New Station at Kite Beach, Jekyll Island, GA

So I go out to Jekyll yesterday after low tide and am standing in the parking lot trying to decide if it's even worth hauling the buggy off the kitemobile and down to the beach. I'm looking around at the treetops and the bushes then I see something that just about made me jump.

There, right near the southeast corner of Blackbeard's parking lot, perched right above the dunes in unobstructed air is a complete solar powered wireless weather station. It's on a 32' obilisk -OK, conctrete phone pole.

Last September, local Kiteboard Instructor Robb VanWie had contacted WeatherFlow, a weather data company, and asked about getting a sensor on Jekyll. His timing was perfect because they were looking for sensor location in the area for their hurricane network and asked him for placement suggestions. Said their chief meteorologist...

"I want to multipurpose where I can. This station
would be primarily for hurricane research but why not put it where windsurfers and kiters can get the most benefit out of it?"

So here we are. We are going to contact them tomorrow to see about getting data from it.

Robb and I will build an altar in front of it shortly.

LOL. Jekyll Island just gets better and better. Live video stream would make me completely useless at work. I could sit there and watch Angus ride back and forth smiling at the camera.

That wasn't cheap. I guess you can't scrimp when you are intentionally putting something in front of a hurricane though and want it to be there afterwards.

sounds like you guys have a great kiting area down there--one of these days i'll have to get down there and meet you fellows --you can give me some tips:singing:

The tips flow all directions. I learn something every time I get together with fellow kiters.

Can't wait for the feed from that station! That way we landlubbers can sit and watch, and be jealous!

Credit goes to local PASA Kiteboard instructor Robb VanWie, who made the initial contact with the weather company. Thanks also to the Jekyll Island Authority for giving them the nod.

I do not know if there is a video feed, since I cannot see a camera from the ground, but we will hopefully find out more soon.

The weather company might allow JIA to install a camera as a partnership gesture. JIA would benefit from the feed as a marketing tool. That requires lots of people working together but JIA seems above the rest when it comes to doing a good job with their resource.

data for the Jekyll Island wind sensor are available on iKitesurf.com in real time for free...

No video, but there is a live web cam at the nearby golf course so you can gauge the sky conditions...
