First Timer at WBB

Finally got a couple of days off and planning to make it to the fall wbb, getting there on Thursday and departing on Sunday.
Still trying to figure out when i travel on Thursday (morning or afternoon) and was wandering how the tides affect the riding. How many hours before and after low tide is the beach rideable, because I will try to time the travel based on that, so maybe i get some buggy time on Thursday too.
Also, a couple of other questions:
Is it better to call the hotel and let them know i will be there for the wbb or should i just book online?
I already got into NAPKA and received my pilot number. I cant find any post talking about whether napka numbers need to be attached to the buggy at all times. If im not planning to race do i still need to get signs made and attached/displayed on the buggy?
What do you guys do for storing the buggies over night? Does the hotel have a secure place or should i plan to take the buggy apart and store it in the car overnight.
Since the wife and kids decided to take the trip too, is there much around the area for them to do or should i schedule day trips for them to other nearby areas.

Thanks Jeff. She is good sport as long as I don't push her to join me on the crazy hobbies that I continuously pick up. Hence the need to find something for her and the kids to do.

I would call the hotel. They will be able to recommend the best room for you. Most of the guys get rooms towards the deck area.
All the buggies get stored outside under the deck over night. I don't think it has been and issue yet, but ultimately you are responsible for your own gear. Some people use bike locks to secure them to the fence.
If you can, mount your number plates to the buggy. It makes it easier to know who you are, but it hasn't really been enforced. Everyone cares more about your safety.....so wear your helmet.

Please dig around the forum as there are some really nice threads about WBB preparation and what to expect.

I've been to 2 WBB's now and am planning on attending again this fall. I also may try to convince my wife to join me on this trip as well.

I'm sure the more experienced guys will have some more information for you.

Looks like most of the questions have been answered. Tides are not exactly the best, but the b act is very flat so usually plenty of hard pack 2 or 3 hours either side of the tide. Some like it this way, some don't care either way, they just want to be there no matter what the tide is. The rest of the beach is usually pretty easy to ride as well, well as long as they stop grooming it soon enough anyway.

Glad to have you there, next year you will be just like the rest of us, counting down the days till its here again.

Feel free to call me with any other concerns or difficulties. A full page of info will be coming out this weekend so make sure you check it out.

As for things for the wife and kids, yes, there is plenty to do. Some close by some a 20 minute drive. The pier may be open on the weekend with amusements and stuff, depends on what else is on the community schedule for the weekend. Maria (owner of the Shalimar), knows all the ins and outs, where to go's, where not to go's. You and your family can talk to her at the hotel, she will treat you like family just as she does all of us.

We try to enforce the number plates as much as possible, I can't hit people over the head with a stick about it, but I do say something to them if they don't have them on, of course I always get the yeah I'll put them on in a bit deal. Hey what can I say, we do our best. As stated above, safety is my biggest priority. Helmets are a must!, have an accident without it and poof, there goes the insurance. We haven't had any issues with our buggies, I've been going since 09 and the event has been going on for much longer.

One thing is for certain, you will have a blast, if you drink, you will drink, if you like to talk, there's a ton of that, and if you like fun, you are going to have it.

Thank you guys. All very helpful responses.
Safety is not a problem because i am convinced my little ones still need daddy for a few more years. Motorcycle helmet, gloves, and boots always go on. Sometimes plastic courage is added to the upper body too.

Ok folks, if you haven't done so already, time to book your rooms. They want to get a good count for rooms as the 50's weekend is also in town and they want to make sure we get our rooms first. Unhook the sled and get it done. Just over a month away my friends!

This is a NAPKA event, $30 membership fee to become a NAPKA member. Only necessary so we can have required insurance for the event.
I promise you won't be disappointed! Any further questions, please ask.

When you call the Shalimar, just mention that you're with the Buggy Bash, or the kite flying guys, and they'll charge accordingly. I think our rate is $75/night for the first two nights and $65 for additional nights.
See you there!

If everyone could handle their napka stuff before they get to WBB that would be awesome. I can handle it there but would prefer to kite and buggy with everyone else! ;)

Welcome aboard, start saving for next years events, you will return! Bring clothes for warm and cold weather. It will be chilly in the morning and usually gets a decent warm during midday and then turns chilly again. If the wind doesn't blow, which it will, you will still have a good time. If you drink beer, bring something from your favorite brewery, many of us do and we all share. Plenty of places to buy anything you might need.

Can't wait to meet you, when you get there, we will make you feel at home.

Bump!
16 days to go! :wee:

The extended weather forecast is looking great. If you're not booked yet, get in touch with the Shalimar and let them know that you're coming. (Hotel and campground info is above.)

If you're planning on being mobile (in a buggy or on a board), please make sure that your NAPKA membership is current (no need to if you're only flying static).
