I have a friend who has been trying to get me to visit their place in Palm Springs. I wasn't in to kiting when I visited last. I know it was always
windy north of town.
Can anyone tell me about places to kite around there ? I doubt I would travel with the buggy so hard pack or dry lake options are best for ATB or
Coyotes!lunchbox - 6-12-2008 at 02:59 PM
Hey Bladerunner,
I was in Palm Desert which is basically right next door to PS in July of last year. Brought my full range of kites 2.5 - 8.3 and a landboard. I was
with the family so I couldn't go far (i.e. had to settle for local parks) but just as well, the wind never got above 10mph.
Know if you can branch out or if you choose to go during another month, you might get lucky...that was just my experience.
BTW, when we were leaving Banning Pass was blowing...matter of fact, it always seems like it's blowing there...I think it was about 15-20mins outside
of Palm Desert.
Good luck and please report back if you find something....We do that trip every year and I would be stoked to find something kiteable close by.Bladerunner - 6-12-2008 at 05:32 PM
If I go , it will be the 1st week in March. I will have a car so expect I could drive almost as far as Victorville ? Of course the closer the better.
Unless it means meeting up with someone.
Another option was a 4-day package to Vegas in that same time period. Would my previous + recent registration to NABX allow me access to Ivanpah ?gilligan - 7-12-2008 at 09:55 AM
Victorville is a ways from Palm Springs, but if you get out that far El Mirage dry lake is only about 30 minutes west. Also Lucerne dry lake is east
of Victorville about 30 minutes as well. I've never buggied there but used to ride dirt bikes on it when I was a kid.

Thanks,
I suggested Victorville because I knew there are some spots up there. I was 1/2 hoping there was a dry lake or something in between.
It has been a while but I was expecting Victorville to be 4 hrs drive. Is that about right ?
I know I saw a spot that folks were off roading just on the right after you come off of I-10. North of P.S.. I had hopes it would work ?gilligan - 7-12-2008 at 07:02 PM
I think 2 hours max to Victorville... looks like hwy 247 to lucerne valley'd be less than an hour and a half.
Less than 3 to Elmers!Bladerunner - 8-12-2008 at 10:35 AM
Hmmmmm,
My actual goal here is to be someplace awsome to kite on my 50th Birthday. ( I say awsome so I seem young )
It would be nice to take these Friends up on the visit to P.S. but I'm starting to lean toward Vegas and Ivanpah ?
50 is the NEW 30 :wee:Jaymz - 9-12-2008 at 11:28 PM
Damn, never thought you were a day over 30. I feel young now at 44 and just getting into this addictive sport. Fly on.Bladerunner - 10-12-2008 at 10:17 AM
I have always looked WAY young for my age. It was a bit of a drag when I was young but now I couldn't be happier!
Start smoking dope in High School and stop your emotional growth right there. It worked for me :Plunchbox - 10-12-2008 at 12:07 PM

Palm Springs is nice but Vegas...now that would be a good way to celebrate the big 5-0!
...drinks by the pool...gambling....occasional look outside....whow...it's windy...shoot down to Ivanpah! Now that's the way I'd like to spend my
B-day!!!
