JIBE DATES 2013: MAY 8-11

 Pages:  1

acampbell - 7-6-2012 at 06:19 AM

JIBE is of course the Jekyll Island Buggy Expo, on Jekyll Island, Georgia.

Some have asked for dates now because they need to book vacation rental properties (see below*) or put in for time off from work.

Looking at the tide tables, it looks like Wednesday May 8 through Saturday May 11. Low tide is 2:27 pm Wednesday and 4:26 on Saturday- perfect.

EDIT: Web site updated for 2013 with new dates.

The portion of the JIBE web page with registration info can be found here.

To go direct to purchase registration on my secure server, click here.

Keep in mind that this year, the only way to get a T-shirt is to pre-register. If you register on site, you will pay less and not get a shirt. I might have a couple of extras for sale but there is no guarantee. (tired of losing my shirt on shirts)

Yes I know that Mothers Day is on Sunday the 12th, but this has happened before without too much trouble. Some have just had to leave a bit early on Saturday. Perfect solution: bring your mom! (Several have, and remember that there is much to do in the Golden Isles Region besides kiting)

I will also need to clear this with the Jekyll Island Authority [EDIT: Done], but this should not be a problem as it will likely be the weekend before the Triathalon, giving us even more latitude.

* Vacation rental properties are a popular and attractive alternative to hotels if you are traveling with a small group or in some cases, pets. Cooking for yourself on a grill or in a kitchen as opposed to eating out every night makes it even more affordable.

The Jekyll Island Buggy Expo is a loosely organized rally and fun-fly for kite buggies, but land boards and land sailors are welcome. Jekyll Island is an unusual venue and one of the finest kite buggy sites on the east coast. Jekyll Island is a state park with many attractions and amenities. Beaches are not crowded and are over a football field wide at low tide with hard-pack sand nearly up to the dune line. The length of beach open to buggying is about 4 miles.

Jekyll Island is in the Golden Isles Region of southeast Georgia, about half way between Savannah and Jacksonville, FL. It is 15 minutes from I-95 and an hour from Jacksonville International Airport (JAX). The region offers much to do for non-kiting family members, so many JIBE attendees make the event a family vacation destination. There are a variety of affordable hotel options as well as a very nice campground on Jekyll Island.

Feel free to post questions or e-mail me. (angus "at" coastalwindsports.com )

LMAO!

No worries buddy!

Already have vaca days planned with work,... Jekyll thurs. - Sat. ... St Simons Sat. - Sat. :singing::singing::singing:

Already excited.

pbc - 14-6-2012 at 03:49 AM

Excellent. It's on the calendar.

I'm glad it's not the triathlon weekend. This'll cut down on the competition for resources of all kinds.

Well we don't know that for sure yet as the JIA has not yet set the date for the Triathalon. It's just that they have so far always done it the weekend prior to Memorial day weekend and we are now a week ahead of that.

But in any event the farther we can get from Memorial Day, the better.

Dagon - 19-6-2012 at 10:15 AM

This would be a fun event and I am thinking I could probably make this happen. What speeds do the winds usually blow at?

Drewculous - 19-6-2012 at 03:58 PM

~20mph based on last two years

The typical NOAA forecast for Jekyll island this time of year is 10-15 kts with some component of east built in. It will often start out in the day with much less, but in the afternoon when the seabreeze kicks in around 2 pm or so, it will build to something higher. This gives us on-shore winds with beam reaches.

20 mph + with smoking sand is frequent but not as constant. That's when the water riders get excited and we had some great winds this year for sure. This year we had 20 mph from the NE due to frontal conditions and early tropical storm activity. This was great for seasoned riders but awkward for some novices.

Over the 4-day spread there is usually something for everybody.

Dagon, if there is anything I can do to help with local info, let me me know. There is much to do here for the entire family.

csa_deadon - 20-6-2012 at 01:56 AM

Hmmmmmm

mougl - 21-6-2012 at 05:30 PM

Sean, this is NOT optional. You WILL be there or I'll tip the Yak off to your whereabouts! Besides, you don't want to miss out on

csa_deadon - 21-6-2012 at 09:41 PM

Scott, looking at dates, work, etc. right now it actually looks like driving is the cheaper option compared to flying and shipping gear. Shipping a Majestic is screwy expensive!

