4 riders and 2500 km across the Sahara Desert

www.madwaysouth.com

Peter Lynn is supplying the kites and my Reactor 10.8 is going along for the ride.

My ass hurts just thinking about the amount of travel these guys are going to do!!

BeamerBob - 30-6-2009 at 08:02 AM

I'm thinking about how much my downwind leg would hurt after 2500 miles in the buggy. Showers, bed? I guess they have some hospitable places to stay from time to time but there will be many nights under the stars on a trip like this I imagine.

All I can do is wish them luck.

As some of you are aware two Australians and two New Zealanders have embarked on a 2500km race across the Sahara Desert. Dubbed the 'Mad Way South', the challenge will see adventures Craig Hansen, Steve Gurney, Geoff Wilson and Garth Freeman attempt to cross the Sahara Desert in modified Peter Lynn buggies using wind power alone. To make things interesting the boys have received identical kites ( Peter Lynn Reactors, Cores and Synergies ) and will race in two teams ( Aussies v Kiwis ) across some of the most hostile terrain in the world.

The adventure is to help raise funds for the 'She Rescue Home' in Cambodia. The boy have set a target of raising $100,000 so if people would like to find more information about the charity or how to make donations then you can go to http://www.madwaysouth.com/index.ews

There is a Mad way south web page: http://www.madwaysouth.com/index.ews where you can learn more about the trip and the reasons behind it or you can go to http://share.findmespot.com/shared/faces/viewspots.jsp?glId=... to view regular updates on the boys progress.

I wanna go!!!

f0rgiv3n - 6-8-2009 at 09:32 AM

I'd rig up a jimmy-rigged cruise control on a long trip like that :D. some sort of rod that holds the front wheel in place so my legs could rest and a hook on the buggy that i could put the kite onto?? lol, that'd be sweet :D

acampbell - 6-8-2009 at 02:00 PM

I sure hope the trip is more exciting than that YoutTube video

tobytobsen - 21-8-2009 at 06:48 AM

Man, I read some of their posts and started reading some wiki articles about that reagion. I did not know that there is this great Wall, and that Western Sahara was a battlefield for 16 years! I hope they won't run into a mine on accident.

ragden - 21-8-2009 at 06:57 AM

Thats insane. Though highly entertaining in concept. Hope the trip goes well and they have fun doing it.

edit: that is a sweet lookin buggy :)

acampbell - 21-8-2009 at 07:18 AM

Sounds like the Buggies are getting pretty beat-up, but I am surprised that they had not anticipated this. I'll bet Sand Yeti has a wistful smile on his face. I had not thought of land mines, though. sheesh.

My 10.8m Reactor has apparently been written off, as the good folks at PL are sending me an RII version as a replacement

Kamikuza - 21-8-2009 at 07:28 AM

Sounds awesome! Tough ride though ...
Steve Gurney huh? The Coast-to-Coast Steve Gurney?

Written off? Ouch... At least you are getting a replacement. :)

Kamikuza - 21-8-2009 at 07:37 AM

From the video Lad posted ... answered my own question - yes that's him :) and he mentioned Brighton Beach - my home town! :wee:  Burdlings Flat too!

USA_Eli_A - 21-8-2009 at 08:40 AM

I've done about a half day on the Sahara, talk about sweetness, just stay on the high side of the windward dunes and all will go well, Find yourself on the lee-side of a 160ft tall dune AND YOU'RE WALKING. Not to mention on the Lee-side the sand is knee deep,

I'd also get those knobby tires off that buggy, and get some reduced smoothies.

unfortunately I was on a PL Classic Bigfoot from 1995 when we hit the Sahara

Marijn eluded to a "big surprise" heading across the Atlantic to Angus. Angus had already done the happy dance from getting his wish for an upgrade.

acampbell - 21-8-2009 at 01:31 PM

It left The Hague today...:wee:

Will review for sure right away. Unless Rip has one it will be the first in N. America
