you should be running a track perpindicular to the wind... sounds like you are trying to go straight downwind to me

^^^^^^^ confirm above.

A big misunderstanding about kiting is that we don't ride with the wind but instead operate exactly like sailboats. We tack upwind, and cut downwind. Moving directly downwind takes some extra maneuvering. Try riding perpendicular to the wind like dylan said and see how that works. You can get more speed that way too. (15 knot wind can = 20-30kt groundspeed vs 15 knot downwind cannot make more than 5-10 knot downwind).

If you think about it to it makes sense. if you are going directly downwind at 10 mph and the windspeed is 20mph, you will only have 10 mph of wind going over the kite because you've cancelled 10mph by moving WITH the wind.

Therefore the fastest speeds are achieved moving at roughly perpendicular to the wind...

Science for the day :)

Sometimes pointing the board slightly downwind allows you to accelerate more quickly than starting out at 90 degrees to the wind and it seems that with a little speed it is easier to start cutting up wind to achieve that perpendicular line. For me I feel it takes some of the risk out of getting completely yanked on my arse when I put 'er into the power zone from a dead stop.

^^^ above also confirmed lol. Yea I do the same. On the landboard and snowboard I do a little downwind cut for a second or two when i first bring the kite from zenith through the window. Helps soften the sudden lift as well as gives some time to get your balance back a little. Then after that first initial pull I hike it back to perpendicular and put more bodyweight in the harness... Good call on Thanson

Check out Bernoulli principal that will explain it.

The principle also makes it possible for sail-powered craft to travel faster than the wind that propels them (if friction can be sufficiently reduced). If the wind passing in front of the sail is fast enough to experience a significant reduction in pressure, the sail is pulled forward, in addition to being pushed from behind. Although boats in water must contend with the friction of the water along the hull, ice sailing and land sailing vehicles can travel faster than the wind.

First WELCOME to the best forum on the net.:tumble:

HERE is a good tutorial explaining it much better than I could. It is written for buggys but applies just the same to ATB. Have a good look at FIG. 9.

Wish list; Yakuza, Vapor, Nitro Evo, Combat, Prodigy, (you get the idea), Phantom, Rev B. I'm broke so don't tempt me.
My experience is limeted to one C-kite, some foils, an ATB and a buggy. Anything else I'm just being an internet ninja, I will try to source any thing I say however.

I think you my be diving the kite too hard on the 1st attempt ? You just want to do a small quick dip pf the kite to get some momentum at 1st. Take that motion , dive the kite harder the second time. On the second pump you may or may not have the right speed + power combo built up and may have to repeat by sending it back up. Don't let the kite get low and upwind until you have the speed + power to park and ride.

Lean back against the power and transfer it it speed.

Keep Trying , it will click.
