flexible Flyer sled plus kite equals speed!

I don't know if this has been tried or posted before so bear with me! Today I paired my kids old Flexible Flyer sled- you know the ones with the metal runners that you can steer with your feet and my Flexi proteam 8 together and took them both for a spin on the local frozen lake. Holy:evil:!!! The wind was blowing at about 15-20 mph and the ice was smooth and fast. I sharpened the runners edges for help in turning and used handles for better control. Easily hit 20 mph! I did not think this would even work in relation to steering etc. so I was unprepared. I went back home and suited up [helmet, rash pants, basically bullet proof armor!]
When i got back to the lake there was several people iceskating and asking me "What the hell I was going to do?!" I just kept laying out my lines and smiling.. then launched and went straight downwind at ballistic speed. Everything was fine till I hit a block of ice from an old ice fishing hole then it was yardsale time! I went one way, my trusty improved sled went crashing like the General Lee on a bad day on the set! I got tangled in my lines and could not release the power till I rolled over a few times and watched my kite nose dive into the ice. No damage to the kite though! I was stiff and now a little bruised but I am going to add a control bar set up and a foot brake and try again. I might even break out the Beamer III 4.0! :karate:
Give it a try! It is just another reason to fly!

I was only able to go out 2 more times before the ice got soft and unsafe. I guess you could say I went upwind. The winds were blowing so I could go back and forth to my starting point without having to tack that much.

By any chance do you have any pics of buggy with skis ,what did you use for the skis ,I want to do this so badly with my buggy. When riding with it dose it steer well or dose it sort of slide sideways. Well thanks in advance for any advice or ideas. Mark L

I still need to work on the skis for my new buggy, the old one was alot easier. You will need 2 pairs of skis, pretty easy to find in trash/garge sales. I have 9 pairs sitting in my garage as I tend to convert things over to snow for the hell of it. To do this you can't have the skis sit flat or it won't hold an edge, this is much more important on the front. You need some square tubing, axcess to a welder, some skis and some 1/4inch plate. Cut the 2 pieces of tube so that they form a triangle, this will make is so they don't rotate if put on a single axis. You want said axis to be over the half way point of the ski. Then weld those 2 pieces together and cut the bottom of both to a 30* angle and weld on the plate and bolt the skis to that, when you put it on the buggy the skis will have a slight tilt with the outside edge on the ground and the inside edge off the ground. This allows you to hold and edge. The same concept needs to be carried out on the front but with 2 skis and a piece of angle iron can be used here. Not sure but because just an edge hits the ground, you may be able to run on ice as well.

Good luck and good wind!
