I'm in albany, not much around here until the lakes freeze but sacandaga, round, and Saratoga lakes should be good once the water stiffens up a little bit.

MA gang memeber checking in. Nov / Dec is a bit early for the snow scene out here. There's a pond in my backyard and only 1 time in the past 11 years has it been frozen by January 1st. Depending upon the winter it is usually late January to early Feb before the MA lakes are frozen. Large fields will be your best bet for snow or head further north if you will be leaving by January.

We had heavy frosts early this week, but a warmfront has moved in and temps are up in the 50's now. We usually start getting snow by the end of Oct. up here, but it might be into Nov. before it is good for riding.. I will continue to update conditions in the Tug Hill region, cuz I can hardly wait for snow, and am looking forward to seeing more kites on the hill this winter!

Bob ive been watching weather in your area. If you get a decent snow 6+ or enuff to be ridable close to a weekend ill head up there. Im dying to get some snowkiting in. I was going to head out to central pa last weekend but the snow reports were to spotty. Getting good snow cover, good wind, and finding a nice sized field wasnt happening.

Wm, thanks for those links! I plan to take some pics and maybe a little video that I will add to your site! Conditions are looking good, if a little cool. Forecast is for Ptly Cldy, wind W-WSW at 10 - 20 , temp. maxing out at 50 deg. F. I hope I'm not the only kiter there, but it will not be the best conditions for walkers, so we'll probably have the beach to ourselves! I agree with the snow part! tho most here would say I must be crazy!

WILDWOOD NORTH ???

Well actually, Southwick Beach was known as the Atlantic City of the north before the great depression. It is a rather unique area along Lake Ontario in that there is a rather wide packed sand beach, and before the depression had it's own boardwalk with amusements and rides. It also has the best buggying I have experienced in the north country! I had a clear (mostly, there are a few trees to negotiate around) 1.5 mile run up and down the beach, with only a few walkers to contend with. I could have gone further in either direction, but to the north is private beach, and to the south the beach narrows up some, and I might have made it past that point, but I might also have landed my kite in a tree, and I didn't want to go there. Here's a short, raw vid of me going back and forth on the beach with the 1.4m Beamer. http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=vids.individual...

BTW, this location is wind dependent only, no tides to worry about! Dead West is best, but any west is workable.

So anyway, IMHO, this spot is definitely worth a 3-4 hour drive to buggy. I'm trying to get some people together for Sun. 11/1. Wind is predicted from the west at 15-20kts. and only 40% chance for rain at last check. I'm using NOAA info for Southwick Beach, NY and also the info provided on william_rx7's site LocalKitespots.com.(which I think is great btw). Gimme a shout if you think you can make it!

Sounds like a hoot Bob. I'm in Boston this weekend otherwise I would definitely consider the trip. Depending on the forecast for the following weekend, I may be able to make the drive out then, schedule permitting, probably on that sunday. Guess it all depends on the wind and weather.

Bigben

I and several others fly at Nahant often. It is a great beach for traction kiting, have you ever been? If not you should give it a try when your in town and have the time. And if you need buggy or kites, many of us have extras and are willing to share.

bigben, I'll probably be as Southwick Sunday 11/1, and every weekend day with west winds until the snow flies! I've added you to my list of nykiters, and will e-mail all with weekly updates! also weather and conditions once the snow starts piling up!

danny - I've never been to Nahant but I've heard good things. I'd love to try it out sometime but every time I'm over in that neck of the woods my schedule is always pretty full, perhaps someday the stars will align.

Bob, I got your email, and while I can't partake this weekend, keep them coming. I really want to get out there at some point, I'm actually thinking maybe next weekend I may have Sunday free...not sure yet, still shuffling things, but I'd love to get out there and check out Southwick. Once we get into the winter months my schedule free's up a lot, so I'm sure I'll get out there for some snow action if I can't make it out before that.

I did have a good time at the holloween party(ies), it was a great night to be outside - 70 degrees on 10/31 in the northeast - crazy. Wind was nutty though, I'm almost glad I didn't have my kites up, probably would have hurt myself.

Bob - how was southwick today???

Heading back to Southwick today, wind isn't supposed to be all that (WSW- 5-10), but the sun is out, and it should be a good day anyway. Another pic, looking out over the lake (W).