Did you say cookies? :eekdrull:

soliver - 21-6-2012 at 09:59 PM

man, yall got me buggin' on these cookies... I may have to bring an extra vial of insulin.

frankiter - 23-6-2012 at 10:10 AM

If all goes according to plan, I'll be there with the cookies!

Short hijack
Aunt B and her cookies will be in St Augustine 6/29 to 7/5. Chris and I will have all our gear, so let us know if you wanna hook up to buggy or just eat cookies. We'll be doing both!
Hijack complete

rocfighter - 23-6-2012 at 12:30 PM

Frank where is this St Augustine? And Will Chris have the Kite Fort there?

frankiter - 23-6-2012 at 04:05 PM

@ roc, it's in Florida, just south of Jacksonville. We're doing a family reunion week there at a real house. No kite fort this time.....

Web site updated for 2013 with new dates.

I will tweak the site more, but the basics are there with boilerplate data and new dates.

Event registration will be up at the end of the year.

Feel free to contact me if you need travel advice or have any other questions.

fletcht - 15-12-2012 at 06:07 PM

It is official, or as official as 5 months out can be. I, we (wife and dog, maybe cat) will be making the trip to Georgia in May. The plan is to arrive there by May 7th, and be staying at the State Park.
Question, how soon in advance should I make reservations? Also, if I leave my rig at the park can I bicycle my buggy and gear to the flying area. I can work up a hitch to haul but not sure of distance and logistics. Would like not to have to move the MH and trailer each day.

Thanks, I'm excited to fly on the other coast.

bigkid - 15-12-2012 at 07:07 PM

Fletcht, I'll give you a ride in the truck if your up to it.

pbc - 15-12-2012 at 08:03 PM

You can reserve pretty late and still get a campsite at the Jekyll Island Campground. The weekdays are very quiet though it will fill Friday and Saturday.

Standard Operating Procedure at JIBE is to dump the buggies on Buggy Mountain at the Kite Fort--Chris' motor home. I don't know if Angus has gotten the "Kite Fort Permit" for 2013 yet, but in past years this has worked marvelously. Chris parks the KF in the parking lot by Kite Beach half-way between the ramp and the walk over--it's a truly awesome location.

We erect some tarps, set up some lawn chairs, and hold the daily pre-event there. It's a fine social gathering. Bring food, beverages, your favorite traveling chair, and tips for the cookies jar.

Some folks leave kites at the Kite Fort as well, but sometimes it rains, so plan accordingly. Make sure you don't leave any gi-normous kites on the ground where the water will pool. Isn't that right, Dean? ;-)

As for the bike trip, the island is very bike-able with low speed limits, light traffic and lots of sidewalks. It's 3 miles from the camp ground to Kite Beach.

If you have trouble hauling gear or yourself, know that you will not be alone at the campground. There are 3 regular groups at the campground including my own. I'm happy to help haul gear and I might end up with a free seat or two as well.

I'm so glad you're coming. We always have a good time and would love to share that.

Philip

van - 15-12-2012 at 10:37 PM

Road trip from Texas anyone?? Haven't been to JIBE so I really need to get it on my to do list for 2013. Wish I can bring the family but kids are still in school. Will have to see, I guess they can miss a few days .. haha.

acampbell - 16-12-2012 at 07:32 AM

Evans, great to hear that you are coming east for JIBE; I look forward to meeting you.

Philip did a good job of describing the environs (thanks!)

For 2013, JIBE is a week earlier due to tides and closer to the snowbird migration along the I-95 corridor, so I would recommend getting reservations early, just in case. Jekyll is a popular stop for snowbirds and the many RV's they drive.

We will no longer have the same Events Coordinator contact at the JIA (Jekyll Island Authority), as Beth has moved away, but we should have no trouble with negotiating for the Kite Fort. I met the Executive Director of the JIA the other day at a luncheon and he is fully aware of JIBE and offered his support for the event. I've heard nothing but positive comments from JIA staff about how gracious and friendly JIBE attendees are, so thank you all for that. We are not the biggest event on the island but they are aware that we do much to promote the destination.

Right after the new year I will start firming things up and let y'all know.

The campground phone is 912.635.3021

The new link is http://www.jekyllisland.com/stay/campground/
email: campground@jekyllisland.com

If anyone else has questions or needs assistance, let me know

martinipro - 17-12-2012 at 07:50 AM

I've heard great things!

