No Permit for Ivanpah, NOW WHAT !

Bladerunner - 27-2-2009 at 03:14 PM

I have been asking for a permit for Ivanpah for a month now. I was told it would be no problem and it would come via email.

It never came and I have been trying to contact them all week with NO response. ODD because they were so helpfull at 1st ?

NOW WHAT do I do ? I leave tomorrow morning.

What lakes do and don't require permits around Primm ???

Curiosity's killing me - what's the permit all about and why do you need one?

Thank goodness Rip' has been around the block and has my back.
I was aware that some kind of permit was required for NABX last year . I am registered for this year. I had sort of assumed I was covered. He asked me if I had a permit for this trip and when I said no he hooked me up with a great guy from the Dept. He passed me to Lady in charge who was quick to reply and assured me things would happen in good time. ( There had been rain on the lake back then ) I didn't want to bug them and left it until this past Mon. No reply at all :ticking:

I don't know what lakes require a permit? I have all the ones on the NABX site downloaded and HOPE I can ride on the rest ?????????????????

I DO KNOW it's important I never get banned from Ivanpah. So I'll ride Roach I guess ?

Life happens! Maybe I'm supposed to go explore these other dry lakes ?

Flying to and from Vegas.

If you are attending NABX, you will fall under the NABX permit and will not need anything.

Ivanpah is not a public area, it is restricted to wind powered vehicles only (awesome huh...) If you are going to use Ivanpah any other time besides NABX then you need to secure a permit. The permit will come in the regular mail, not e-mail and is only obtainable through the Needles BLM office.

Only one person in your group would need to have a permit, if you all have permits even better. If you are going with someone else then you will be covered under their permit.

The BLM office is a very busy office and because of the California budget, it is usually minimally staffed. The people at the office are some of the kindest people around but they do get swamped so please be courteous with them at all times and expect/understand that sometimes things can take a while to get done. We should be grateful for them allowing us to have this (somewhat) personal/private area where we are welcome to do what we all love to do, unlike other area who are facing bans or are limiting access.

I am sure there will be other buggiers there that would be happy to allow you to fall under their permit. Please understand the restrictions of the lake bed and under every circumstance, OBEY THE RULES!

You should be good to go. If for any reason you can't use the lake bed (nobody with you or it happens to be wet) you can always use Roach which is on the north side of Buffalo Bills (about a mile north) or even the Jean dry lake bed which is half way from Vegas to Primm on the east side of I-15. You will see both of those on your way to Primm. Both of those lakebeds are un-restricted and you have full public access, permits are not needed.

If you get to Primm, head out on Ivanpah (unless there is a rope across the entrance, then it is closed). Head out on the playa and if you see someone else there, let them know that you have not yet received your permit and ask if you can fall under their permit. You should be good to go without any issues. I am not going to be out this weekend, Nascar is in town and I will be on turn 4 in the infield partying it up with my Bro. Next weekend I plan on being out the full weekend though.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Kent,

Yes, I found the people at the BLM very friendly. Just like you explained I expected things have changed in some way ( swamped ) since we communicated back at the begining of the month. Due to my being out of country they said a printed pdf copy would suffice.

I hope to meet up with Dustin ( and You ? ) on Sunday . I have No Intention to go on Ivanpah without proper permit in my own name or as a guest. NABX is too important to me to take any chances. If I'm lucky it still may come on Monday or Tuesday ?

The more I think about it the more hitting Jean , Roach, Superior and Elmers, looks like a good twist of fate !
