I have been getting better on my ATM board but I really like to find a good place to snowkite this winter.

Since most of my friends snowboard, I was wondering if there are any location where we can do both. Are there any mountain resort in the North East that are "kite friendly" ?

Well, you could always try the Tug Hill region of upstate NY. Though our ski centers locally can hardly be called mountains, they do provide fun when the wind isn't blowing. Within a few hours drive Is Whiteface Mtn., I've never been there, but it's world class. When the wind is blowing, we have several areas that we ride, a few dedicated locals, and many friends from outside the area that come up from time to time. Yesterday we had rain all day but today the temp. has been dropping, and it has been snowing again. I usually try to post conditions around the area by Friday mornings, so check the Tug Hill thread for info.

Where exactly in the NE are you? I've heard there are kiters and locations east of NY, in Eastern MA, and in NH as well. Never been that way as its an even longer drive up from DC, but if thats your neck of the woods, you might want to check into that.

I am in NYC, since I don't have a car. Traveling will be pending on convincing my snowboarding friends to come along, which means that some mountain needs to be around. I am thinking of going to kite storm in feb. which is at a location closer to all the larger VT mountains.

Tug hill sounds nice but again I wouldn't have any way of getting up there, anyone willing to take on a hitch hiker?

Not to mention that I keep looking at those alpine video of people kiting through mountains and would really love the chance to do something like that. I know I'll have to travel a bit further but where can I go short of Europe for something like this?

Yeah, if you can get to kite storm, you'll meet lots of people and have a blast!(And, as you've observed, closer to the big mtns.) For Tug Hill, you might look into taking a train or bus from NYC to Watertown via Syracuse. From Watertown, I could arrange transportation to your hotel/then to kite spots, or you could rent trans.? crabnebula posted some late season video last year going up Mt. Washington in NH, that might be your best bet this side of the Rockies, but out west...

Your best bet is public trans to Syracuse/Watertown. If you are really out of your mind, you could take a train/bus to DC and one of us local nutters could pick you up and head north from there... Very roundabout though...

Take Amtrak to Albany/Renesselaer and you can ride with me the rest of the way (to tug hill and/or kite storm...).

I'm an hour south of NYC. I plan on heading up to Tug Hill Jan 15-17 and maybe Kite Storm, Mass or N.H. this season
You could take the Jersey Coast line down to Belmar and share the ride if that works for you.

I think I rope a friend in to make the trip to kitestorm, but I would very much like to make it to tug hill as well.
But I am still learning soo.. how newbie friendly is the tug hill event?

Tug Hill is very newbie friendly. As long as you dont mind wandering around in knee-high powder (sometimes less, sometimes more). Thats the roughest part... Otherwise its not big deal. There are normally plenty of people ready and willing to help out people who are still tring to get their stuff figured out...

As I only really see one kite you would be flying while up there, I would think one bag for your board, and another for your kite and you are set (bag for clothes as well, i would assume). So thats three bags... I guess you could use a shopping cart, but I wouldnt think that would be necessary...

I was going to head up Saturday morning, wanted to leave Albany area by 8ish. I've got to go to Syracuse on Saturday night to visit some friends and I'd stay there for the night, head back up to the hill the next morning.

So you'd probably have to hook up with somebody for lodging and (transportation to lodging) on saturday night. But I think that would be pretty easy once you're up there. I'm sure you could work something out with some of the fine folks on here ahead of time. But I can definitely get you up there and back if you want.

As for traveling on train, shouldn't be a huge deal as long as you can carry everything. Couple of kites, snow gear, and a board should be managable. Theres lots of room on Amtrak, especially on an early north bound, I take it all the time going back and forth to NYC for work.

I was talking about Saturday morning of the kite fest weekend. I may go up this weekend for a day trip if conditions are good enough, but yeah, a little wind would be nice.

I only had one chance to fly it so far, and between fumbling to setup all the lines and the bar correctly, getting the kite properly pre-inflated and not knowing what to expect. I was a nervous and excited wreck. I got it off the ground for a glorious few seconds and then sensing weakness, it immediately bow tied, inverted and turn into a giant train wreck after that.

Actually it was just like that date.... glad no one saw it..

Does anyone know of locations to snow kite in Worcester MA? I'm a college student and stuck to campus as I'm not allowed a car this year and really want to get out kiting.
