Determinations on JIBE 2018?

Hey gang, has any determination been made for dates on 2018?

Since we usually rent on both JI and SSI, knowing the dates before we leave is super helpful to secure places for next year... my Father in law asked :D

Ha!! Man I was just getting ready to ask this same question. Was wondering if Ted or Angus has scoped next year's tide schedule.

Just hunted for the tide tables for Saint Simons Island East Beach for May 2018 and found the optimal JIBE tides are the 3rd week of May 2018 (Mon 5/14- Fri 5/18)

You can see low tides start the week around 2:30 and end the week around 6:00 ... does this look like a reasonable estimate?

The tides are not with us that great on any of the weeks, but your choice gives the most potential hours late that are likely
to have wind.

Yes we saw that too today. We talked to our property manager at Jekyll and have this window reserved until firm confirmation.

The last week in April would be the best from the point of having other beach users. The Tides are also better. As we get
later in the spring there is heavier traffic on the sand, and more school children.

sorry to be late to this. I was busy riding on JI Wednesday - dead on-shore ;-)

Yeah, Ted showed me this data early on last week. Kind of getting close to Memorial Day, but I'm having to agree.

So I'm going to write to the JIA about May 14-18, 2018. Should be no problem.

Thanks everybody for looking at this.

I've just written to my contact at Jekyll Island Authority. Her auto-reply says that she's out until next Monday the 22nd, so we'll have to wait. But I do not anticipate a problem. We'll be bumping up against Mother's Day (the 13th) but that has no posed a real problem in the past (esp. since we have so many moms with us!). And this still puts a full week between us and Memorial Day weekend.

I'll post right away when I get the official word but in the mean-time I think it's safe to pencil in rental dates around event dates of Monday May 14 to Friday May 18, 2018

what would be the factors swaying the decision between the end of April vs later in May
I would guess part consideration for Wildwood? but it could work out better if someone wanted to do them back to back?
Sounds like April might have better wind and less people?

We are planning to be back next year and anytime is good.

I'm in for late April. Less People!
More & more beach goers are stacking up on Kite Beach. I believe it's the most popular beach on JI.
Look, for 10 years JIBE has had a good record of not hurting beach goers and a letter date reduces our odds because of the mass of sunbathers and tourists on the beach.

This year more fellows were going up to the water towers to buggy just to get away from the crowds. And a few went North to buggy. WHY??? No mass of flesh slathered in SPF 50!!!

With so much going on in May an earlier date would give people the opportunity to participate in more activities instead of having to make a decision which event they'd have to drop because of close over laps.

As to WBB and back to back events, Rich tells me the wind is best in the spring up there. Great big beach and no people! I'd like to do a 2-fer.

Looking at the St. Simons light, the tides don't work for the afternoon developing sea breezes in late April??
April 23 Monday Lowtide is 9:24am.
April 30 Monday Lowtide is 3:41 pm.

Looks like that would be a little too early or a little too late when the wind switches in the afternoons?

I just checked and Jason is right... the tides are too early in the day the last week of April.

Same site, plotting tides for the week of 4/23/2018:

April makes it harder for my return to JIBE. I will have just taken a week off for IBX and that will be a quick turnaround. But I'm only one guy my situation is probably unique.

We have the Green light from JIA for May 14-18. Turtle Crawl is the weekend prior and ends Sunday the 13th.

No, there are really not less people in late April. As mentioned the tides are not good for that week. And sea breezes are typically just hatching then.

By mid-May, the sea breezes are more consistently developing in the afternoons. They are very consistent right now.

It's after Memorial day that the crowds are a problem.

Sorry if some can't make May, but there appear to be conflicts either way.

Mid may it is, OK. How can you say no to good winds, good tide times and less people?

This year was so loaded up toward the end of the week. Turtle Craw, 5k,10k, triathlon and other events just seemed crowded to me. I know that we were fenced out of our adopted area and shelter for those events. I guess that turtles on JI are more important than kite buggys.

One question I have is this, The race people had 10 RV's parked in the parking lots for 4 days and nights up toward the convention center.
All their equipment was set up and chained up, electric cable was run for the A/C on the porta john and so on.
What goes?? We can't park a security vehicle and leave out equipment on the grass like we used to but they can?

All I ask is if it's good for the goose is should be good for the gander. Equal and fair. Why should we be pushed around? We have an economic foot print. We're an attraction to the visitors. We paint the sky with color and give the beach goers a show, something that excites them.Something for them to talk about. After all we all will talk about our sport to them if asked.

10 years of successful events bringing people to this island should have some weight with the JIA. I feel like we're slowly getting phased out of beach use.
