*Video* Tears Of The Dragon

After 10+ months in the making... the video is finished.

Tears Of The Dragon <---Link

Corey and I started this project last year and never got a chance to take it out for a true shakedown run. The boat is a 17' Hobie cat that was a gift from a good friend. It came with a bent mast and no sails, oh well it’s free. Right? With a lot of effort we restored the hulls and replaced the tramp. You will be seeing footage from two different cameras, one being the ContourHD (for most of the video) and the second camera of course the GoProHD. Be sure to watch some of the bloopers at the end and feel free to download this if you care. You must be signed in and a member of Vimeo to do so.

I have some ideas on how to cure the bar roll with a couple of pulleys clipped into the chicken loop so I can use the de-power, other than that I think it'll rock. Comments and Criticism always welcome

very nice video and camera work.

do you run the dagger boards?

cat sailing dynamics " in a tow" is a hand full . pilot position ,rudder, hiking out, kite control. truly alot going on!

def a two man go

a pilot sitting on the forward cross bar actually working the kite may produce greater kite effect (perhaps back a few feet). hiking out and getting the weather side hull up? hard to see it happening.

seems a bit precarious with the bar extension.

be careful, least bit of luff and you'll want the be able to handle the main on the kite.

very cool presentation!

Very clever and novel arrangement. Incorporating de-power would be awesome. Let us know how the mods go!

Thanks guys! Dually noted on being able to grab the main Phree, I've been thinking of a chair setup so I could sit in the middle. Sitting out on the wings is a bit much for me. Now if I could incorporate some pulleys and cables I'd have steering down as well. My big oversized kite Kat.

Yes to the dagger boards!

foot controls for the rudders

i assume a jibe gets you around but the kite may be starved in the process .

an upwind tack would be do able but speed and lift may make things hard to control .

speed control will be the biggest hurdle , def have to have snappy rudder action to keep the kite happy. knowing the "brakes " on a cat will help , kinda like a choking turn that slows the boat a little. always take a paddle!

watch your fingers! have fun!

That's the idea with the foot pedals Phree and if you look the paddles can be seen strapped to the beam. So far we will have to work on the jibe a bit to smooth out the transaction. Send me some wind!

WOW! Awesome job men. What a great father/son project. Sure is looking pretty on her "Maiden" voyage. Great choice of soundtrack tunes too! Bruce has still got it after all these years.
Can't wait to see how she sails once you figure a way to sheet in/out. Hope to see her in action at WW this fall :wink2:
