JIBE Talking!

acampbell - 22-6-2008 at 01:38 PM

I'm pleased to announce the new

JIBE
...the First Annual Jekyll Island Buggy Expo.

September 26th through the 28th, Kite Beach, Jekyll Island, Georgia.

A loosely organized buggy rally and fun-fly. I've just finished firming up the dates and major points with the Jekyll Isalnd Authority and the Georgia Highway Patrol.

Proceeds will benefit the Georgia Sea Turtle Center (and private tour will be included one morning during high tide)

Come out and play.
Late afternoon distance runs (4 miles each way, wind permitting).
Chase and taunt the Georgia Highway Patrol without getting arrested!
Much to do for the whole family.
More info at...

DAKITEZ - 22-6-2008 at 10:03 PM

looks like you have a great event planned
Your island looks great also, those beaches have me drooling.

markite - 22-6-2008 at 10:13 PM

Hey Angus
Looks sweet! Fiona and I have been emailing back and forth looking at photos of Jekyll island ever since you talked about it at NABX.
Not sure if I can do the long drive down from Canada for a weekend, but I can dream - and you never know...
Way to go putting this event together.
Mark

ripsessionkites - 23-6-2008 at 12:56 AM

good luck with the event. =)

damn that beach looks sweet, its like "Sunset Beach" of the East Coast.

BeamerBob - 23-6-2008 at 04:27 AM

I guess we could call it "Sunrise Beach"? This is a fantastic beach. The heavy crowds will be gone for the winter. We will be there for sure. I'll have a buggy by then if I can quit tearing up my stuff. I hope there will be lots of kiters there to pump up the fun.

Angus, you mentioned proceeds. Are we going to "pass the hat" for the turtles or will your auction be what generates the proceeds?

PHREERIDER - 23-6-2008 at 04:53 AM

sounds great, EAST COAST MEET, sweet

thanks angus

acampbell - 23-6-2008 at 04:53 AM

A small percentage of the registration fee will be reserved for the Turtle Center. Depending on sponsorship there will be some raffles, too.
I also have one of the customized Flexifoil buggies used by Team Riders Slawek Krawze, Will McKean and "Stupid" Dave Roberts at NABX. It will go on the block shortly and will have their signatures embroidered on the seat- truly one-of-a-kind. I'lle use the sale (probably eBay) to publicize the event and will direct the entire sale priice to the Turtle Center.

We share the beach with the fellas, so it's the right thing to do. Jekyll Island is a nesting area for Loggerhead and other species, and the Turtle Center is unique to the east coast- complete with "Turtle E/R" and rehabilitation center.

Thanks Mark. Had a great time at NABX with y'all. You guys are welcome any time. Maybe at the JIBE we will have time for a DIRTY BUFFET!!! Sandy Buffet? Hmmm...

Taper123 - 23-6-2008 at 05:08 PM

I doubt I can make it, but from talking to Angus in the past... the small registration fee and it's donation to the Turtle Center will help to keep this a very kite friendly beach, along with keeping the kiting community in a positive light. Any time kiters can help with a local cause, and enjoy what we are all passionate about... is a wonderful thing.

Hope everyone who can find a way there makes this a premier kiting event.

_____ - 24-6-2008 at 07:36 AM

Man this sounds awesome and I dont even buggy yet. Only thing that could make it better is if you could camp on the beach

acampbell - 24-6-2008 at 08:16 AM

There is a nice campground on the north end of the island (but you need to make reservations, as they book up) Nightime activity on the beach is restricted since that is when the sea turtles could come ashore and nest. I think late September is just outside of that season but they are still careful. Even the local suspension bridge has special lights on it so as not to disrupt the turtles' navigation.

silvereaglekiter - 24-6-2008 at 12:23 PM

Hay _____ you I and could carpool I would be camping also I sooo want to make it to this:yes:

_____ - 24-6-2008 at 12:35 PM

Im down Nick. I think this would be awesome.

