Only Kiter in Kansas???

soccerflyer - 18-4-2008 at 04:52 AM

Am I the only guy interested in this sport that lives in the middle of Kansas?

I would love someone to meet up with and help me out a little.

DAKITEZ - 18-4-2008 at 08:23 AM

I was thinking you might be the only person who lives in the middle of Kansas  leave alone the only kiter

lunchbox - 18-4-2008 at 08:31 AM

A little off topic, but how's the wind in Kansas? I think I read recently that Dodge City is one of the most consistently windy places in the U.S.

soccerflyer - 18-4-2008 at 12:56 PM

Hey Now, there are like 5 other people that live here with me

I am still learning, but I think the wind is pretty flippin awesome here. I hated it when I first moved out, but maybe now I have found a reason to enjoy it. It is between 8-15 almost every day. Is that good?

Any suggestions on a good kite with that situation? I am about to buy my first. I weigh 210.

WELDNGOD - 18-4-2008 at 01:10 PM

Remember what happened to Dorothy!

DAKITEZ - 18-4-2008 at 01:13 PM

8-15mph is my favorite.

soccerflyer - 18-4-2008 at 01:41 PM

What is the diff between the Blaze and the Legend. I am leaning toward a Blaze 3m for my first purchase. MAN, I CAN't WAIT ! ! ! ! !

soccerflyer - 18-4-2008 at 01:43 PM

Ya, I think I should change my name to Wizard of OZ. My last name is Osborn, and was nicknamed Oz growing up n e ways!

Hope I don't blow away though. :( Unless I blow y'alls way and can fly wit you!!! :singing:

Toto, I don't think we are in Kansas any more.

SCREWYFITS - 19-4-2008 at 10:15 PM

Hey soccerflyer...
Glad to see you mingling with others... The wind your gett'n is fantastic especially if its not gusty...
The Blaze 3m is a great kite and should do well in those conditions, you might get a lil over your head if it gets much more than that, right at first, Till you get a lil seat time...
I was telling you about the Legend 3m that my cuz got... he went out today an had a learning day with a buddy of his who has never flown... probably 15-20's with gusts +/- . well nobody got hurt but they went for some body surfing in a field of grass... just thought I'd share this lil story with you... the one thing they did right was to take a buddy... they even forgot to let go...
Well good luck with your choice, I think your in a decent category of kites that your looS-P-A-M-L-I-N-K-n at...

Screwy...

How about Windizard-of-Oz...;-)

WELDNGOD - 20-4-2008 at 03:26 AM

I don't let go, that's why I flip my bug every other month.

sodfarmkiter - 20-4-2008 at 08:41 AM

I'm the kinda guy that doesn't let go either.

NPWfever - 20-4-2008 at 09:29 AM

I forgot to let go yesterday and got lofted down a hill. :D Good 15 feet up and 10 seconds in the air. Oooopppss......

WELDNGOD - 20-4-2008 at 09:33 AM

land well?

SCREWYFITS - 20-4-2008 at 07:43 PM

Well I don't let go either,:D but I did when I was learning... and I'd like them to have all the right info so they can make educated decisions...

I know my cuz doesn't relay info like I do he just says here grab these and hold on...:o

soccerflyer - 21-4-2008 at 08:12 PM

Thanks for the help guys. I feel like I am ready to try it!! Now I just gotta save up and wait till I can get my first kite. :( I hate waiting. :flaming:

I am pretty sure I will let go, at least my first several times out. I need to get some kite killers too, huh.

I learned to let go while water skiing. Man, you only hold on once doing that. I think I drank half the lake :frog:

WELDNGOD - 22-4-2008 at 06:01 AM

It's kind of like that on the beach, only grittier

soccerflyer - 22-4-2008 at 11:43 AM

Hey they are selling Pansh Blazes on e-bay. Say they are new. What is the Lira - dollar ratio?

How much are these in US? Is this a good idea? http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/PANSH-BLAZE-3m-KITE-Yellow-Blue-GREAT-...

soccerflyer - 28-4-2008 at 11:08 AM

I just realized that these cost more than Dlish is selling them for. Rats :-(

soccerflyer - 28-4-2008 at 11:14 AM

Wind question: If I get a Pansh Blaze 3M, and I weigh 215 -

1. What wind do I need to just fly it? What is the minimum wind?

2. What wind do I need to scud or body drag?

3. What wind do I need for it to lift me up?

4. What wind do I need to leave my kite in my bag and live for another day? :D

acampbell - 28-4-2008 at 11:30 AM

1. Probably about 8, 10 being better.
2. Drive it hard through the lower window and about 12 should do it well.
3. A gust towards 20 will do it. But a kite that size will not let you down easy. I've been spanked by a 3.5m.
4. Anything over 15 and gusty. After practice you will be fine in 15, 20 more if smooth and predictable air.