Anyone from the Northeast willing to make the road trip!?
13 hour drive for me(from NJ) but if I get 2-3 more people interested count me in!

bigkid - 17-12-2012 at 08:24 AM

I will be there with a big smile and droopy eye lids. Going to drive from Seattle and stop at WWBB before I head south to JIBE.

Anything you all need from the PNW, like rain, snow, traffic jams, California drivers, coffee drinking women putting on makeup and talking on their phones as they drive to work? Maybe some kites, boardz, buggies, etc, etc?

fletcht - 17-12-2012 at 12:12 PM

Thank Angus for the link. I've made my reservations, and have been confirmed. One question however. This line was on the confirmation email I got from the Park.

"Do not use GPS once on Jekyll Island."

Are you guys in some kind of Bermuda Triangle area over there? Or, is it just best to not know where you are going? http://www.powerkiteforum.com/images/smilies/saint.gif

Looking forward to the trip.

Evans

pbc - 17-12-2012 at 01:45 PM

Evans,

The problems only exist on roadways that due to construction. I thought that was done, but only Angus knows for sure.

The important details are: the buggy site is just a little bit north of the bridge; the campground is at the far north end of the island. Angus is kind enough to provide maps for the directionally challenged on his JIBE pages.

That''s pretty funny. You will not turn inside out or go back in time if you use a GPS, but it turns out you might be misdirected. I just got off the phone with Amber at the campground, and she explained that using a GPS to get to the campground will misdirect you to the Jekyll Island Club Hotel because the coordinates on the island are not accurate.

Luckily, navigating the island is easy. The main road is a big loop around the island oriented north- south, with one half of the loop along the seashore, and the other half along the Intracoastal Waterway, with a couple of east-west crossroads to bisect it.

You can get a map at the info center and Welcome Center on the causeway, but otherwise head north on the island past the convention center and the JIBE staging area and you will find the campground

fletcht - 17-12-2012 at 03:23 PM

Thanks guys, Philip, I'm not usually directionally challenged, but odd things happen when I'm on an island. With water all around every direction is west.. I was just kind of thinking maybe Jekyll island was in some other dimension, and our methods of navigating out west wouldn't work. Take me to your leader.

Evans

The JI campground is great, I've been there twice this year, and they're super nice and helpful. The campground is awesome. Very protected, and clean, great bath houses WIFI etc etc etc. Jekyll Island is an awesome, family friendly place and my family loves it. I'll prob. be making my reservation soon.

This will be my first JIBE,... I'm coming by myself on Wednesday afternoon and then my wife and kids will be arriving Friday afternoon. I'm excited to meet you guys in person!

House is reserved family and i will be arriving on the 4th- For all those thinking of coming to Jekyll- It is my little nirvana for landboarding and kiting. You will enjoy it (just to clarify how much i like it- its a 9 hr drive one way and i usually do it at least 3 times a yr)

I just did a 30+ hour drive to Alabama to visit the inlaws :)

As much as I hate to do it I would need to fly to this one. I would have to figure out another plan for my buggy. When I went to wild wood I think the final shipping total was around $450 if I remember correctly.

mougl - 17-1-2013 at 01:36 PM

I can offer dry storage, sun-protected storage for your buggy. What's more, I'll take it out regularly to keep the bearings from freezing up and provide complimentary delivery to JIBE. :-)

Philip

soliver - 29-1-2013 at 06:26 PM

Very fortunately for me, my family was able to work out our annual trip to St Simons Isl (neighbor to Jekyll) for the week after JIBE, so once my wife and kids and i leave JI, we'll be driving about 15 minutes up the road to meet my in laws for another week on the beach.

What's more is that my father in law rented us all a house right on east beach, thusly I can walk out the back door hop on the bug and ride.

My point is, if anyone is still around the week after JIBE and wants to check out St Simons too, let me know and we might be able to work out a ride!

martinipro - 13-2-2013 at 09:58 AM

Does anyone know the average wind speeds during that time of the year?
I'm still considering the Trip and trying to figure out how to make it work!

Thanks Scott
Yeah starting in a few weeks the default weather pattern is the Bermuda High sitting off the Carolinas and rotating clockwise, bringing us some component of east wind. Then typically the sea-breeze effect in the mid day sun grabs that wind and pulls it on-shore more directly.

