5th line depower help!

I recently found myself to be the new owner of a 2004 Rhino 16m, the previous owner, im guessing, was using the 4-line setup.
There is about a 3 foot piece of rope attached to where the 5th line depower would go, basically i have no clue how to go about incorporating the 5th line into the bar if i decided to go that way?

Would the 5 th line connect the same as the other 2 depower lines to the trim? Or hooked up to the trim and roped into the safety leash?

O and how do i tell if the north bar i have is even capable of the 5th line?

I know i can count on you guys

A lot will depend on the bar itself. Reconnecting a 5th line is relatively easy as long as the bar is designed to work with a 5th line safety. Most 5th lines I've seen run through the center of the bar with the center line leaders then though the chicken loop assembly in some way to allow spinning but also a leash attachment.

If your chicken loop hardware is hollow, there a good chance it's designed to run a 5th.

Is it the bar that came stock with the kite?

I didn't think there were many safety features at all in 2004, much less 5th line.

2004 definately predates the 5th line. I believe Gin (RIP) were one of the first to add them to foils around the same time as FS both using similar yet different designs. It could be retrofitted on almost any kite that could be folded - though I don't know how they work on LEIs since you can't taco them?? so long as they can run tidy like through the bar and attach either to your harness or something that doesn't tear away when the safety is popped.

Here is a link to Ocean Rodeo's Fifth line kit manual.

http://oceanrodeo.com/images/uploads/kiting/pdf/5th_Line_Man...

I used it and parts I had at home to make my own. Pretty easy. The trick is getting the lengths right with LEI.

Pre 5th line people used the pump leash attachment point to add a fifth. I had to have a tab sewn in My old Airush because the had no pump leash attachment.

This kite won't exactly fly early and you will become overpowered very shortly after it will fly ! CAREFUL !!!!

That's a very large and powerful kite. Are you sure that your skills are ready for this level?

It's very easy to get hurt with the larger kites and there is much less room for errors.

If you have the 5th element bar (like mine) the 5th line runs as a seprate line THROUGH the bar and the small hole in the little black chicken loop stopper. (red line in the image below)

My 5th line also threads THROUGH the front (leading edge) line (before the Y) a couple times then right up to the nose of the kite (pump safety loop).

Hope that helps...
Steve

Ive read many informative messages on this board and appreciate and take into consideration every board member for yeara of experience, yes i am knew to the experience! I think of the rhino as a low wind kite for now, ive aquired 5 kites in the last 4 months and have had mastered them fairly quick. I know i am far far far from being and expert, and an open to all advice. My background as a commercial pilot atleast makes me think i have a decent idea of foils and the effects of wind, granted kites are obviously different, but its a good start involving angle of attack atleast. For a 2004 would you guys suggest i make a 5th line? Or is the 4 line set up adaqute for kitesurfing?
-many thanks, ive advnced in numerous strides, from this fourm and the members, hopemto contribute eventually

I don't fly mine without 5th line.
Makes re-launch SO much easier too...especially in LOW wind, like you're planning.

Great info by everyone, im fairly sure that my bar could run a 5th line, i would prefer it for safety reasons, big kite little guy haha. hoping someone could give me a step for step for the 5th line, as as farr as the power of the kite goes, in my opinion go for it and learn fast......experience def is better then age, but what better way then to learn. Most will disagree but id rather take calcualted risk then years to master a skill my bruddas,

5th element bar with a 4-line style relaunch. (Raw video)

Run the 5th line loose enough that it doesn't get tight fully sheeted out.....you'll see it dangling in the video, from my front line as I'm riding...just hangs out till you need it...If it's too short it will pull on the nose and make the kite "flag-out" and you'll loose power...

Be safe and ARMOR UP! Helmet/Pads

Fifth line is a much safer way to go. Also a huge benefit for relaunch. It sort of brings your 04 a year ahead since 5th line became common in 05.

Letting go of my old 4 line kite almost always ended in tangled lines. Less of that with a fifth.

Anybody know about an 2006 ozone instinct bar with progressive 5th line? How it works, how is it for safety etc. I'm pretty sure I have it figured out just checking.

Thanks
Craig

I have an ozone instinct 13m 2008. I wouldn't think the bars would be that different. On mine the safety release doesn't seem to do much on the 5th instead just pulling the line to the right of it to turn the kite side on in the air and drop it (this can be changed to the other top line depending on your preference on where your leash sits on the bar). When i've had to use it this system seems to work great (especially with my being such a LEI newbie).where the 5th does seem to come into play is in aiding the depower which it has tons of. It appears to be on a 2 to 1 pully system (done using the rings above the bar) in relation with the top lines. Loading up the 5th more as you depower. I've had a few good sessions on my ATB with it. It's complicated and messy, but overall very safe when set up right. Hope my exhaustive review helps :P

You should just get another preowned bar. the North 5th element that crazyherb posted is superb quality. A Naish Shift Bar will work well too. You cant easily turn a 4 line into a 5 line and purchasing the parts would probably be as expensive as getting a used bar.

You do want a 5 line set up for that kite though. it makes those old kites bearable. I have 2003 kites which are virtually impossible to relaunch without a 5th.

If you have 5 kites I assume at least one of them is a modern one? 2009 or newer? if not you should go buy one. It will be a bit of a revalation.
