Anybody have any good places to go around NY state? I live in Rochester and I don't think there is a large grassy area (that doesn't belong to someone) within 30 miles. I've been going to a smaller park, but its not fit for landboarding.

Hey rip2tide2, Welcome to the forum. website looks cool. I have been going to my local fairgrounds.(Lewis County) Also school soccer fields on weekends. If you can find a farmer with pasture/hayfield, and hook him into the sport, they usually have large open fields and might let you use them. ( they usually don't have time for 'flyin a kite', but once they realise you aren't going to sue if you get hurt on their property, will sometimes let you use it.) Carrying a prepared "liability release form" sometimes helps. Are there any parks along the lake near you? Sometimes the best wind will be found along the lakeshore. If you have a state park nearby, sometimes open areas like grassy fields or overflow parking areas can be used for buggy/boarding. This is best during off peak season, when not too many people are around. I hope this is helpful, but sadly inland kiters have to take what we can get.(edit) There looks to be some 'beach' area on either side of the inlet from L.Ontario to Irondequoit Bay(using Yahoo maps, sattelite/hybrid option) Have you checked these out? They look big enough to be kitable, if access is not a problem. Bob

Hey bobalooie57, thanks for the compliment. :D I hadn't thought of the fairgrounds ->that might not be a bad idea. Yea, I was thinking soccer fields too. Rochester has a big complex with like 12 soccer fields or something. I'm hoping I can convince them to let me in. We also have Irondequoit Bay - which is right off of Lake Ontario which would be great for any kiteboarders. Unfortunately, I don't have a kite for the water...yet. I guess I'm just going to have to pull up my skirt and ask some farmers if they wouldn't mind. Liability release form is a good touch*

I think you're the first person I've seen with safety gear listed in their signature. Props to you. I've managed to collect a few "safety items" myself - all of these were purchased by my mother....

I think your "mood" says it all~

Rip:

Take a look just Northwest of the intersection Gillett Road and Nichols Street in Spencerport. I don't know who owns it, but.... oh my.

After that (as Ben said), start making friiends with the farmers in the Spencerport/Ogden Center corridor. Someone has got to have some fields in seasonal rotation.

Basically, get away from the concrete of downtown Rochester... lots of two lane blacktop west of you and most of it is flanked by green.

All the best,
Sam

Hey Sam - cruised out to Nichols and Gillett Rd over the weekend. There is some nice wide open space... but its all been plowed up. I'll have to look around some more.

Check out this spot in Buffalo. I drove by once, and it looked pretty good, and worth a short drive from Rochester.

Some one posted on the Ontario map, but it's in the US, so you don't even need your passport to get back home.

Reservoir is good place to buggy, I have flown here the past few Yrs during the Niagra Falls International Kite Fest. There is a big hill next to lake that is fun to scream down in the right winds.........aj