The exception would be to some frontal activity but that is less common starting late march going forward. In the last 5 or so years we have always had ridable winds at least 1 or 2 days or more for the 4 day event. Many stay a week and rent a cottage for the same price or less than hotel and make a vacation out of it. They always get a lot of rides.

I'm planning to go this year, and this will be my first attendence of kitting event ever; every excited!

I've just read the guide, so All I need to do is to send the waiver form and register for the event, and I assume the $22 covers all 4 days?

tridude - 9-3-2013 at 08:11 AM

http://www.ikitesurf.com/windandwhere.iws?regionID=205&s... in mind JI runs almost due north/south, 0-180 degrees so this wind and direction rocks it.........also good speed and direction for the bigger inflatables, HQ Matrix, and Flysurfers..........look forward to some H20 time with Phree, NF Leech, Greg, Chris, and Scott.......

NFish,

The $22 covers the entire event to include your event t shirt and Im sure Angus has a few other items he could comment on.............great event, look forward to meeting you there........winds permitting Ill be on the water most of the time so my fixed bridle quiver and buggy will be available to fly/ride..........

acampbell - 11-3-2013 at 05:45 AM

Jekyll, or the stretch of beach we use most is actually closer to NNE to SSE so an ESE wind is the sweet spot for dead on-shore. But because of slight bend in the beach at the sand-bar (right at the staging area), any wind with an east component is useable in some fashion.

Formal registration will be up in the next day or so and this year only pre-registered participants get a t-shirt. Those who walk-on with no pre-registration get a discounted rate with no shirt. That fee will cover cost of event insurance and free cold drinking water on the beach.

Nfish - 11-3-2013 at 09:52 AM

Thanks for the info. That sounds pretty cheap for the insureance, T-shirt, and free COLD drinking water

It's cheap because Angus is a swell guy and doesn't charge for his time to organize the event

JIBE is on my plan to try to make it this year ... expect some freebies from VTT whether I can make it or not. I will send some stuff to Angus if I can't show up personally.

soliver - 14-3-2013 at 04:36 AM

Here's a weird question,...

My wife and kids will be coming late Friday. I will have a tandem and am certain my kids (and maybe wifey) will want to ride in the tandem. But I'm certain they won't be riding on their own. Will they require a registration fee as well?

That's some kind of weird loophole?!?!?!?!:puzzled:

pbc - 14-3-2013 at 04:51 AM

Another tandem. Awesome.

I really enjoy giving people rides. Part of it is getting to share the joy. Whether my passenger is old or young I get a reaction when I drop the kite through the power. Sometimes I get screams from my passengers. It really is marvelous.

The other bit I like is the excuse to fly bigger kites and feel even more strain. I switched to a load-transferring rig that puts the front wheel weight of the rear bug onto my rear axle. It allows me to handle so much more power. The pull is insane and the acceleration hardly feels diminished.

It's such a rush.

Philip

acampbell - 14-3-2013 at 05:42 AM

No registration needed for tandem passengers. They should be covered under insurance as spectators. Pilots with kites or sails and wheels under them should register since that provides insurance for themselves and liability coverage for injury to others including the ipublic.

bigkid - 14-3-2013 at 08:28 AM

Out of curiosity, if I get a NAPKA permit for my use at jibe, will I still need to sign up and register?
I will register anyway, as I want to help promote Jibe and support you in all the work you freely donate to the sport, along with freebies from a bunch of companies including BKK.

I have a rumble seat on my Apexx for those that want a ride, is that going to be considered a tandem rider?

I am getting excited about seeing all the names here on the forum, in case you dont know what I look like, I will be wearing a kite name piece of clothing. PL, Ozone, Flexifoil, HQ, and a few of the great ones like PKD, MG CrooZer, Zebra, Libre, and of course Big Kid Kites. (you can wear a great piece of kite clothing also, find me on the beach and ask me how)
This is going to be fun.

flyguy0101 - 14-3-2013 at 09:09 AM

Jeff- Jibe has not been a NAPKA event in the past and dont think it will be this year, Angus has always just purchased a seperate insurance policy for the event so registration will still be required. Any proceeds over cost have always gont to the turtle rehab center on the island- which i suggest you visit while there. Look forward to meeting you at both events

Your right, it isnt a NAPKA event. The nice thing about NAPKA is that I can go anywhere and hold my own event and have the insurance and the backing of NAPKA. I will be spending the better part of 13 weeks on the road covering most of the US and you had better believe that if there is a place to fly, I will give it a shot. Who knows, might find a new place and create a new event while I am out and about.

