You don't need to buy a bar. The right conditions will have more of an effect on your success. The surface, wind speed, and skill with the kite and
board make the biggest difference. If you are under powered on a rough surface you won't have much luck. What kite do you have?

Odds are your kite is more of a stunt foil than an engine.
Still it should get you going with a regular skateboard on tarmac. No bar required but a helmet is a MUST !
Elbow , knee and butt pads are all a good choice before a bar.
Kites: 2.5m Profoil , Quadrifoil XL kitesurfer, NPW 5 Danger.
Flexifoil: 1.7m Sting, 4.9m Blade 3, 9m Blade 2.
Flysurfer : 19m Speed 2 SA, 7m Pulse
Peter Lynn :18m Phantom, 15m Synergy, 10m Synergy, 1200 Farc, 460 Sarc, 130 Tarc, 5m Peel, 4.2m , 6.4, 8.5 C-Quads, 3.5 LS2 single skin.
Rides: Flexi / P.L. Frankin'Buggy , Shaped + straight skiis, sand skis, Coyote blades. Core 95 ATB. RKB R2 ATB .

+1 for getting a helmet. Even if it is just a simple bmx helmet from walmart, which is what I used for a long time before upgrading to a much nicer
Icaro2000 hang gliding helmet. Alot of people don't like wearing helmets but it only takes hitting your head on something hard to kill you. If you
want to get into powerkiting you should definitely get one. A helmet has saved me several times.

If you want to use it as a trainer kite to practice the technique used with depower kites, just get a somewhat strong rod shaped object and tie the
hand straps around the ends. I used a piece of branch that I found on the beach, it broke towards the end of the second full day of use but was
definitely helpful for my friend to practice the control bar technique. The wind was strong when it broke so I don't blame the wood for snapping in
half.
If it turns "too slow" get a longer bar or place the handles further towards the ends, if it turns too fast, place the handles more towards the middle
/ get a shorter bar. I would try with something around 15 inches long and see how it goes. You can practice controlling it with one hand too, which is
necessary when using depower kites.
Too many kites, boards, and etceteras.
