St. Simon's Island

Dax - 23-5-2008 at 05:13 AM

I'll be out on the beach at St. Simon's Island, GA tomorrow trying to tame my Beamer III. I'm staying in Kingsland, GA this weekend for a family reunion, but will be at St. Simon's tomorrow before heading all the way down to Kingsland. If you're out there and see a skinny white guy with tattoos attempting to fly a red/white/black Beamer III 3.0, approach me! :D

That sounds fun but we have family coming in to camp with us at the lake. We will be flying tomorrow but you will prolly have better winds. Become "1" with your kite. Learn to anticipate what its going to do even before it has indicated that it was going to do it. Angus and I were flying at St. Augustine back in April and a guy walked up interested in the kites. Angus was talking to him and they decided to let him fly the blade 4.9 since the wind was so low. He was doing fine since he had been flying a trainer kite up the beach before. The kite did something as a cue to the knowing and at the same time, Angus and I said "its about to power up!" and then it did. This intuition puts you one step ahead of the kite and much more in control. You'll know when you get there. Hours in a steady beach wind will put you on your way to "oneness" with your kite.

Any particular reason for St. Simons? Jekyll Is. is closer and the beach less crowded. That being said, NOAA predicts NW winds, and the East Beach sand bar might give you a good exposure out of the lumpy over-land winds. Low tide will be late in the afternoon, offering lots of room. Good chance of rain, though.

I am definaltely going out Saturday to Jekyll for what are predicted to be NE winds. If the seabreeze is up and pulls the wind off the water, then I'm good for a park and ride in the bug. No rain predicted.

Will have the brand new Corssfire II 5m and Flexi Blurr 5m, plus the usual suspects.

In any case, welcome to the Golden Isles and enjoy the weekend. . email: angus "at" coastalwindsports dot com 912-265-1149

Hey Angus,

Will you be doing a "write-up" after flying this weekend. I would love to hear your comments on the Cross, Blurr and Reactor and how they compare/differ!

We did end up going to Jekyll. I was out with the kite on Saturday and Monday. It was a blast!!!

Now to get that 5 m kite....

Sorry I missed you. Went out Sunday late. Kite Beach on Jekyll was the most crowded I have seen. But Low tide was 7pm and by 5pm the kiddies go home for dinner and I had a couple of miles to myself. zoom zoom.

acampbell - 15-7-2008 at 12:18 PM

I'll be out Sunday afternoon. Low tide is 4:47pm which is good as the beach starts to clear & there should be a sea breaze. Will be on Kite Beach in front of Blackbeards.

[Edit] That's on Jekyll BTW, not St. Simons (too crowded)

Arrghh! :ticking: I just tried to fly some and give Crieke's kite trike a spin. Made a few passes but the wind was just too finicky to have alot of fun with. I'm jonesing for a day at the beach with some steady winds and long cruises down the beach. I gotta find a hole in my calendar before JIBE to get some serious flying time in. The Beamer was my only kite that wouldn't tuck and roll today. Not enough wind for it to move me around though. JIBE will be here soon enough worst case. You guys have some extra fun for me on the beach.

So far, forecast is for S or SW winds, but it is still too early for a reliable forecast.
If it is sunny, the sea-breeze should help swing it aroung from the water. Bring your Beamer, but I have a trailer full of ripstop for different conditions, too.

Looking forward...