BeamerBob - 24-6-2008 at 07:01 PM

Alright! New faces to meet! I'm really looking forward to this.

kullas - 25-6-2008 at 10:26 PM

I will be there for sure. It will be nice to get back on that beach again. I have been looking forword to this

BeamerBob - 26-6-2008 at 08:03 PM

We have made hotel reservations. Looking for a buggy now.

acampbell - 21-8-2008 at 02:40 PM

Thank you for your patience everybody, but the JIBE Registration is now open here...

http://www.coastalwindsports.com/JIBE2008.html#3

Registration is treated as a purchase on the secure site, but is a pass-through with all proceeds going to the event. The best I can do on cost is $45 with the Sea Turtle Center Tour and the full sit-down group dinner Satruday night with four entree choices.

Registration on-site will be $50. The more people that pre-register, the better I can plan for y'all. Extra Turtle Center Tour and dinner tickets are available too.

Only those with a buggy need to pay full registration.

Thanks

silvereaglekiter - 21-8-2008 at 02:51 PM

nice logo:thumbup: booking now thanks

revpaul - 21-8-2008 at 09:47 PM

Darn it.
My holidays are going to be booked according to at least one of these events next year. Looking forward to meeting some more of you fellas/dames.
Paul

BeamerBob - 22-8-2008 at 03:33 AM

Jekyll Island will spoil you, but come on anyway. I look forward to putting faces with some names. Two trips in one month is like a pot of gold for me. That along with having my own buggy these trips is just going to be too much. Sometimes I think about Angus living 10 minutes away and how cool that would be to just pop over after dinner for a buggy run.

kullas - 23-8-2008 at 08:29 PM

Just sent in my Registration and i am ready to ride. I like that link becouse it is a pic of me on the right hand side of the page :ninja: :D I will be good to see yall on the beach

BeamerBob - 24-8-2008 at 05:28 AM

There's a pic of me in there too. That was my first day in the buggy at last years demo. I'm the one with the red CF II behind my back. I'm in a white t shirt.

acampbell - 24-8-2008 at 08:06 AM

I hope to add a lot more photos from the event!

Recent updates to the JIBE page:
New map of the central part of Jekyll Island showing Kite Beach, the Historic District, nearby hotels and shopping.

Attendee/ Registration list (Bobby I put you guys on cause I know you have hotel reservations). I know of some known names I'll be able to add soon, but I hope to get more new first-timers to Jekyll !!

http://www.coastalwindsports.com/JIBE2008.html

BeamerBob - 24-8-2008 at 10:29 AM

I will register and pay fees soon, but yes we are in for sure. We had various wheel taxes, insurance, and a set of tires for the car hit us this month. Not to mention the appropriations for the flexi buggy. This tightened up the ways and means committee of one. We are Jekyll bound twice in September though for sure.

acampbell - 25-8-2008 at 05:55 AM

A few have asked about the condition of Jekyll Island Beach following Tropical Storm Fey.

Well low tide was in the evening yesterday so I went out late afternoon with the buggy for a thorough inspection. Water levels are still high, so the high tide was very full and the 6 miles of salt marsh along the causeway out to Jekyll was still flooded. At the beach there was hard-pack sand all the way up to the dunes and a lot of reeds, seaweed and other ditrius piled high on the beach, and it was clear that the surf had been well up into the dunes, but there was no erosion.
By the time the tide had receeded enough for me to set up, the breeze had settled to just 7-10 mph but a perfect ESE- dead 90 degrees to the shore. So out came the 8.3m PL Reactor.

There were not a lot of people, but as luck woul have it, packs of toddlers to the north and south of Kite Beach kept me boxed in to about half mile run for while- still just fine.
By 5 pm the toddlers were gone and I had the whole run- as much of 4 miles each direction as I wanted. There were still packs of beach-goers and picnic set-ups, but the beach was getting big enough that I could pass them down-wind at full speed with more than a kite-line distance, or if closer, I could raise my kite high enough for a moment so that my lines never passed over their heads.

