JIBE 2011

acampbell - 5-6-2010 at 07:16 AM

Looking at Dates for 2011.

Next May is weird but might work well. As you might know, there is a week where there is low tide in the afternoon and then the next has high tide late in the day. In May 2011, both weeks with low tide in the afternoon has the lowest tide very late in the afternoon.

Wednesday the 18th has low tide at 4pm and Saturday the 21st has it at 6:30pm. And these are big spring tides with big beaches. This could work well, as we noted that the winds came up later anyway and the beach clears of toddlers later in the day. We can ride till sun-down and not be a threat to sea turtles. Less chance of being baked and burned, too.

I say we bag the Friday night Dinner and maybe do a lunch one day at high tide. Easier logistics, too.

With clear beaches late in the afternoon, Shipwreck Runs will be the theme and I see a special T-shirt for this "I made it to the ship wreck..."

This also leaves another favorable weekend with good late tides early in the month for another certain event up north without double booking.

Whadda y'all think?

frankiter - 5-6-2010 at 01:15 PM

At one point last month I had to pick my way through a slalom course of beach blankets and innocent bystanders - pretty nerve wracking for a newbie on a PL BF with a 7m Blurr attached! So any plan that gives low tide, high wind, toddler free shipwreck runs is alright by me. Love the idea of the trophy t-shirt.

mougl - 5-6-2010 at 02:12 PM

sounds awesome to me! the bigger the beach, the better :)

tridude - 5-6-2010 at 03:49 PM

you have the local knowledge....................sounds good to me...................loved that surf and turf session last month.........:lol::duh::duh:

pokitetrash - 9-6-2010 at 12:23 PM

Yea, I loved the ship wreck! Riding the Blokart, I followed some hot chicks in bikini's around the corner and they were calling out that it looked fun and really cool, and I even got one "Heeeyyyyyyyy!!".

What I didn't realize was that I was running on apparent wind once I rounded the corner at high speed, and as I made my really cool- showing off -drifting turn around, came to a dead stop and then had to Flintstone style back to the corner to get the wind back! Lost all sorts of cool points for sure!

mougl - 9-6-2010 at 12:27 PM

It was the sissy beer...

pokitetrash - 9-6-2010 at 01:40 PM

You were my Blue Moon wingman if I remember right Mougl!"

mougl - 9-6-2010 at 02:31 PM

Indeed I was! Goes great with seafood!

You are still sissy #1 as you ordered it first....

Taper123 - 28-6-2010 at 04:34 PM

Jekyll was a nice beach to bug... I know I went past the wreck several times. No idea about next year, but I can guarantee where I'll be for Thanksgiving :) -> (Dead Bird Buggy Bash)<-

Well let's review your coolness score:

-1 for thinking you're all that
-2 for the walk of shame
+5 for doing the walk of shame in the Blokart instead of the buggy.

Your overall score is +2. I don't see a problem here. :-)

deanaoxo - 28-6-2010 at 07:57 PM

Make it so captain!

We went down to the shipwreck on sat and staid there. In the afternoon, things had cleared up and we could do the whole run.

Stayed away from people the whole time.

I love Jibe and can't wait to do it some more!

aoxomoxoa for sure~!

acampbell - 29-6-2010 at 02:07 PM

I can even look at the possibility of staging JIBE on the south end for Saturday. There is good parking at the Soccer complex / 4-H Club and that is right where the beach starts to bend around and turn south, then SW towards the Shipwreck and yeah, it is wide open down there. Problem is beach access. There is one very looong ramp over the dunes to get to the beach, but with less public traffic there, it might be do-able. It does involve stairs, though.

Direct foot access to the shipwreck is a non-starter. There is limited parking and the public right of way is a 1/3 mile path over marsh with rickety / rotting wood ramps. Not good with a buggy.

For weekdays, we will keep the staging area in front of Blackbeards, as it is not so crowded then and we will be there later in the day. We will also have the handicap ramp open a few hundred feet to the south then too; suitable for bigger buggies.

Hardrock - 30-6-2010 at 07:15 AM

Blackbeards is a cool area. Not many folks hanging out there at low tide, no water or knee deep around the bar.

I can't wait to get back down there. Thats a perfect place to learn to get up on a board. I think Dana and I will be visiting again
before this year is over.

Have the restrooms been completed?

PHREERIDER - 30-6-2010 at 07:56 AM

ALL for the crowdless south end. a step in the better passive safety direction.

AND the HAMPTON INN there IS the freshest spot. big shaded park right beside as well. parking and access def limiting factor.

it will def make it a more private affair, maybe clothing optional too, yeah?

Come down anytime. The new park and restrooms are not done yet but is close (It's a state project so don't let expectations get too high).

The wooden open pavilion deck with handicap ramp to the beach is done, as are the picnic shelters. Curbs are poured and drainage is in so they just have to pour the asphalt for the parking lot. Bathrooms are being finished out now, so I bet it is done in July, only a month late. It will be nice.

mougl - 30-6-2010 at 08:43 PM

I need to try to get back before the event tour next year. Haven't been able to get that kind of riding since the event!

Hardrock - 1-7-2010 at 12:10 AM

Phree, I'm not to sure about the optional clothing deal.

But I can send you one of my home made DVD's. Rocky's Home Alone 2nd edition,, in HD and blue ray!

Hardrock - 11-5-2011 at 11:44 AM

I started packing yesterday. I figure not waiting until the last minute. LOL

The 5 kites are going to use up a bunch of room. Gota have em tho, land board, Proof, buggy, and all the other little things.

