Snow cover at all ... Bare ice, Smooth or rough...thickness of ice(safety)..

CHICKENKOOP - 17-2-2020 at 09:52 AM

its all good right now. sunnapee was nice sunday good ice lightly drifted powder.
look at squambats facebook group for conditons all around the lakes region.

skimtwashington - 17-2-2020 at 11:42 AM

Are you saying it was mostly bare ice (or patchwork of bare ice w/drifts)??

Were you on skis or skates?

Picture on Facebook w/ Martin K. looks like Sunapee was all snow covered(but maybe ice was milky looking?) Never seen him use a kite, always using kitewing!

I'd go to Sunapee..where I usually go anyway. Was hoping to use skates over skis. So much lighter on the feet(by about 18-20 pounds!). Use whatever I have to though.

BTW..found cam at Winnipesaukee and looks snow covered there: https://www.winnipesaukee.com/index.php?pageid=weirscam

Snow and freezing rain coming. more surface changes.

CHICKENKOOP - 17-2-2020 at 12:06 PM

not any bare ice.
some refrozen slush.
with powder and some drifts.
skis will be a must.
when are you going?
maybe we meet up.

Trying to figure day with weather, wind and surface all pretty good. Looks like I missed some good recent days.:(

Tomorrow they may get half a foot new snow but then @ night rain/freezing rain.

I don't want breakable crust. :o

Kober - 18-2-2020 at 12:12 AM

Today at Great Sacandaga lake NY ..... about 6-8" ice and 5-8" snow , nice and soft ...

jeffnyc - 18-2-2020 at 09:45 AM

Are you there now, Konrad? Looks like a great day, launch from Lanzis? Unfortunately one of those weeks I have no chance of getting away...

Kober - 18-2-2020 at 12:11 PM

I was there 2 weeks ago for a weekend and last weekend ... Friday was amazing , fresh snow , sunny sky and 20mph clean winds

CHICKENKOOP - 19-2-2020 at 10:12 AM

good powder fell yesterday.
no crust in my backyard! hooray!
cold temps has me looking at sunnapee for saturday!

skimtwashington - 19-2-2020 at 12:36 PM

Anyone got pics, video...?

TEDWESLEY - 20-2-2020 at 06:45 AM

Try Hardwater Kiting facebook page. Chris goes to Wini on a regular basis.

skimtwashington - 20-2-2020 at 07:51 PM

Thanks Ted.

I don't Facebook(never joined and won't). Chris used to post conditions on his website(last post Dec '18) but stopped...?

Anyway went up today on Winni. Not powder but good windpacked snow. Nice to get out on skis.

Couple other kiters there using LEI's.

Wind got strong, had too much kite, brought out smaller, wind dropped, then brought out first kite again and voila! Then it mostly died off. Time to go home.

B-Roc - 21-2-2020 at 07:32 AM

Where did you launch from? Meredith, Laconia?? We've been attending accepted student days at colleges for the past two weekends and another 1 or 2 to get through so my weekends have been shot. I miss the days when I kite skied in my backyard.

skimtwashington - 21-2-2020 at 09:26 AM

Ellacoya state park, Gilford.

skimtwashington - 1-3-2020 at 12:02 PM

Anyone been on Winnipesaukee or Sunapee last couple days? Snow melted down and refroze..want to know what surface conditions are...?

CHICKENKOOP - 2-3-2020 at 09:05 AM

sunday sunnapee was a hard ice mess.
not smooth enough for skates.
half texture half glassy.

Feyd - 3-3-2020 at 06:03 AM

Anything South of the notches is boiler plate. Anything that was tracked up the day before the warm up, be it kite or machine tracks, ice fishing footprints etc. is not a fossilized snag fest.

North of the notches is better. The farther north, the better off.

skimtwashington - 3-3-2020 at 08:05 AM

Thanks.

Not travelling too far N. Think I'll wait for a 'Zamboni' ice resurface rain/warmth melt/refreeze.

One time Sunapee was impossible with deep refrozen machine tracks, so heading home, by chance stopped and got tip at Nordic Skater shop and day was saved going to Otter Pond near north end- hardly tracked.

skimtwashington - 3-3-2020 at 01:52 PM

Found video from that day On Otter pd.

Doneski using two modes:

On skates:

On Skis:

We had Fun!:wee::wee:

TEDWESLEY - 4-3-2020 at 12:26 PM

Like the man said, we got all the boilerplate you've longed for. Warmth and sun may erode the
surface to something that can be ridden, but it's rough sledding just now.

Feyd - 4-3-2020 at 03:36 PM

The ice near me is drying out. Just south on Squam and winne, big puddles.

Hitting moore rez tomorrow AM. Hoping that it's corning up.

skimtwashington - 13-3-2020 at 06:37 PM

Looks like there's still ice(safe) and riding to be had.

kite skiing

I wonder how thick at Sunapee or Winni'? Hope it lasts a while.

Need to return North..

TEDWESLEY - 14-3-2020 at 07:36 AM

Yoy want to be checking Hardwater on facebook. Nice shots of fissures on Winni. Yesterday we had rain.
We rode Long Lake 3/11 when we left the surface was corn of the mushy sort. My guess is that Long may be done.