The light winds left me maxed out on the GPS at 23 mph, but with a wide open beach and after 4 days holed up by that stupid storm, I could not have been happier.

kullas - 3-9-2008 at 11:39 AM

Just reserved my room at the microtel. was a great stay the past couple times so i expect nothing less this time.Im planning on getting there around noon on friday and heading on over to black beards to catch some wind. see yall there

BeamerBob - 3-9-2008 at 01:20 PM

I'll get in 10-12 Friday for that one. I hope to get more than I can take every day while the tide is in my favor.

acampbell - 9-9-2008 at 05:03 AM

I'll soon be mailing out event materiall and Island parking passes to registrants, so if you are planning to attend but have not gotten around to registering, this week would be a good time. See link below for more info and a link to registration.

I have firmed up the private group tour of the Sea Turtle Center for Saturday the 27th at 11 am. It will take about an hour and is half mile away from Kite Beach so we will be out on the beach when the tide is still dropping to full low tide in mid afternoon.- perfect.

Dinner is firmed up at Blackbeard's Seafood Restaurant overlooking Kite Beach. diners will have a choice of four entrees including meat, chicken, seafood and vegitarian options.

HQ demo day went well, so I'm looking forward to seeing some faces back againa and some new faces.

kullas - 9-9-2008 at 06:46 AM

It just makes me all warm over thinking about spending the weekend on the beach :) cant wait. I went to the turtle center i think it was the last time i was down, but will be neat to get a private tour

acampbell - 19-9-2008 at 04:05 PM

Registration packets with maps and parking passes are in the mail tomorrow for delivery by Tuesday/ Wednesday.
Each packet has three one-day parking passes. When you arrive on the island, hand in as many as you need for either a one, two or three day pass, depending on the length of your stay. We are only invoiced for passes turned in.

The Atlantic tropics are quiet for us with no storm activity, but please keep on thinking of our friends in the Gulf Coast.

BeamerBob - 19-9-2008 at 07:54 PM

I got 3 hours with the new buggy and the Crossfire II this afternoon with Crieke. I can't wait to get some coastal winds for 2 1/2 days. We'll either come in Thursday night or mid Friday morning. Can't wait. I'll be the one on the beach with the big grin. :D

silvereaglekiter - 19-9-2008 at 07:56 PM

I plan to hit the road early Friday morning to get their close to noon as I can :tumble:

acampbell - 23-9-2008 at 04:08 PM

OK gang, weather is good for the weekend! Wind is tough to call, though. NOAA says North, Weather.com says West. But at least it is clear that we have wind from somewhere and Friday at 20 knots!!
Everything else is dialed in: Parking passes, Sea Turtle Center Tour, Dinner Saturday. The Jekyll Island Authority has been awesome.
See you on the beach!!

BeamerBob - 23-9-2008 at 06:06 PM

I plan to be there by 10 am friday. 11 at the latest. Can't wait to see everyone. It will be only Wexler and I. Jared has a baseball tournament so we are going separate ways for this weekend.

PHREERIDER - 23-9-2008 at 06:39 PM

Angus i plan to be there SAT. about 1;00pm. i will pay and register when i get there if that is ok. doubtful i will stay for the feast. we have a party on the books here.

we have had great wind since last fri. N/NE honkin like mad, insane 5 hour session on sat. almost the entire tide swing.

should be a great time. low tide, wind and bags -o-fun.

chad

acampbell - 24-9-2008 at 04:48 AM

OK at least now the oracles agree that winds will be WSW Friday and Saturday, nuking over 15 kts on Friday- Not as good as East, but I'll take it over North any day. We should be good for fully lit distance runs. Stoked!

tridude - 24-9-2008 at 04:59 AM

yep, the NWS forecast confirms the same conditions here on Friday. I pasted this link for all you attending. If youre heading into the water (WSW side off there I believe) watch the along shore rips. The west component should clean the water up but you never know about the rips. I had the Scorpion out and surfed yesterday.................................. it was strong!

Chad you will be most welcome any time; we can work something out. See you then. Sounds like West winds 10-15 kts. Good for distance runs mayb just a bit lumpy.:wee:

acampbell - 24-9-2008 at 12:09 PM

Just got word that the Neos are here Stateside. I'll have an 11 meter in camo for the weekend; maybe not for Friday depending on UPS.