I might be letting the P-15 go home with someone else.

Its such a perfect thing of beauty I have only looked at pictures of it. I hate to see such a classic perfect kite unfolded and laying on the ground so I never have. :D:D

My little fields arn't worthy of it.

tridude - 11-5-2011 at 11:56 AM

Rock,

Hate to see you let her go but it will sell no problem...................fly her on the beach and you may change your mind.......of course you can leave her with me as incentive to come to Charleston more often.................

Isn't Mougl looking for a Phantom 15?

tridude - 11-5-2011 at 12:30 PM

yes I think so........................cough cough clearing throat @ Mougl......nice catch Mr T:lol::lol:

acampbell - 11-5-2011 at 03:23 PM

This afternoon was ESE at 12-16. dead on.

mougl - 11-5-2011 at 03:29 PM

I was indeed! Don't know if I can swing it now though, spent a LOT on the quiver rebuild so far. Lord knows I'm goin to try though, also have to start building up the FB collection. Going to want something along the lines of an RII or Viper set

pbc - 11-5-2011 at 06:20 PM

On the matter of kites going home with other folks, I might like to go home with a 3m or 5m Apex. I at least want to try them.

If do find love with a small HQ kite I'll need to move a large Arc--probably a 16m Scorpion. I need to have the Big Arc Showdown, but I think there is just too much overlap between the 15m Phantom and 16m Scorpion to warrant keeping both.

Philip

Hardrock - 11-5-2011 at 06:38 PM

I know what you mean on the overlap.

I have the 13, 15 and 19. Thats were I wanted to be but years into the hobby I still haven't found the right place to fly the arc's.

The little crapy field we go to isn't arc friendly. Thens there's gust and lulls. Been keeping the P-15 new just to try and recoup my funds if need be.

Tri, gas prices keeping me off the coast, well that and the way we both work always changing shift's and over time without notice.
In the end , the smaller kites get the call. Until JIBE then woohooo.

pbc - 11-5-2011 at 07:39 PM

I have found my Arcs do well inland, but some aspects of the arc-y wonder are compromised. They still munch gusts and there are more to munch so that's some arcy goodness.

OTOH, auto-zenith becomes useless due to the non-smooth wind. The kite will routinely overrun zenith inland. Where-as I can tether my Scorps for an hour in the coastal on-shore breezes, I can barely let go long enough to take a drink of water from a screw top jug when inland.

So yes compromised, but perhaps still worthwhile.

Philip

frankiter - 11-5-2011 at 08:17 PM

Philip, You can't go home with my new to me ApexII 5m, but you're more than welcome to fly it.

mougl - 11-5-2011 at 08:24 PM

Frank...

Nice big hole in the quiver there...might be able to fill it at JIBE :)

Drewculous - 11-5-2011 at 08:27 PM

My new apex 3 5m is going to be there, you're welcome to try it too, its a riot in crazy winds!!

mougl - 12-5-2011 at 07:11 AM

Less than a week to go!!! Going to be scouting rental properties while I'm there, possibly scouting jobs too!

Chad - 12-5-2011 at 07:29 AM

mougl,

Have a Viper 5.3 Black/ Orange going with me to JIBE for sale. RTF used only a few times and crispy!
Look me up if you want to try it out..

Chad

tridude - 12-5-2011 at 07:42 AM

12 May, 1040 local, SSE @ 12mph (side on), muy perfecto senors y senoras............damn he's been to the beach and hit the switch already!!!!:lol::duh::duh:

acampbell - 12-5-2011 at 08:05 AM

not as side on as you think. You can milk that for a shipwreck run, the reach around the southern corner would be a scream, and the trip back would be monster downwinder

tridude - 12-5-2011 at 08:11 AM

def a screamin downwinder back to kite beach.......................my point exactly no problems with this direction,,,,,,,,,,,

Oh yes! Much like we experienced last year. A little slow on the way south, epic at the south end and the run back to the LZ. So very worth the trip south into the wind.

Philip

Hardrock - 13-5-2011 at 01:10 AM

Mougl, don't forget your GPS,you had a pretty fast run last year.

It will b good to finally meet the pepper king, Drew. LOL

Is it me or do I need to try another kite?

I kind of think its ALL ME. and to be honest, I'm a tad bit scared of kites and wheels.

But there is courage in the bottom of them cans I'm bringing.

Rocky...feel free to try my Montana in the bug. It's got a nice steady build up, very manageable, and it's a nice park and ride when you want it. Don't get me wrong, when you want it to she will light right up! Set my personal best with the same model kite.

shehatesmyhobbies - 14-5-2011 at 05:37 PM

Rocky, I think you need a bigger buggy! Something low and wide! Then you could throw the 19 up when ever you want!

Montana is a sweet kite as well!

Dittos on the 9.5 Montana. I set my beach pb with it at Jibe a few years back. It will reach up front and get you upwind and then scream back downwind happy as can be.

Been doing some re packing today,,, uggggg.

Bought this cargo carrier, bought and put on a hitch but now my daughter isn't going so I'm thinking I can take all that off. Well not the hitch but the carrier, put the stuff in the car.

Dana isn't home from work for a couple hours so better leave it be. Don't want to crowd the baby in the back seat.

Hardrock - 15-5-2011 at 03:35 PM

Ok back to normal now. The baby still has his little spot on the back seat.

Hey, when is the kite fort arriving?
