My new favorite flying field

BeamerBob - 27-2-2008 at 10:12 AM

There is a new (opened in the last 6 months) soccer complex about 5 miles from my house that is about the highest altitude for miles around. If you get on a high hill somewhere and look in the right direction, you can see the lights sitting up there by themselves above every thing. This field is a quad soccer field making a large rectangle and the fields are only separated by a grade level concrete sidewalk. Bottom line is that it is about 1/8th mile long with a very clean west wind prevailing.

So I'm flying some kites the other day and a guy walks by and then stops. He says "so are you up here flying kites alot?" I say that I've been there 8-10 times or whenever the winds blow. He says he thinks he must've seen me most of the times I had been there and that he works there. (I'm getting worried about where this is going at this point.) He points to the west where the rules signs are and says see that right there? I nod yes. He says "it only stops moving for 15 minutes at sunrise and at sunset". The rest of the time it is moving. Now I realize he is talking about the flag and not the rules sign that says only approved activities are to take place there. Turns out he thinks it is a cool activity and appreciates me being there doing stuff with my boys.

Sure enough I went up there yesterday when there was absolutely NO wind at home. Nice 6-8 mph breeze at the soccer field. About the time I got the lines attached for a final check flight on the Blaze I just sold to RonR, the winds picked up to 18-20 and about 200 kids with parents and siblings showed up for the 6:00 soccer games. After a 3-5 minute flight, I just grabbed everything up and headed out to get out of the way. Looks like I'm safe for now. It's nice to know that there is somewhere the wind almost always blows with no obstructions close to home. :singing:

flying spot

PHREERIDER - 27-2-2008 at 10:47 AM

sounds like a good spot. today it would definitely be a hot spot. any turf farm spots in the area i'm in the hilton head area?

lunchbox - 27-2-2008 at 12:08 PM

Man, that sounds like a great spot....probably get some good lift near the edges with that new Blade you're going to buy....:singing:

Got some pics of the park to share with the group?

BeamerBob - 27-2-2008 at 12:18 PM

I don't know where the sod farms are in the area. I know there must be hundreds of acres around somewhere though.

BeamerBob - 27-2-2008 at 12:20 PM

I will look on the county website and see if they have aerial photos yet. It doesn't show up on Google Earth yet. I can take some of my own from ground level with a kite in the air. Word has it there is a Blade with my name on it heading across the pond today or tomorrow. Arrives at Jekyll Island around Friday.:singing: I could take some pics before the Blade makes it. Maybe Saturday.

domdino - 27-2-2008 at 02:32 PM

I'm jealous :D
sounds amazing though, i'm glad someone nice and responsible is flying on it too :)

BeamerBob - 27-2-2008 at 06:16 PM

No photos on the county website either. It is a tree covered hill in all the aerial photos. I'll get some perspective shots on Saturday. I have a cousin coming in from Atlanta on Saturday that is ready to step up from his Symphony. He signed up here but is lurking at the moment. He has a great sense of humor. His handle here is "gotthewind"

And Domdino, thanks for the compliment. I try to be a nice guy and considerate of others. On the other hand, I don't want any parents or coaches complaining about "that guy that was flying that dangerous kite around the kids" and mess up things for me at paradise.

Great score Bob. I just found me a place to buggy up in N.Ga. Sometimes it takes a little time to find a good spot to fly.

Sthrasher38 - 28-2-2008 at 05:55 PM

Glad to hear that Bob. I know the glory of finding a new spot. I found a great school not to long ago close to home its nice And we have the sod field. And keep looking like you said they are there somewhere. Try a real estate search they have some good arieal shots of undeveloped land sometimes.

I'm a real hound when it comes to online mapping. I found a place to fly in the NW Atlanta area via google maps, but haven't been to my cousins yet to try it out. I am usually checking out the lay of the land of a vacation spot I'm going to in order to see where I might fly. Found a field beside the skate park my boys wanted to go to on Google maps as well as confirming that the beach would be suitable. ON WITH THE QUEST!

Dang Bob, You didnt mess around at all getting that Blade! Most people when they state they need to save up for something it take more than 3-4 days! I am happy for ya. I just hope you dont get the new kite no wind for two weeks curse.

BeamerBob - 29-2-2008 at 04:54 PM

come on Thrasher!:flaming: This wouldn't have been a problem if you hadn't brought it up! :rolleyes:Maybe it won't be a problem during the springtime. :wink2: I raised some money by purging the Pansh kites, so I've got a good head start. We don't live a lavish lifestyle so when something special comes along, we aren't already tapped out. The buggy is going to take some more serious saving now that I pulled the trigger on the blade though. I see a board coming along first.

Sthrasher38 - 29-2-2008 at 06:20 PM

Sorry, I take it back. I hope its not to late.:P

BeamerBob - 1-3-2008 at 06:24 AM

Any day for the next 2 months that I don't have wind, I'm gonna make sure you know about it!:ninja:
:wink2:

BeamerBob - 1-3-2008 at 06:36 AM

Kullas, I'm sure we will get together at one place or another. It's just a matter of where and when. Are you buddies with RonR that lives near you? He just bought my Blaze and is really excited about the power side of kites. He says he has over 30 sport kites now. The Blaze is only the beginning for him I'm thinking.

BeamerBob - 2-3-2008 at 07:10 AM

We had an awesome time at the Soccer field yesterday. Here are some photos. I'll make another post later telling my tales about the day.

Indeed thats a nice place to fly. looks like ya got some good jumps in also. what they going to say when ya get a buggy :spin:

BeamerBob - 2-3-2008 at 11:03 AM

The buggy won't work when I'm sharing the field with soccer players. I've only had company once before so I'm used to having the run of the place from corner to corner.

BeamerBob - 2-3-2008 at 11:29 AM

You guys won't believe this part of it. Richard, the guy I mentioned before about telling me the wind blew constantly there, came over as we were moving to another section of the field. I walked a kite over to the new section and staked it down. Then I headed over to get my kite bag and found Richard 2/3s the way across the field with my bag. He wasn't kicking me out of where I was, but just helping me. I let him know I really appreciated the help and that I certainly didn't expect it. He truly appreciates the muliti-use side of the park getting used. He senses that I realize I'm the guest there and want to fit in without infringing on the intended purpose of the field. Right now, things couldn't be better.

Hey guys,

Awesome that you've found some spots. Could you add the locations to localkitespots.com? Just put'em in the N. Carolina map for now, and I'll create a new Georgia map.

LocalKiteSpots.com is a free resource for kiters. By adding spots to localkitespots.com, the spots will be updated several times daily with 6 day forecast of wind, wind direction and temp. (just like the pay services).