Thanks for your support. Have a done someone wrong that I don't know about ? I don't think you will find a cheaper kite than Pansh and I know you won't find a better price than you can get from me. I think maybe you should be looking for used kites if your budget is that tight.

soccerflyer - 28-4-2008 at 02:47 PM

I am sure you haven't done anyone wrong! I just like to shop! From what I have found, you are the best deal! Plus from what I have heard I trust you more than anyone else.

So I won't be able to even get the kite up in winds less than 8mph?

I just made a sale, and should get a bonus check. I am gonna try to talk my wife into letting spend $130. That should get me a Pansh Blaze 3M, and kite killers?

My next question will be what to do when I get the kite?

From what I gather I need to check the line lengths. And then stretch them? How do I do that?

then tie the strings onto the handles and kite?

Then fly?

Sthrasher38 - 28-4-2008 at 02:48 PM

Welcome to the forum sucker oh, I mean soccer.:D I say that because now you are caught in the kite trap!! 3m blaze is a great kite to start with you will love it. Are you ready to get another? you will be.

soccerflyer - 28-4-2008 at 02:48 PM

P.S. Thanks for helping me guys. I can't wait to feel my first kite in my hands!!!:D

Sthrasher38 - 28-4-2008 at 02:50 PM

I feel ya! You will be so hooked It will kill ya.

Most of my kites will fly in as little as 3-4 mph, but you have to work it or it won't move around much. At the 8 that Angus is talking about, the kite can be placed anywhere in the wind window without having to "work" the kite. It is where the kite actually starts to fly and is a good wind for a beginner. A little tug of war but you can hold your footing. In 4mph winds, you probably need some experience to keep it in the air. Also, this isn't finite. It is a sliding scale and a generalization of multiple kites. Experience will make clear what I've tried maybe not so well to explain.

soccerflyer - 27-2-2009 at 07:49 AM

I'm back and ready for more!! :wee:
I've gotten really good at flying my Blaze 3M. I can pretty much make it do what I want.

I am still working on flying it blind . . . :wink2:

How is everyone doing?

I am checking into getting a mountain board. Anyone know where I can get an affordable descent used one?

The hardest thing for me is holding on the those handles all day long, and I am thinking of getting a bar and harness. That should help right?

I am thinking my Blaze + Bar and harness + Mountain Board = :wee:   :eureka:

heliboy50 - 27-2-2009 at 02:27 PM

You're probably going to want to go de-power for board sports. If it's still available, there is an HQ montanaII full set up for sale on the forum for like $325. Send me a u2u with contact info and I'll look you up when I'm in Cheney next month.

soccerflyer - 27-2-2009 at 08:12 PM

You mean there is actually gonna be somebody I can meet up with?! :bigok: This is awesome!

soccerflyer - 6-3-2009 at 12:54 PM

AHHH! Of course he would be coming in the ONE weekend that I have plans I can't break! :flaming:

dylanj423 - 7-3-2009 at 08:33 AM

Hey soccerflyer... I just met a guy this week from Kansas. He pulled up next to me while I was coming in for a run. He had a couple of buggies on the back of his jeep, and we kited for a few minutes.

He said something about an abandoned Air Force Base that he regularly flies at... If you know where that is, I imagine you could hook up with him, and probably a few other kiters.

Good luck

JoJo1 - 7-3-2009 at 08:37 AM

His name is Brad and the abandoned airport is about an hour northwest of wichita Kansas. He is a nice guy that I sold my old libre stainless to. I have been up to the abandoned airport, but if you don't have lots of skill this will b a dangerous place for you especially if you can't do a tack turn you willl end up on your face sliding down a bumby ashalt road.

Big John

dylanj423 - 7-3-2009 at 10:51 AM

Thats the guy... nice dude. He did say that it was asphalt. He pointed out that the tread on his tires was from the spot. Hes put lots of miles on that libre.

soccerflyer - 12-3-2009 at 06:59 AM

Really?! Sweet! That is close to me!! Do you have any way to contact this guy?

