Cheap but functional harness?

I have a rather odd question...

I recently bought a 7.5m HQ Apex III as my first depower kite. I took snowkiting lessons this past weekend and had a great time, but on day 1 the instructors had us flying 3m LEIs to get some kite time in, then on day 2 it was so gusty (up to 50mph!) that I didn't even look at my kite bag all day and ended up getting moving nicely along on skis on a 2.5m 3-line trainer!

So the bottom line is I didn't get to play with my new toy, but the winds are looking light for this coming weekend (8-10mph), which I think is much more suitable for my first flight. Anyway, I have a nice Mystic harness for myself, but it's way too small to fit my hubby and he wants to have a go at flying the kite too (he is ~250lbs - no way my harness will work). So is there some kind of harness that we can get him just so he can have a go? He doesn't really want to invest a bunch in a nice harness at the moment because he's not sure he wants to buy a depower for himself. Would a rock climbing harness work? And if so, how do I set it up so all the kite safety systems will work on it?

Thanks for your help!

BTW - this is not a first kite for either of us... we both have a lot of flying time on 2.5m 2-line trainers and stunt kites, so we understand the wind window & how to launch. Safety is the key point here :)

I cannot recommend my Ozone Access harness enough, love it. it's only downside is it does not fit less than a 32" waist.(one size fits most!)

^^^^ the two listed above are going to be your cheapest alternatives. They are also good because they have a large range of adjustment. This way it should fit him with his snow gear and summer gear without breaking the bank.

Thanks folks! We abandoned the climbing harness idea... these look much better.

Annie - I really like my Mystic harness... fits perfectly over my snow gear and I have enough room for crash pads underneath the harness for summer landboarding :)

Jeff - I'm interested in the Rad harnesses... looking for something that will fit a 6ft guy with a 40" waist.

I know a bunch of buggiers who use the dakine speed seat. It won't work that well with a board though.

I recently bought the HQ harness from kiremare and I really like it. It's comfortable, doesn't ride up, is cheap and very solid. Prior to that I had a mystic and they seemed about similar quality, but the Mystic didn't come with a spreader bar and was a little thinner.

On a sizing note, the HQ runs way large. I have a 33-34" waist and I had to buy an XL. This seems to be about the same price as the Ozone Access.

If you wear a 34, and had to buy a XL, then the sizing runs very small, not way large....

Er... Yeah, what he said. :)

I've never worn an XL anything in my life. I wear a medium tshirt.

Incidentally, erratic, I like your siggy / Mood. ALL THE GEAR ALL THE TIME. I used to have the same mantra for motorcycling and it served me well -- especially when I didn't wanna wear it.

Thankfully, you're a respected individual who protects himself, or you'd have to deal with my drive by "where's your helmet?" questions..... ;)
