Summer East Coast Buggy Vacation?

I've been tasked by my family to come up with some choices for a family beech trip for about 15 of us. Now, you know where I'm going with this! I need to find a place that will allow buggying and landsailing all summer (if the crowd thickness doesnt jive with the best tide time.) and have enough activity in the area for the REST of the family. I love Jekyll, but not tons to do there, Folly Beach would be great and has all the shopping and stuff to do. We will try to find a house right on the beach so I can choose my buggy time a bit to deal with the crowds. Travel isn't an issue as most of them live on the east coast, up north. Wildwood? Outer Banks (areas that allow buggying for sure...?) Florida?

BeamerBob, I know you've got alot of miles on alot of East Coast vacation beaches in the summer so I expect a detailed report from you!

Suggestions?

You can get away with Buggying in OBX during the summer. Dinner time is the best time to try. The beach was relay steep & short last year. It is a Kite surf centered Destination but their are Buggy-able spots.

Nope, Wildwood doesn't permit after the lifeguard stands go up. Plus it will be LOADED with too many people.

Anyone know for sure if you can buggy Folly Beach, SC year round? I know crowds and tides dictate but I've only been there off season and its a great place to ride.

St. Augustine is your magic paradise. You have miles of empty beach at Anastasia State park where they welcome kite buggiers. Just miles away you have all the ghost tours in horse drawn carriages, a tour of the fort, and did I mention the outlet mall?

At Anastasia State Park not only is buggying allowed in the summer it is easy because the crowds thin rapidly as you move north. It's a non-drive-on beach and most people aren't willing to walk far from the end of the northern board walk. Other people's apathy is your friend.

Outside of the State Park, Anastasia Island allows cars for almost all of its length. This allows people to spread out more. So while buggying is allowed, it is more challenging to find an open spot where you can let loose. I would suggest you buggy outside the park on the weekdays, inside the park on the weekends.

There is a lot to do in St. Augustine. I liked it even before I owned a kite buggy. Now it's just that much better. ;)

Philip

P.S. note avatar photo shot at the park. ;)

Chris it would be awesome to meet up with you guys at Nahant. Not to far from us and a cool place. Cheesy it would be cool if you could make it too. What a fun time it would be. Lots of travelers and all the locals.

Very hard to get to, but Quebec's Magdalen Islands are supposed to be amazing. You have to get to Prince Edward Island and then take a ferry. The Magdalens are a group of sandbars in the Gulf of St Lawrence. Wind direction does not matter, there is always somewhere on the islands that the direction is good. Forty miles from the nearest land means nice clean wind.

Folly is restricted in swim designated (LG) patroled areas.................early am and evening runs are a treat. Sullivans Island sandbar has no restrictions and is good 3 hours prior to and 3 hours after low tide each day..............your bf tirues will float and you can walk or body drag out and back. You will have 20 to 30 kites flying inside the bar and another 30 or so outside...................amazing to see that many kites airborn at one time. There are 4 water parks in the area, shopping, great food, tours, etc for the whole family...................

Bob and I missed an important detail about kite buggying in the St. Augustine area: Don't stay on Vilano Beach. The beach at Vilano is steep and narrow. There's just not enough room.

The destination of choice is Anastasia Island which reaches from the inlet where St. Augustine is located down to Matanzas Inlet 14 miles to the south. The only difficult spot in there is the near the pier at 16th Street. The rest is wonderful.

Looks like St Augustine it is! Thanks everyone for your help and info!.

Could'nt find anything on Anastasia Island, nothing available for the size, ocean front, week that we wanted. Had to settle for Vilano for what we needed in size and such but I'll have my truck, load up daily to go to the state park. No worries. I'm hoping to get some runs in with the land sailers on the Vilano Beach frontage out front of the house though. I dont need as much room for them. We'll see.

Just came back from St Augustine and all I can say is WOW! It was by far the BEST family vacation I've had in years! Frankiter and I played at Anastasia State Park and the beaches are definately awesome; we had great wind, but it blew almost strait down the beach every day so we had alot of dune to water runs, down turn power slides, etc but it was still a blast, as any bad buggy day is WAAAAAAAY better than a good work day. I even got my wife to try out a Blokart finally! All the kids played on them too, and flew kites. great family day for sure! The town area and all the stuff to do was fantstic. No one got bored at all. We didn't even scratch the surface on all to do. Thanks everyone for the input and helping make the decision to go to St. A! I'm looking for another house for next year as we speak! I'm going to try to find something in Anastasia. We had to stay on Vilano this time, which would be great for the Blokarts if the wind cooperated but it was always SSE. Now, back to work. What a let down.
