By all means go check it out and let everybody know if it works.

I lived on the Monterey Peninsula (Pacific Grove) for 15 years.
Most of the Central Cal beaches are very narrow and soft, especially where the beaches are steep.
The only good sand seemed to be at winter afternoon low tides.
It often exposed runs that were not available at other times.

Broad, flat beaches are there in my dreams...

Then there is the wind...
Coming at 45 degrees to the beach can make life perilous.
Directly on-shore is a wondrous thing.

I just checked the park website and found the park regs., you won't like it skateboards or inline skates or similar devices are not allowed and bikes are only to be ridden only on designated bike paths.... I think you will find these folks less than receptive of your buggy on their beach .... "outlaw kiter"

I spoke with someone who goes to point reyes alot, she said there is a private beach that you pay $5 for access and there are very few rules, she said she saw a lot of kite surfers out there. I am going to look into this but if anyone knows please fill us in.

do you know the name of the beach ? I will be at point reyes this weekend and I can give it a look and report back.

dont know the name, I was thinking of taking the family to point reyes as well, what days will you be there. Make sure to let us know what the tides are like at low tide.

I will be there friday - monday . I'm not going to take the buggy since there seems to be a chance of it not going over well with the rangers. I figured i would use this trip to feel them out and ask around. I don't want to be the guy to ruin it for everyone else. So I figure play it safe and do some smoosin with the rangers.
You can guarantee I will be watching the tides and different locations for different wind conditions.
Also sorry about the handles today. I just got to the field when you showed up and my mind was on riding not the handles.

I would be interested in hearing your Point Reyes info as well. The last couple of times I have been down there the access to the beach has been restricted to the tour bus due to the whales migrating. I wish I could remember the months the migration goes on...I forget. We'll probably be at Salmon Creek (north of Bodega on the 1) doing some scudding on Sunday.

Happy three day weekend guys/gals. If the wind holds up we should have some good flying. Providing every place is not over run with people...

heres what I found out today. 3 beaches open to kites Drakes beach, Limatour beach , Point reyes beach from north beach to south beach. The plover has the rest of the beaches. The buggies are a grey subject. There is no rules that say no or yes. A buggy will be subject to the ranger on the scene. I talked to a ranger and the owner of a local kite shop. the beach info. was the same from both. The shop owner said its not really worth it here as the beaches are steep and even at low tide there is only a few feet of hard pack to buggy on. He thought the buggies would be fine as long as you behaved yourself. he said its better not to ask about buggies, because if you make the rangers have to make a decision they will most likely say no. Just go for it and be respectful and you should be fine was what he had to say.
I didn't make it to the beaches today because of rain, so i will have to report on that later.

I went to point reyes today with the family. the beaches on the western side are the only ones that will get that nice NW wind that is so popular from the wind gods here on in the pacific nw. As for ranger attitude acording to the ranger I spoke to no vehicles are allowed on the beaches, I said "but it is wind powered" he said " does it have wheels?". I hope you are getting the picture here. But regardles the western coast, however nice it may be angled to ge the wind, is total crap for a buggy. The coastline is very steep and there is very little room to buggy on, even if you did buggy in that little space you would need bigfoots because the sand is so soft and large grain that your tires sink in even to the wet stuff. not to mention all the scare talk about "sneaker waves" and undertoe that threaten to pull you out to sea. I thought this was all talk for stupid people but when I went to the beach I realized that is an angry sea there, I did not let my kids anywhere near that water not even to get their feet wet. It really did look like the waves would grab you and pull you out.
so bottom line is it is a beatufull place to go but not good for any kite sports. The drive there was also only worth doing every once in a while. So go there and see all the cool stuff, there is a very nice lighthouse with a 150 yr old fresnel lens, a very cool spot where the 1906 quake moved a fence 16 feet apart, etc. but dont bother going there to buggy

Thanks for the heads up and the footwork - well at least we've got ocean beach - I'm really hoping that the weather shifts a bit more - seems like a twenty degree temperature difference between Sacramento and SF (Sac:80 and SF:60) works really well to call the western winds onto the beach - I'll be out of town for it but next weekend looks pretty close to those conditions.

If you go just a bit further north check out Dillon Beach. Go to the far south end on Bay Drive to the campground and then walk out onto the beach there. I had some awesome buggying there one evening in a 30mph wind that was completely mad.

Bodega Bay is also sort of ok, but the beach curves round in a crescent, so you'll find a short section that will work for the wind direction, but if you go beyond that the beach isn't wide enough to get some zigzagging in to get abck to where you came from. The sand at the waters edge is hard but the rest of the beach is pretty soft. The beach on the inside bay side is also ok, but not very wide - if the wind is just right you can bomb up and down the beach while the kite surfers are out in the bay.
