npw race?????

bugymangp - 15-3-2006 at 10:40 AM

does anybody know if we are going to have that npw`s on handles race???? i know we were talking about it but is it going to go off. i`m not one for racing. but npw`s on handles is one race i wouldn`t mind doing. also i would like to use short lines. i made up a set of 5ft lines and they worked great at dbbb. i don`t have to worry about running over the npw with my back wheel.

action jackson - 15-3-2006 at 10:59 AM

YES!!! I for one think it would be a blast a a great view for the spectaors.I think we do need to set a limit on lines though to make it a tighter race. How about 10 ft max? any opinions. I know susan is on the road but plans on it. Let me know....................aj

Gonna purchase some new line for my Sky Tigers and plan on cutting the old ones into shorter ones to be used with my NPW5 LK 300 6.9m. I've never tried it before, is there a trick to get them all the same length? What is the best length to fly a LK 300 6.9m?

Thats a good question! I like to fly them with no lines but here is a chart for use and lines.

40m lines -5-12mph
30m line 7-14mph
20m lines 9-16mph
10m lines 11-18mph
no lines just off bridles-13-25+mph

it depends on your skills also so please factor that in

also if you use a harness, recommended if you are comfortable with your abilities

Thanks for the data on different lengths. Entered the data into my info file. 've been all over the internet, can't find short lines to buy, gotta cut the old ones, any idea as to how to get them (set of 4) to the same length?

action jackson - 16-3-2006 at 12:52 PM

Larks-head one end to a fixxed object(all 4 lines together) and then stretch to deesired lenght and cut. Then retye or wait till nabx and i will show ya....................aj

bugymangp - 16-3-2006 at 01:14 PM

hey tigger
yea. just bring your old line sets with you and i can help you too.
don`t forget. your going to need some kind of sleeving needle and sleeving.
just about everybody whos buggys makes their own line sets.
most store bought line sets come 300lb over 200lb.
i like 300lb over 150lb. i find the 200lb brake line puts to much drag on the kite.
feel free to pick my brainout there with any questions you might have about buggying.

jonesing4wind - 16-3-2006 at 05:17 PM

You will find no shortage of advice and opinions, and maybe even some good ones ;) We are a bunch of excited kids who love to talk about the wind and all we can do with it. ANd we love to share and show off our toys. In other words, any questions you may have will be eagerly answered by just about anyone on the lake.

What I do...

I use a dulled, polished smooth darning needle to run the line back onto itself, like sewing. This has two advantages: 1) Much stronger than sleeving and knotting. The first time I kitesurfed was on 200lb line with loops made this way. 2) The lines can easily be adjusted to be the same length. Simply slide the line through until the lines are the same. The size of the loop determines how much adjustability you have.

For added durability on the loop a length of sleeving can be used, but just as a covering to the loop, where a larks head knot would be made.

This picture is of 500lb spectra, with the needle used to do this.

Steve

jonesing4wind - 16-3-2006 at 09:40 PM

Geokite,
Doesnt it slip back through when under tension? Do you need to take care not to split each side of the braid, or can you just shove the needle through anywhere? I have heard that splicing is best, but dont try splicing the tiny fibers on kite lines! Also, sleeving and sewing seem pretty popular lately, but I really like your idea!! Quick and easy!!

Sean

Tigger - 17-3-2006 at 01:00 AM

Gotta a million question as to how my new toys work, I'm sure I'll get a million answers to them at the playa. I am really looking forward to meeting everyone involved in myne new hobby.

Gonna spend most of 5 days on the playa, if I get a chance to get away from my voluntary commitment (Registration) for a few minutes, I may even learn how to buggy.

Phugger - 17-3-2006 at 08:15 AM

A more elegant way to create loops without knots is to splice them as shown HERE. They aren't adjustable, but will not slip. I can do 90lb lines with some difficulty - 200lb line should be childs play. The trick is getting the splicing wire or latch hook through the hollow braid.

No, it doesn't slip. The tension in the line pinches the threaded line, holding it in place. I thread the needle right through the center of the line, just being carefull to not break any fibers (that's why a polished smooth blunt needle is important. Sharp needles will break fibers. I use a hand lense to examine the needle head when preparing the needle). Is this quick? Certainly not quicker than sleeving, but in the long run it is better. I used to splice (with a splicing tool), but found this to be much easier.

I run the line back through the line about 20-30 times. I've never tested smaller "threads", and never had it slip through.

History lesson

action jackson - 28-1-2007 at 07:58 PM

NPW - THE BEGINNING
NPW5 was invented in 1993. The original planform already existed as a parachute in the early 70's. We used the technical concept of the parachute and build a stuntkite after studying the original technical information. The first full scale, experiments dated from 1974. After preliminary experiments in the windtunnel of Langley at the NASA Dryden site, there were helicopter drops and tower drops. Goal was to find a controllable parachute for landing Appolo capsules on earth after a journey in space.

The parachutes used in the Appolo flights were unprecise, therefore the landing spot for the capsules was unpredictable. By using all-controlable parachutes the rescue operation of the crew members could be safer and more efficient. Although the testresults were statisfying the parachute never made it to real use. The NASA cancelled the Apollo flights. This ment the end of the research for the NASA Parawing project as well.

Jumping with NPW
There was also an attempt for commercial use. The parachute was produced for parajumping under the name Eagle. But after several incidents with severe injuires, the use of the parachute for jumping purposes ended quietly. Today parapente pilots use a "Dactyl" as a rescue vehicle. The basis for this chute is taken from the NPW model 2.

After a period of almost twenty years we discovered the original NASA drawings. From the first contact with these reports we fell in love with the concepts and imagined that it would be great to transform the parawing to a kite. So we started to develop a bridle system for the use as a kite. In 1993 the concept was worked out completely.

During succesfull testflying the kite we discovered the potential of the kite as power engine and we decided to register the concept worldwide at the intellectual property registration database of WIPO/OMPI, Geneva as a kite. Since we build a kite and not a parachute we were validated to do so. Up onto today we are producing NPW5 as well as NPW9 models in various sizes.

Explaining the name
We still use the acronime NPW pointing to the original planform test. NPW stands for NASA ParaWing. The "5" indicates the original planform we used for our concept. There were 9 models tested at NASA. We also tried the other planforms as a kite but model 5 was suited best for kite purpose with minimal effort in production. With the concept we started a revolution in the kite industries since there was no such simple, sparless chamberless concept.

Nowerdays there are more commercial stuntkites using the same aerodynamic concept. The "preliminary" reports can be found at the LARC database on the NASA website.

What will the future bring
We believe that the concept of single skin, spareless kites is only just beginning. We unraffled the secrets of the construction of the known NPWs and are working on better and more multipurpose designs. Additionally we are developing "hardware" like mountainboards as well.

In this section we will keep you informed whenever there are new developments to share with you. Meanwhile have fun flying your NPW!
