First time on coyotes (flying twister 4.1)

first go on coyotes! Wind was a bit gusty, but I was on the edge of shifting to the blade... first time jitters kept me on the smaller kite!

This was a bit of an accidental session, I was planning on landboarding, but my bearings were frozen on the day... Took the coyotes instead.

fixed bridles, flying static, been two years now... ??? folks must be wondering....

sting 1.7, dp power 2.5, crossfire 3.2, ace 5, blade iv 6.5, ace 8, ace 12...

also a couple of arcs, 12 syn and 12 phanny, but i\'m not yet up to speed on them.

Nice safety gear  guess you didn't have too much wind to worry about though.

Good wee spot though, looks just right for the Coyotes ... I gotta have a go with mine :o I found on skates that you gotta be so careful about keeping tension in the lines, especially when the wind is light ... I recognize the deflated mess on the end of your lines

How were the skates?

Now you know why i put it in the video! Well spotted... thx

@ kami: pads were in the bag, brand new cheapies... I've since wiped out on landboard and found the pads don't stay put! I'm going to have to pony up for the proper stuff...

skates were good... a bit easier than the landboard, but I like the board better! My shins were killing me after ten minutes, but a tighter fit the second time i put them on fixed that... I've had a few sessions on the landboard since and I'm scrubbing speed hard with powerslides during my transitions, but I'm not sure if the coyotes can do that...

I wasn't going up wind on the landboard when I made this, now I am... I'm wondering if that will transfer over next time on coyotes...

Depends how you wipe out ... IMHO they're designed for direct impact and padding out the painful bits like patella etc but not for sliding - unless you're on a beautiful plywood skatepark :( eg. dropping down onto your knees and sliding down the vert ... getting yoinked forwards or sideways - ouchies!

I usually wear my hockey shin guards cos if they move a few inches, there's still another foot of protection  I've got a similar style for elbow pads - they were actually MX guards - and they're the shiznit!

Yes, it'll help :) more confidence with speed and power helps too :D I wouldn't try powersliding them, but you should be able to pull mad fast carving turns :o

@ kami... It's sliding that dismounts them... I'm looking at the 661 soft knee and elbow pads at the local bike shop, but at HKD $2k for the set they'll need to cut me a deal!

vreveal looks sweet, unfortunately I'm an appletard...

That's what I mean - the hockey pads wrap around a lot more top & sides ... they're not too cheap though either. What's a HK$ worth?

I'm sure there's even better software for the Mac

I am just thrilled to see Erik in motion! Looks like you finally found a good spot!

Yes on sand like that I can side slide and scrub off power. Upwind is'nt too hard on Coyotes. You will get it. You look to have the basics down. Just ride time now!

Hooking into a harnes between runs really helps getting back upwind etc. with less effort.

I guess you figured out that washing the salt off right after a sesion is important for the bearings. When you buy new ones spring for sealed bearings.

Very nice first session. Sweeeet place to fly. Beats the ultra gusty crap we have in soccer fields... and no goals to munch up your kite.

Once you get some speed from a dead start, carve up wind. This will take some speed off. (and save you some long walks back up wind.) That and taking the kite higher in the window at the end of your run. This will help scrub speed until you get the power slide thing worked out. When you get that down, share the video. I could learn a few things.

Hey thanks for all the thumbs up!

7.7 HKD to 1 USD, that help much there kami?

I've already thrown out the bearings that came with the coyotes... Yep I remember snobdr, I always thot it was short for "snob doctor", don't ask why...

Thanks for the vid... Been ages since I seen the golden dude around here, eh? jking, phree. Those jumps were blowing out the coyote tires? At 155# I don't think I'll be worried much, but they don't look all that quick to blow out...

So HK$2000 is like $250? That sounds about right for good gear :dunno:
chainreactioncycles.com has good shipping prices IIRC and isn't a PITA to use ... check them out.

I'm wondering if the tyres aren't rolling off the rims and causing blow-outs ...

left out a zero, more like $250 USD... The old ones were $20 US or so for the set.

hockey pads? I keep looking for them when i go back to canada, but the good ones ain't cheap and the cheap ones are all for kids... I'll check again later this summer if the bike shop guy won't give me a good price.

You mean phree's jumping blowouts were caused by the bead failing? I had in mind more like a balloon popping?

Fruit boots are just the universal name for roller skates. :) Skaters are plank spankers and bikers are metal humpers.

Oh I'm just guessing re. bead falling off the rim ... or maybe pinching the tyre on compression? Like a hard landing on an MTB?

My old Bauer guards were by far the best 'multi' purpose protection I've used ... and they didn't shift much at all. I doubt I paid more than $60 for them. I think my new ones were $100-ish ... from here - http://www.13sports.jp/SHOP/237648/list.html ... Y6,500 is about $65 ...?

I'm thinking on the beach you don't need a lot of impact protection, but a lot more slide protection ...?

Oh dude I just remembered - I have some knee & elbow pads lurking around going spare ... they're too small for my fat flabby legs - IIRC they're 661 DJ pads ... Yours for whatever it costs me to post them. They're brand new, I tried them on once but couldn't do them up  like this IIRC :

Furb , no, those jumps weren't blowing the tires. a couple months after that i started going out in higher wind sessions with the coyotes and speeds and airs just kept increasing ...the old accelerated mass thing and they yield.

at 200# the narrow 6" tire combo really aren't tight enough. the tires would not de-rim just slip within the rim. they would leak, slip on the rim and the tire/rim would be slightly out of round (get this crazy vibration) and usually after this event next couple airs then i'm on the rim/ flat ..the back one every time. then i tried just 2 tires and that lasted about 30 minutes. tighter tolerance tire /rim would def help.

Yes my pops always seem to be the back tire also.

It seems as though I pinch the tube ? The tires are rated at some crazy high pressure and I tend to run them soft. I think that is part of the problem?

Never had a blow out until I started getting over 5ft jumps.

There was a bit of wind... I got rolling a couple times with the 6.5 blade. The big problem was no safety gear and uneven ground... I'm OK with no safety gear on the beach but GP... wow rough ground for coyotes and soft spots. Much more a landboard and buggy spot methinks...

Got my buddy (20 years offshore sailing exp.) on a kite for the first time! That was the session-saver!

btw, the bearings on my coyotes seized up completely after that first session in the video. I have a replacement set of used bearings on there now (12 for $5 USD, gotta love HK) but I'm not risking another wet oceanside sand session until I have another set of bearings.

@kami... I found them really smooth on the beach, very easy, safe, and intuitive really. You'd be rolling instantly I reckon. But rougher ground will make a huge difference... Haven't tried them on grass yet.. Good luck w your back, dude.
