What do you guys do to get kiting access at sod farms? There's one not terribly far from me, but I haven't the slightest idea on how to approach the
owner. For that matter, I don't know how to find out who the owner is.

Hey Clint,
You just have to drive out there and ask for the manager and feed him a line like; you have a request (kind of a strange one) and would like to know
if you could fly kites on their farm... Or, You fly power kites and would like to know if you could possibly fly them on their fields, there is not
many places that have the room to fly them... Or start off like I' have a question and I'm unsure what to expect but I'd like to fly kites on your
fields if it would be OK... mostly expect a no and that way it will always be at least what you expected... a yes will be good surprise... you could
also use other farms that other kiters use and tell them that this field allows us to fly kites on their farm and that their farm is much closer to
you and would be grateful if you could use theirs...
Maybe some others here could come up with good opening lines too...
Maybe take a friend with to ask... If they allow you to, try to start slow with small kites nothing too daring...
Try and get their/managers info so you can email/call and tell them you'd like to come out again and if there is any field they would like you to use
or steer clear of...
Maybe take them a big bag of Jerky, case of Gatorade or a fruit basket once in a while because you guys are the ones benefiting and you have to show
appreciation... even a buy them lunch once a year... once you get to fly on their field you will want to give them the world because its like
Disneyland for kiters...
After a couple times going ask if you could use a buggy and show it to them so they understand what it is... They most likely won't care much if
they've been letting you out there, their tractors don't do damage so the lil a$$ bug isn't gonna do #@%$#!... "ONE BIG THING, "DO
NOT" LEAVE ANY STAKES OUT THERE FOR THEIR LAWN MOWERS TO PICK UP" or any thing else for that matter...
I wouldn't offer it, but if it comes up, tell them you be willing to sign a release of liability form if that would make them feel better...
Good luck...
Happy flying...Bladerunner - 19-8-2008 at 08:47 AM
It is better to beg forgiveness than to ask permission ?

Next time I'm down that way I'll stop in and ask them. Only thing is, it's a sod farm for golf course grass, not sure what kind. I'm just hoping it
isn't some sensitive grass.silvereaglekiter - 19-8-2008 at 10:12 AM

gun laws in virginia don't work like texas. You have a right to own it, but if you use it when your life or someone elses life isn't in jeopardy, and
YOU go to jail! Shooting a tresspasser is 1st degree homicide. Heck ,if you are in your house, and a man comes in your back door. If you have the
means to escape, then you had better not shoot him or you go to jail. This COMMONWEALTH SUCKS! :puzzled:
Damn criminals got more rights stealin your stuff, livleyhood ,etc.,than you do to stop em' No wonder crime rates keep gettin higher, DUH!
And I know the farm you speak of, saw it last month when I went to jockeys ridge,Had the same thought too. I would go with ya to talk to em'
,maybe give a little demo of what it is. Maybe they might think its cool and would give it a try!WELDNGOD - 19-8-2008 at 06:32 PM