I have heard of an abandoned airfield in Great Bend, but haven't made it out there yet. Was that it? That would be about an hour and a half northwest of Wichita. Is that the place Jo Jo?

I would LOVE someone else to fly with!!! :wee:

I have heard of a guy who flys and buggies in Hutchinson. I have tried to find him, but can't. I bet this is the same guy!!

JoJo1 - 12-3-2009 at 10:26 AM

Sorry, but i misplaced his number a few years ago and have not heard from him again. I was actually wondering if he was still playing in the sport. he was at DBBB alike 4 yrs ago, but I have not seen him since.

That sounds about right for the abandoned runways, but I can't say for sure by name as I don't remember the name of it.

Keep in mind that not much further distance to the south from you is the Oklahoma City group and field. We have a nice group of kiters here and a great field next to the lake that we buggy and a few board and also have probably 100 or so kite boarders that kite the lake as well. If you ever want to come down give me a shout and I will give you some directions.

Big John

kitemaker4 - 12-3-2009 at 11:08 AM

When Brad came down to Galveston about 6 years ago I talked with him about the air strip that he buggys on. It is located out of Huchinson Kansas and it was used by the city untill they outgrew it. It is an old military base and the city welcomes people to use it. Brad's user name of another kite forum that does not exist anymore was jungletommy. I wish I had more information to pass on.

Susan (npw goddess)

kitemaker4 - 12-3-2009 at 12:20 PM

I just remembered that I have an old e-mail address. I am not sure if it is still good but worth a try. Send me a u2u if you want it and I will pass it on.

Susan (npw goddess)

soccerflyer - 13-3-2009 at 06:26 AM

Hey Jo Jo, thanks for the offer. I will probably take you up on that! OK city is only about a 3 hour drive or so from here.

I will check on dates. I would still love to track this other guy down too. Would still be fun to find someone in my area to kite with.

Susan - U2U sent.

Glad we could help

gbboy - 27-4-2009 at 06:24 PM

Hey! I live in Kansas City and am purchasing my first kite tonight. Peter Lynn twister 5.6 How was the pull on that 3.0? Enough to drag you around a bit?

5.6m for your first kite? Thats a bit large... Please be extremely safe with that thing. You can easily hurt yourself and others with one that big.

soccerflyer - 30-4-2009 at 08:02 AM

The Blaze 3M did drag me around a LOT in the right winds. It actually kicked my butt one time - and I put it up.

I am still scared of my Ace though! I am waiting for some lighter winds to fly it in and get used to it.

Gbboy - I got your U2U and sent you an e-mail.

So, Brad never e-mailed me back! I was so excited to fly with an experienced flyer. If anyone sees him let him know I would like to hook up with him. He even offered free buggy lessons!!!!!!!!!!!!

tennisllama - 30-4-2009 at 01:37 PM

I live in wichita too and am really interested in getting a kite. I want something that I could kitesurf and landboard with. Is there such a thing? I also don't want to end up buying two kites. I want something decent that will let me learn and still be able to shoot myself up in the air.

Sadly enough that's what we all wanted when we started the sport. . . Some company that can come out with a kite like that would make some big bucks :).

The best advice I can give, that I received as well, was get a small 3-4m 4 line kite, learn, and that kite will eventually be your highwind kite. I've heard great things about the HQ Scout, that u can probably get and kite landboard with and have it as your first kite?

tennisllama - 30-4-2009 at 02:24 PM

Okay, so one of the Scouts would probably be fun enough and be able to get me up in the air? I am really excited for this and just wanna make sure if I blow $300-$400 bucks that I get something that will always keep me busy! And then I would have to also buy a darn board too, and from what i have seen they arent very cheap either??

tennisllama - 30-4-2009 at 02:40 PM

If anybody that goes to lake Cheney comes across this, i would love to come out and watch and meet up with you just to see how this stuff works. Ive seen you guys out there alot so i know you are there somewhere. Thanks!

soccerflyer - 30-4-2009 at 06:55 PM

I have had this thread up in this forum for a year now and have only found one person in Kansas (besides you now) who flys and they are around the Herrington area and they won't return my e-mails now.