PHREERIDER - 24-9-2008 at 01:59 PM

Angus,

I'm cool with that, looks like WEST for the weekend. definitely gonna get some breeze.

just wrapped a mad miday session in the sound with a north wind on a rising tide.

may have a flaming V13 for saturday if ups makes before i leave.

peace

kullas - 24-9-2008 at 03:25 PM

Looking good here :) I will be leaving Thurs evening around 1 or 2 so i should be there for some flying on thurs evening. Winds are looking good

BeamerBob - 24-9-2008 at 05:59 PM

I'll have a new kite this weekend too. UPS delivers our Montana III 9.5m tomorrow. I'm first in line for a carnival ride on the neo when you start sharing Angus. I buggied for 2 hours today so I'm really anticipating some hard sand that I can slide on with some precision. I"ve spent about 5 hours in the buggy on hard dry grass with somewhat bumpy dirt underneath. The smooth hard sand is going to be heavenly, even with a west wind.:wee:

silvereaglekiter - 24-9-2008 at 06:24 PM

I'm hoping my Sieger NPW arrives tomorrow.
the info packet & my last new axle bolt arrived today Im all set:tumble:

BeamerBob - 25-9-2008 at 08:51 AM

Man, I'm useless today. I was tinkering with the buggy and loading some things in the car, and before I knew it, I had filled the preloaded cooler with ice. Oh well, it'll be good and cold already when I top it off tomorrow.

How is the gasoline availability down on the coast? Someone called talk radio here yesterday saying they drove to Orlando from Augusta and couldn't find gas anywhere along the interstate till they got to Orlando. I wonder if I should pack a few cans to make sure I can make it home. Several CS chains here have been out for 3-4 days now.

acampbell - 25-9-2008 at 09:27 AM

Good for gas here and exit 29 is the cheapest in the region

BeamerBob - 25-9-2008 at 07:46 PM

Our whole area ran out today. No station within 12 miles of my house has gas. I have 180 miles left and will head south in the hopes of finding gas before I run out. you might see me buggying down I-16 if I run out.

acampbell - 28-9-2008 at 06:08 AM

Despite the predictions of west winds, the sea breeze kicked in for southeast on-shore wind at up to 12 mph for a good part of the afternoon. Ripstop filled the air and we had over a mile to ourselves with few people besides spectators viewing from the dunes with mouths agape.

Air traffic control was a real challenge but it was nice to see that much color in the sky.

Chad (goldenmd) stacked two Venoms and tore up the sky on both water and landboard. Crazy.

I got a lot of miles in with my new HQ Neo 11m .

Wexler Muse was ripping up the beach on a landboard and his new Montana 9.5m.

More follies today. Pics to follow...

silvereaglekiter - 28-9-2008 at 06:41 PM

I made it home finally :bigok: Had a blast meeting everyone wish I could of hung around longer sunday But I figured I better hit the road

BeamerBob - 29-9-2008 at 03:31 AM

Wow, what an awesome time. The winds were much better for Saturday allowing some fast runs to the north and then work your way slightly upwind back to camp. My buggy skills improved dramatically having lots of time and smooth winds to work with, along with pointers from the more experienced. By Saturday afternoon, I was modulating long slides with fully powered turns. It was a real thrill to watch Wexler "get it" with his landboard. I gave him a 5 minute talk about the wind and the direction he needed to roll and he was gone, holding his line and sliding to a stop to head off in the other direction.

I commented to several people that they could try harder to hide their enthusiasm evident by the huge grins they had when riding by. I was excited to fly the new NEO 11m that Angus got on Friday. It looks awesome in the sky and flies like it has an engine in it.

Many thanks to Angus for his preparation and hospitality at a great event. Even the wind was on cue.

kullas - 29-9-2008 at 05:25 AM

We got there late on thurs. and hit the beach Fri morning. Winds were light on fri but i pulled the old trusty Pro foil 5.5 and rolled my buggy all over the beach. Sat started out light winds so back out with the 5.5 . the winds picked up around 2 2:30. I kept flying my 5.5 and got some great speed runs from one end to the other. .sunday we hit the beach for a little bit winds were light so we went exploring the island some Some great things to see there. We had a blast this weekend buggying and meeting everyone. We look forword to next year. Maybe see yall at Tresure Island this upcomming year for some buggy action

