"Kite Skiing" is dead, long live "Snow Kiting"?
So is it official? Can we say definitively that the term "Kite skiing" is dead? It seems that lately there's been a lot more reference to riding
snow as "Snow Kiting".
Much more of an umbrella term to cover the snow aspect of kite sport it and a little clearer to the non-kiting population in my opinion.
I never hear it refered to "Kite Snowboarding" which rolls off the tongue like a cinder block. And I rarely hear it called "Kite Skiing" which is
somewhat easier to say but not at all accurate since at least 50% of the snow riding population is riding single plank.
Just another evolutionary step in the development of the sport? Maybe we should call it "Snowboard Kite Skiing"?! :wee:
But that leaves the snowbladers and ice skaters out.
Just throwing that out there.

Jan, our local kite guru, and initial organizer of the Tug Hill fest, almost always refers to it as kite skiing, and has gotten the local Trails
Coordinator (County Recreation Dept) calling it kite skiing, so he has hats printed "Tug Hill Kite Skiing", which always brings protests from us
'planS-P-A-M-L-I-N-K- riders.

i have stopped trying to sew the words to gether ...ended up with this
"what are you doing?" ......"kiting"
it covers it.
and so noted . hence "kite skiing " will be referenced under archaic terms rather than listed with windsurfing as being, over.

i always refer to SNOW KITING - that way its not specific to ski or snowboard
Kitebuggy - buggies
Flyboarding / Land Kiteboarding / Ground Kiteboarding / ATB Kiting - mountain boards, blades, coyotes, etc etc
Kitesurfing / Kiteboarding - twintip, wave

Ha! So you all see my point.
Bobbalooie the Tugg hill situation you described is awesome. As its organized by someone who has been riding snow from back in the day I can totally
see why they refer to it as "Kite Skiing" My uneducated guess is that Jan is a twin plank rider (Skier) and when he started riding snow there weren't
any snowboarders in it yet there. Maybe next year the graphic on the Tugg Hill stuff will be changed to "Snowkiting" to be more inclusive of our
snowboarding breatheren?
I definately relate to what you're saying Phree. Many a time it's been easier to just say "kiting". When we go out we often refer to it as "flying"
which is probably not the best term unless you ride with us regularly. Funny, i'm not sure how that developed. Probably from being isloated here when
we started kiting. We originally refered to it as "Flying kites" because we were static flying. Then we just shortened it. I didn't start calling
it kiting until we started meeting other kiters.
Buggiers. I think you'd still be called buggiers regardless of what you run on the buggy. Though if you are into dune buggies that could be mildly
cornfusin'. "Ice Buggier" has a sort of badass ring to it I think. :tumble:
Phree's right tho. "Kite Skiing" is definately a done term.

I, of course, always get funny looks when I mention kiting.
They're always checking their wallets when they leave, just in case.

"What are you doing?"
"Kiting"
"I don't see any checks."
"Sir, we're in the middle of a field, I've got a huge freaking kite in the air, and your first thought was related to 'floating a check aka kiting a
check?' Forest for the trees, my good man."
Tide? What's a tide? Man, it's 1000 miles to any ocean.

"What are you doing?" "I'm baking a cake what does it bloody look like I'm doing?" actually that's my standard answer to anything, including kids (at work) asking me the dumb question when I'm reading a book,
using the computer etc etc
Kiteboarding is my own cover-all term ... anything with 'surfing' in it get the check-in nazi's all excited to charge me extra for my board.
Kite skiing ... haven't heard that for YEARS. Anyone remember "up-skiing"?
Yeah... I got a kite. Or two...

"Kiteskiskatebuggyboardblading"
There, you all happy now? Okay maybe its too long. We can juts call it "KSSBB" how's that.
"Do you KSSBB?" "Why, yes I do KSSBB!"
"What are you doing?" "Can't you see? I'm KSSBBing!"
Maybe not. The full name would never fit on a shirt or a hat unless you put it into some unlegibly small font size. And just the initials lacks
pazzaz, does'nt roll off the tongue (in enlglish anyway) and kinda looks retarded.
Guess I'll just stick to "Snow Kiting". Say "Kite Skiing" to some kid and they say "oh yeah, my grand daddy did that".
Screw it, I'm bringin back up-skiing. Headed to the army/navy store now to pick out a chute. Kami, you want to get in on this action?

The Chinese are selling old chutes , go to " cheaperthandirt.com" of course the cords have been cut to protect the innocent. Got 2 different types in
the garage just waiting for a good idea. "I'm go'n flying" has a nice satisfying ring to it.

Yep, KiteSki was Cory Roessler and his dad.
Kami, thanks for the UpSki reference. I had forgotten about that one. It's fun to look back and see the strange paths this sport went down to get
where it is today.
What is it we are doing to day that will look goofy 10 years from now? Non-depower kites. Non-automatic safety systems? Non-sprung buggies?