You should meet up with me sometime and I'll let you fly my Blaze 3M. That would be a good kite for you to get a feel for a 4 line traction kite and it is easy to fly for beginners. I have been flying it for a year now and I still really enjoy it. I am just glad to finally start seeing some people in my area that fly!!

We need to find out when those dudes fly in Cheney and catch up with them!

tennisllama - 30-4-2009 at 07:56 PM

yeah what are you doing this weekend?

soccerflyer - 1-5-2009 at 06:00 AM

My sister in law is getting married soon and so I am going to watch my son all day Saturday while my wife helps her do wedding stuff. There is a 50% chance of rain all day Saturday anyway. I would like to go out to and try a new place I found in Hutchinson on Sunday. But there is a 30% chance of rain then too. I will be out if there is decent wind and no rain on Sunday afternoon. You can come and fly with me if you like.

tennisllama - 1-5-2009 at 06:57 AM

Yeah the weather isnt lookin to good, even a little cold. I would like to come fly with you though sometime that would be great, we will just have to wait and see about this weather though.

tennisllama - 2-5-2009 at 09:29 AM

Hey, I am super interested in you letting me come watch/maybe fly your kite, but at least this weekend I can't drive all the way out to Hutch, as I still have a couple weeks left at KU so I will be needing to get back there. But definitely we will meet up soon!

soccerflyer - 2-5-2009 at 09:57 AM

No problem - any time - just let me know when you are gonna be in the area . . .

hamaidan17 - 3-5-2009 at 08:14 AM

soccerflyer As i have some experience about kites for the bigginers a flexifoil bigbuzz is an excellent choice

soccerflyer - 7-7-2009 at 01:51 PM

How do I move this thread to "Meet Up" ?? I created it back when I started and it should have been posted there originally.

I finally got a hold of a guy named Brad who kites in this area!!! He says he has about 10 kites and two buggys! He is gonna give me some buggy lessons when we can get our schedules to work out! I am soo stoked!!!!!

soccerflyer - 17-7-2009 at 02:18 PM

YEA!!! I found a kiting group in KANSAS!!! It only took me a year and a half, but I found em! The Mid Kansas Kiteboarding Association!

It is a whole group of guys who kiteboard on some of the lakes around here. And they give lessons!

Guess I better start saving for kitesurfing gear, huh?

Well, I got to go buggy with him at the old airport. It isn't completely abandoned. They still use one runway sometimes. But all the rest is for us two kiters!!!!

The airport is about 2 hours North East of Wichita. It was an AWESOME place to buggy at!!! It is near a small town called Herington.

I got to sit on that Libre buggy. It is sweet!! He used it and I used his other Flexi buggy.

It was awesome and I hope to go out again soon! Finally it is paying off to live in this state! :singing:

soccerflyer - 27-2-2010 at 07:58 AM

I found another kite buggier here in hutchinson!! That is 15 minutes from where I live!!! He is retired and has invited me to kite buggy with him any time. He has two buggies and will let me use one. This is GREAT!!!! Just what I've been looking for.

I had heard rumors of one here. When I tell people about power kiting they are like oh ya I have seen somebody do that. I'm like where?! They are like oh in Hutchinson. I have driven by the spot where they say they see him like a hundred times looking and not seen him till yesterday. I was driving by and saw a kite in the sky. My heart jumped!! Then I got closer and sure enough he was on a buggy. This is so great. It is so much more fun to fly/ride with a friend.

Chicagokitejumping - 25-4-2010 at 11:05 AM

Hi , i would like to try Kansas , i do kitelandboard , i have a couple of friends with kites there , but they dont know any location for landboard and buggies

Dlschmidt89 - 20-9-2012 at 07:38 AM

I do realize this thread Is 2 years old. But I have just recently bought a trainer kite and started landboarding. I live about an hour straight north of Wichita. I've heard of the old airport but never been there. And I talk to a few guys that kite Cheney regularly, but I don't have kiteboard gear so I've only gone to see them once.

flyjump - 21-9-2012 at 04:56 AM

I'm just next door in Missouri, let me know and I can pop over for a weekend.

KCKITEFLYER - 10-10-2012 at 08:45 PM

Im up in KC

MC PREZ - 20-12-2012 at 10:32 PM

Soccerflyer are you still kiting? I just found this site and see your last post was in 2009. I live in the Omaha area and saw my first kite skier today and would like to git involved. Like Kansas we get some pretty good winds here also. Any info would be great.
