So close to the big Five O

SecondWind - 22-12-2007 at 07:24 PM

I had a fantastic session with the 8m Pulse 2 on skis today!

I traveled 37 miles total and my top speed was 49 mph - I so wanted 50. I tried and tried, but I kept coming in the high forties.

The winds were around 20 - 25 mph and there were some really big gusts on occasion.

I was on an old school pair of 195 slalom skis.

Got a few pics also

Need some more snow...there were some bare spots in places.

Congrats! That is a sick speed on skis! Makes me excited for the snow to fall here!

SecondWind - 22-12-2007 at 07:47 PM

Thanks Barnes - it felt pretty fast.

NPWfever - 22-12-2007 at 07:57 PM

Yeah 50 is pretty wicked, gotten that downhill but not on a kite, if you wanted to hit 50 you should have broken out the 19 meter flysurfer!!! LOL!

mach 50 that is.

I'm not sure what speeds I get downhill. I'll take my dads GPS when I go snowboarding next.. (probably tomorrow.)

B-Roc - 23-12-2007 at 11:05 AM

Awesome, ain't it DaVinch!

I may be getting my first session in tomorrow. We're expecting rain today and the snow is deep right now. Conditions won't be ideal for speed but soon.... very soon.

tridude - 23-12-2007 at 11:44 AM

very nice! That field gives you plenty of room for top end! Now all you need is that short tri fin directional for the lake next summer!

SecondWind - 23-12-2007 at 03:21 PM

Yeah...I'm hooked on speed now. I spent another 2 hrs today trying to beat 49.

Best I could do was 46.8.

Maybe a 8m Speed 2 is what I need

NPWfever - 23-12-2007 at 03:56 PM

DUDE!!!! Im telling you launch the 19!!!! Jk jk, well if you are hooked on speed..............

SecondWind - 1-1-2008 at 08:54 PM

Check out my max speed today - I thaught for sure it was going to get me above 50.

Too funny

SecondWind - 2-3-2008 at 03:45 PM

Yes  51.7 mph today!

The snow/ice conditions were not the best but the 8m Speed 2 is fast

Winds were around 20 - 30 mph and really gusty with a light rain.

I traveled just over 20 miles total.

This is probably the last time out on the lake this season unless it gets cold again. We’ve had temps in the 50s (F) this past week.

DaVinch -

That is incredible. And this is your second season on snow, right?
I presume you know about the Stormboarding speed rankings - http://www.stormboarding.com/speedranking0708.html. There are a couple speed demons in Minnesota who consistently rank in the top 5, hitting 56- 58. I think their fastest season times usually occur just before ice out in mid-late March, when the lakes look quite a bit like your pic. And the winds are nukin'. A lot of the wind has been missing us lately.

So big Six O next year?

SecondWind - 2-3-2008 at 04:10 PM

Thanks krumly!

Yes, this is my second season behind a kite on skis. But I skied a bunch when I was younger.

Yeah - 60 mph is my new goal

kiteNH - 2-3-2008 at 04:13 PM

Way to go Davinch! Very cool.

That's pretty darn fast. Are you a seasoned skier? I also see that you're using a pair of nice long straight skis. I'm guessing that's probably the best bet for speed runs on snow, no?

I think I'd have to invest in a full fact helmet if I was able to get going that fast. Guess they didn't name that thing "speed" for nothing!:tumble:

speleopower - 2-3-2008 at 06:11 PM

Wow! Kick butt! That's fast! I guess I need to fly up North and try the cold weather snow stuff for a change next year. It just scares me some since I've never been in snow except for a few minutes. I'm a tropics guy.

tridude - 2-3-2008 at 06:45 PM

schweet!!! So were does this rank you?

The old school slalom skis work well for speed runs

However, I still would like to try a pair of fat twin tips for the deep snow.

I had to get the full coverage to replace my old helmet (crash).

As for the ranking, http://www.stormboarding.com/speedranking0708.html

It only moves me up to 8th place. I even had two GPSs on me today to make sure my speeds were correct

krumly - 2-3-2008 at 08:48 PM

DaVinch -

You are up there pretty good on Stormboarding. You may need to head North to keep skiing, 'cuz I'll bet the fastest times are yet to come! From your earlier posts, it sounds like the wind conditions with the Pulse 2 8m were pretty close to your runs with the Speed 2 8m. You think the Speed has that much more potential? Your runs were only a couple mph different.

krumly

SecondWind - 2-3-2008 at 09:00 PM

The Speed feels like it has more potential for a higher top end.

Today, the kite was wet (rain) and it felt heavier than usual.

One thing that I did notice is how far upwind you can push the Speed 2s - really impressive!

I wish the winds were steadier today. I could catch a gust, but then it would die down after just getting up to speed.

I could have been on something a bit larger also - maybe a 10m Speed 2??

It's probably not so much the kite, but just being at the right place at the right winds/snow conditions.

I’m guessing this is my personal best for this season

lunchbox - 3-3-2008 at 09:14 AM

Way to go DaVinch....that is Faaassstttt!

Gotta ask though,,,do you ever think about falling when you're going that fast?

At my age (40) I don't really bend anymore and going even 20mph on the playa on a board makes me a little nervous. How do you overcome the fear?

SecondWind - 3-3-2008 at 09:23 AM

After my last crash, I definitely think about it more

However, I feel a lot safer going fast rather than jumping. Maybe I should just stick to the ground from now on

strictlycarved - 3-3-2008 at 11:18 AM

i got to say that dirt is more itimidating even thought ice and hurts worse. hey great speed davinch 50 is so fast. keep it up.

domdino - 3-3-2008 at 11:57 AM

at 50mph you should whack it back for a jump!!! :D
wow, can't imagine how high that'd pull you :):)

SecondWind - 3-3-2008 at 12:42 PM

I agree - I would rather crash/slide on ice than dirt

Joe won the top speed of the week on stormboarding.

A nice new DaKine wallet is headed his way.

Well done Joe.

I got an Ozone Wallet just for writing my name on a slip of paper at the Basecamp Tour in NY!

SecondWind - 4-3-2008 at 07:35 PM

Thanks PrairieWind! I still want to try the Nordic Skates again, but the ice has been too soft lately.

I think the wallet for going over 50mph is worth more...

Very true, but a free wallet is a free wallet!

Congrats Davinch! Thats some serious speed, and now you have a wallet to strike up conversation about it!
