor contact cement will do the trick. Unfortunately, the epoxy / gorrilla glue treatment may have buggered the lot though???

Yep...came with adhesive but both footstrap deck pads popped off...because it came in so many pieces the actual deck pad on the footstraps is pretty small. With all the reside from the epoxy and gorilla glue, it will be interesting to see if some of these other adhesives will work...

3M's DP100, awesome stuff....use it for resucring parts off of airliner seats....cures fast, holds good, and can take the abuse of 100's of passengers . Will it work on what you are doing? Might be worth a shot, I have seen it at Ace in the past.

Hey lunch,
I think your problem is on the side of the board. I think you need to rough the surface of the board to get adhesion. I'd just sand it with 120 grit paper and then clean the dust really well.
I've put straps on a bunch of surfboards using footstrap inserts. It's super easy. Just use a drill bit that is a hole saw. Just don't go through the back side, and don't place a back foot strap right onto of a fin plug. You may have to cut the back strap plugs down a bit using a hack saw to fit the tail thickness. Then just set the plugs in using resin with filler added. Then I make my own foot pads from shop foam pads that you stand on. That's when I roughen the surface of the board and use contact cement.
Before I roughened the board, the pads would alway peel up. Now I cant get them off if I try.
Here's link to the plugs

Hope this helps

Sorry if you've already handled this but I couldn't help but chime in here

You certainly would not want to use 5200 unless you never want to take them back off, 3M super 77 works fine and as pointed out to me by a reputable surfboard repair guy it is compatible with the original traction pad material/adhesive if you're re-appplying.

Cool..thanks guys for all the info

So I went down to our local hardware store the other day and picked up some sandpaper, 3M Super 77, Marine Goop and some stuff that was recommended by the guy down there, 'Professional Welder'.

Like Flyfish recommended, I sanded down the area on the board first (didn't do this before...dooh!) and then sanded off all (well not all, but most) of the gorilla glue and epoxy reside that was left on the deckpad).

I decided to try the Professional Welder stuff first (the guy also gave me a free tube) and applied on both the board and deckpad. Wanted about 5 minutes and stuff them together.

Hopefully I'll be able to try it this weekend.

If that doesn't work, I'm going to try what Flyfish suggested (great idea -Thanks!).

...or order some new 2 piece NSI deck pads and use the 3M Super 77.