A big thanks to Angus for a great event

PHREERIDER - 29-9-2008 at 06:14 AM

Angus! my friend, fantastic time! great to get together with all the fliers. Saturday afternoon ride was nice, breeze was right on time, tide was right . 10-12mph perfect for land work. daily dose of venom always good. tight crew everything flowed nicely.
Great to meet everyone.
We all got to play in the planet's gift of breeze. Its why we are here.
GOOD SPOT!
chad

BeamerBob - 29-9-2008 at 09:54 AM

Here is one of my favorite pictures from the weekend. JIBE was Wexler's first chance to really have some good wind and a depower kite to hone his skills with the landboard. I'm really proud of how he progressed and how handily he picks up kites and makes flying them look easy. This is in his first 20 minutes with his new Montana. I've heard multiple different people make comments about big things to come from him in the future as easily as he progresses at this stuff.

Link to my favorite pics from JIBE 2008

kiteNH - 29-9-2008 at 10:15 AM

Nice pics! It looks like you guys had a blast. What a great playground. How much wind was Wexler landboarding in with that 9.5 Montana?

Also, I'd really recommend wearing sneakers or something similar when landboarding to protect your feet. :!: I think jumping off the board at speed would be a pretty easy way to bust a toe or two or otherwise injure your foot.

The sea-breeze picked up to about 12 mph

Thanks for the advice. Wexler hasn't been really sure what would be best to wear for shoes. I guess the straps are adjustable to accommodate whatever you stuff in there.

acampbell - 29-9-2008 at 12:30 PM

OK gang, here are some pics...

http://www.coastalwindsports.com/JIBE2008Photos.html

Thanks again for everybody that took a chance on this event.

I'm working with the Jekyll Island Authority for JIBE 2009 and am currenlty shooting for early May for the following reasons...

Stay tuned for details...

BeamerBob - 29-9-2008 at 01:01 PM

Great pictures Angus! I'm thrilled that the second annual JIBE might come as soon as May. I'm afraid I might be back before then though. That sand is so nice for the buggy. I can't seem to get my SUV to powerslide quite the same as the buggy.

I made an offer to everyone at dinner to share everyone's pictures with all the attendees. If you will send me a cd or email your pictures, I will make a cd or dvd for everyone and mail them back out to everyone so we all have everyone's pictures. I know Kullas's wife took loads of pics. Let me know if you are interested.

PHREERIDER - 30-9-2008 at 05:43 AM

nice, let's get the share on.

Bob
I just got them downloaded last night will send them on the way this evening

BeamerBob - 1-10-2008 at 07:27 AM

That will be awesome. Anyone else want to share their JIBE pictures? It's just as easy to put a bunch on there as it is the ones Kullas and I have.

BeamerBob - 1-10-2008 at 09:09 AM

An easy way to mail a cd is to cut some cardboard from a cereal box and fold it in the middle, tape the three open sides, and poof, you have a sturdy cheap cd mailer. I've done this several times now and it works perfectly if you aren't at work where there is a mailroom full of proper supplies.

silvereaglekiter - 1-10-2008 at 09:44 AM

I wish I had taken more Pics but I had a set of handles in my hands most of the time:lol:

PHREERIDER - 1-10-2008 at 11:40 AM

i have the same problem, always the rider, every else has more pics of the rider than the rider himself. we are all excited to ride, thankful for a cell cam or i would have nothing.

kitedog - 4-10-2008 at 06:18 AM

Hey Guys!

My bro and I had a great time in Jekyll. How was Sunday? Both of us we're jonesing pretty bad.

So, when's the next gathering herre in the SE?

Greg

acampbell - 4-10-2008 at 06:34 AM

Hey Greg
Sunday was pretty much a non-starter with light winds and high tide in the morning. Everybody used it as a travel day and it would have been hard to top Saturday. You guys missed a good dinner Saturday night though.

I'm checking with the Jekyll Island Authority to move the event to May 7-9, Thursday through Saturday

kitedog - 4-10-2008 at 06:52 AM

Angus!

Good news about the dates. We had a stellar session at Jekyll in May this year with minus tides and good wind. That would be fantastic!

Greg
