My clan had a great time this year and have now deposited ourselves on Saint Simons Island for the coming week. ... I'm sure there will be a sunset session or 2 on East Beach with Jim while I'm here and anyone who's still on JI is welcome to join in!

As always, many thanks to Angus and I hope to see you all next year!

Each wheel had at least one bearing I couldn't turn with my fingers. Front wheel is back like new now. Back wheels have a different size and they come in this week. I'll double check before JIBE next year!

Well said my friend! "A single rose can be your garden, a single friend your world" and that is truth. Ted, you were literally my savior in helping me with a bridal discombobulation that defied my meager mind. Having you there at the right time, right on time, more than once, was the icing on an epic cake called JIBE 2019! I'll converse with powers that be of both organized religions and long established philosophical ideas to be able to relive those 4 amazing days. And Ted, if I may indeed wax sentimental, this is for you...

Ted, the bride is off limits regardless of your saint-like intervention. She's much too demure. Thanks for helping with my bridle though :)

Had an outstanding time riding Saint Simons Island today!... The winds were light and there was a small to fair crowd on the beach, but there was plenty of room to ride. I started out with the a 4m NASA Star 2 and cruised around the island south to north. I forgot how easy it is to cruise with the NASAs ... then I put up the 6m Peak and went from the 6th st access near where my in laws are staying all the way almost to Gould's inlet on the north end several times and even did some speed runs across East Beach. Great times!

Here are a couple of the "eclectic" kites I used at Jekyll. The first one is my 4M round flex kite. I feel like it has a better window than an NPW and is pretty easy to fly "single handed". At about 24 seconds in I do a tack - something I've only been able to do with this design. It takes a while to get up to speed - it thrives on apparent wind. I covered 28 miles on Wed mostly single handed with this kite with a top speed just below 20 mph - no super fast but it is a pretty small kite after all. I'm thinking of making a 6M version next.

Next is my version of a 5 M NPW 21 - but with a flexible spar in the LE. Has most the advantages of a usual NPW, but the idea was to improve the window by using a spar. It certainly stop nose collapse - but hard to say about the window. This video isn't very good - my camera seems to have a tough time with the lighting at the beach but hey - it's not very long. Still you can get the idea.

I found the umbrella kite to be one of your most interesting creations. It is a deceptively spare design that was doing a great job moving you down the beach. How is it when used with janky inland wind, or longer lines?

Thanks Ted,

Everything works better at Jekyll for sure, but I've been pretty happy with these kites at home in the winds that are let's less than Jekyll good.

There is a lot of discussion of this set of kites in the thread of Paraski Flex so I'll link that thread. http://www.powerkiteforum.com/viewthread.php?tid=35565

The short version is that the 8.5 M Paraski Flex works pretty well for me at my fairgrounds spot, but was really big and not exactly a light wind kite. I wanted to come up with something I could ride with at my lake spot so I made a 3M version that worked pretty well. Once I understood how it worked I decided the Paraski shape (elliptical or a parabola) and 25 some bridles were too complicated so I made one that was just a half circle and a lot less bridles. The original 1.6 M prototype flew well on a 4 line bar with long lines as well as the single handed bar. Video below shows that kite.

https://vimeo.com/309780824

So next I built a 4 m proto and used it a lot at the lake. Tried it at the fairgrounds once and it worked ok, but takes a more power on grass than pavement. So I haven't really tried much there.

Gusts are not much of a problem with this kite - lulls are the problem because you lose steering control if the kite is not powered up. The resulted in the kite taking a beating when I drug the leading edge across the ground. As a result, sometimes I fly it with 4 line handles and that gives a lot better control and keep the kite from dragging the ground. But when the wind is pretty strong or steady the single handed bar works fine, and its easier to tack with that than handles.

The one I used that the beach was the latest version with stronger leading edge material and cascade bridles. I was really happy with the way it worked out - hooked to a buggy it is sort of the thrift store version of the Land Yacht. :D

Thrift store perhaps, but it was doing a good job for you!
Keep up the interesting experimentation, I love the variety of forms that you come up with.

Thanks. I was thinking it wouldn't be too hard to get some black fabric and make one that actually looks like an umbrella. Well at least half an umbrella.......;)
