i saw a guy once in Filey who had attached a sit harness to his kite and was just foating about three meters off the ground, i havn't ever heard of it on the net and i'd love to give it a try, anybody know what/how he was doing?

Just floating around he was probably tied to the ground. This is called manlifting and is just about the most dangerous thing you can do with kites. Not only can you fall, but you can be pulled into the ground with force. There are many many associated risks with doing this and I do not recommend it.
