Buggy Tow as a tandem setup?


I want to make a general/universal tandem setup for my Libre Full Race to a Peter Lynn suspension buggy.

I searched and found good information. But, most are 2-4 yrs old. Links are dead and pictures are as well.

Have any of you made a tandem adapter? What worked and what did not work? Do you have any good pictures?

Here are some pictures of my tandem attachment. Between my PTW playa and my flexifoil Navarro. It works good, follows well. My only complaint is that it rattles and clunks while riding around. I have thought about going to a small universal joint but have not because of cost vs necessity.

i often use the simple pipe and strap that I can throw in a kite bag. The upside is simple and small enough to throw in a bag. downside is having to remove the front wheel to use it (for me not a big deal as I often bring the tandem buggy without front wheel on and strap assembly ready to go on it.

The pipe is a basically a wide axle spacer - same dia. tube used as the spacers that sit either side of the front wheel on the axle bolt. When the wheel is removed the pipe slides onto the axle in it's place. It is the same width as the hub so you still have a spacer - centre pipe assembly - spacer. You could make the pipe wide enough to account for the width of both spacers and the width of hub so you would only need the long pipe - but don't loose your spacers if you toss them somewhere.
The pipe has a U shaped wire welded in the center. Then you use a length of webbing roughly 4 feet long with a buckle (male and female parts at each end). Larks head middle of webbing onto the U shape wire on the pipe.
So with wheel removed, reassemble front fork and axle bolt with this pipe/strap piece sitting in place of the wheel. Bring front fork up to rear axle of front buggy so it butts up to the centre of the axle. Wrap one half of the long webbing around the back axle from the top down and the other the opposite direction. wrap around multiple times and fasten buckle and pull webbing tight on buckle.
With different tandem attachments you'll have to become aware of your turning radius. The pipe and strap has the rear buggy the closest and then other attachment methods put the rear buggy a little further back. I have the wider axle on my front buggy so I just need to be careful not to do a super tight turn to pinch (jackknife) the two buggies.
**Important safety note: make sure passenger does take their feet off the footpegs and put them on the ground until you stop and say it's ok. I have seen a few times people putting feet down only to have the pilot power the kite and the passengers feet get dragged back trapped under the seat as the buggies lurch forward.

Great pics and great ideas!

I would like to stay away from the welding method since I have not yet committed to buying a welder since I would probably "try" to weld my fingers together in an attempt to be a faster swimmer (i.e. I do stupid stuff).

I was looking again at the SOLIVER method and thought that I might be able to build something very similar out of wood that is bolted together. Same concept but no welding.

I also have quite a few trailers that I have made out of "Baby Joggers" that I could break apart to create a tandem connector.

Hopefully this doesn't duplicate...as I had a post issue.
Made some strap tandem setups recently.
Pictured fork is in front of axle, but can be mounted either way

Just working my way into this genre of the sport. I like simple, as most and usually see folks carrying line for lashing 2 together.
But after fiddling with the item made. It is nice just sliding the axle bolt in and rolling off. 1 good session without a rider, but carried all my gear through the day just fine.
Looking forward to some real wear and tare time.

I had to stare at the picture for a while to understand what it was.

I think this is the standard Peter Lynn tandem strap that requires removal of the front wheel and no bag behind the pilot rider. Do I have this correct?

I am specifically looking for a way to connect the second buggy without removing the wheel.

For me is this not a tandem setup but a buggy tow setup.
The setup we mostly use here is that the buggy being towed has its front (steering) wheel removed and is linked with a 360 degree joint directly to the rear axle of the buggy that is in front.

This is my LibreLynnDem tandem v1.0 (Libre + Peter Lynn + Tandem) attachment system. Name kinda rolls off the tongue, eh?

Since I do not have the Peter Lynn buggy yet, I built this tandem connection to be adjustable in all ways. The neck can be longer/shorter. The wheel width can be narrow/wider. The axle connection can be longer/shorter. Once I have the buggy I will go to v2.0 which will be more robust. This version is a proof of concept that has to entertain the wife on an upcoming buggy trip.

I am working on a few improvements that will make it more robust. But, I will be trying this version in a few weeks and then v2.0 will be constructed.
- Use of four 8020 "T" instead of corner brackets.
- Replace all nuts with lock nuts.
- Create a new axle connector that is EXACTLY 12mm to reduce slack. Possibly make one end 12mm and the other 15mm for new/old PL buggies.
- Use newer 8020 so it looks snazy instead of used.
- Reduce the weight.