And yes the wife wants to see the turtles, as long as they dont wear masks and yell "Cowabungu".

I'll only be spending about half that time on the road, but keep me posted if you find great places to fly. The return trip is left pretty open to wander.

Angus, is registration open? Online?

Yeh, saw that i was wondering if there was a pay online registration form. I'll send money and waiver form via mail. I've done that before. :)
By the way what is the extra lunch? Do you match the peanut butter and tomato sandwich that I pack or do you offer something good. I'll pay for something good!

do wives pay registration if they may only be a tandem rider? I know they pay for tours, etc.

I'll do the turtle tour, with or without mask and cowabuga. just tell me if i pay now or at the event. mail or online.

acampbell - 20-3-2013 at 05:54 AM

I'll try to have registration links up later today- several folks have asked.

There are no group meals. I have gradually deconstructed and simplified the event over the years. If you found a mention of a lunch, it is an artifact remaining on an old PDF that I missed removing. In an environment such as Jekyll there are so many good distractions that any group event is like herding cats. Group dinners are tough because people tend to fall asleep in their plates after a long day on the beach in the sun.

There will be a group tour of the Turtle Center and that will be at the same $10 cost as if you went yourself, but we benefit as a group by being accompanied by a specialist who can explain things and answer questions one-on-one. It will be on Friday or Saturday Morning at high tide when the beach is not as usable. Details to follow.

No fees for wives or family tagging along, even in a tandem. Registration only for those who have BOTH a kite or sail in hand AND some kind of wheels under them.

Looks like my trip to Virginia Beach will be shorter than expected and we're going to make the drive to Disney and take the kids down there for 6 days...... Seems that JIBE is right along our path home!! SWEEET!! Gonna stop in for the day Saturday and check out the fun!! Hopefully put some faces to names and enjoy some kiting fun!!!

acampbell - 25-3-2013 at 06:27 AM

Registration is up and ready. Sorry to take so long but i was having trouble with my FTP client this weekend, keeping me from uploading the new document.

(tired of losing my shirt on shirts)

bigkid - 25-3-2013 at 10:59 PM

I can bring my shirt press for the transfers, or order the shirts if needed.

pokitetrash - 26-3-2013 at 10:17 AM

Getting excited to see everyone! Someone is going to have to re-teach me how to fly! Been too long... :embarrased:

pokitetrash - 26-3-2013 at 10:20 AM

Frankiter. Is Aunt B tooling up the factory? Being in the manufacturing business as you and both are, you know the value of scheduling and planning. I think a test batch should be made and sent to me for quality control before release to the public. Can't be too careful. :cool2:

frankiter - 26-3-2013 at 11:14 AM

Chris,
I can assure you we take quality control very seriously and keep up with the latest testing methods. I personally make multiple checks of every batch before it ever leaves the kitchen. And we have even started what we like to call the "Rogue Trucker Lick Test". That's right, every cookie gets licked.

I'll check with the CEO to see if she feels the need to outsource any testing to an independent laboratory.

On the island, there is nothing bad. Buildings are old but renovated and kept up, so shop by price. Days Inn, Oceanside. Hampton Inn very nice but more $$ I think. They are breaking ground on two new properties new the convention center but they will be for 2014. Same with Holiday Inn taking over the old Clarion property to the north. This kind of development will be welcome

Mainland at I-95 exit 29 there are several inexpensive but decent offerings. Over the years many of my guests have used MicroTel Suites with good reviews but Philip seems to have had a bad experience there. Others have used Econolodge and Super 8 with no complaints. "Clean and decent" are comments I hear a lot. All fifteen minutes from the beach.

acampbell - 27-3-2013 at 10:19 AM

The new Toll Plaza, located about halfway out the Jekyll Island Causeway, is now operational. The machines take credit cards as well as cash, and their is usually an attendant for assistance.

Fee is $6 a day or $28 for a weekly pass.

If you feel you might visit Jekyll a few times a year, the annual pass for $45 is a good deal. It gets you a bar-coded sticker for your back right window that is laser read in the far right lane, and the gate opens with no waiting.
