Cold Temps & Beach Riding

KiteProject - 8-11-2007 at 07:37 AM

I have a question for the riders in the Northeast/Massachusetts area. Are you doing any beach riding (landboarding) in these temperatures? If so, how are you keeping yourself warm?

I wore yesterday my snowboarding clothing, and I managed just fine =] It was -1 here in Canada.

Layers! No cotton. Wind pants-sailing pants. Look for a loose fitting coat that stops the wind and has a zip out fleece liner. That is the most important piece of clothing that I wear for comfort.

I went out this morning [39*] and it was rough at first being the coldest day of the season so far. Once I got flying though you warm up quickly and it makes it worth it.

The wind sucked though- lumpy and full of holes. I felt like I was going to pull my back out on a gust so I said goodbye! Too risky.

I fly on the south side of the Cape and the winds were from the north today so it was an offshore wind- yuck.

I have not taken the buggy out in cold temps yet. That is done at Mayflower beach in Dennis, north side.

Are you still flying at Nahant?

I just realized I am a girly man,,,I think it's cold when it's 50F ;)

Anyplace "IS" nicer when its 75-80°, & a good steady 20mph wind... I'd settle for either right now, its currently 40° out & 0mph wind... Not enough wind, to even get the "Buster" up

If there is wind blowing it does not matter what the temp is for me. Just wear many layers.

I can't imagine much in the way of extreme cold temps in Louisiana. I guess cold is a relative thing though. Like how cold 50 degrees is in the fall vs. how it feels in the spring.

50 degrees with hight humidity feels a lot colder than if the humidity is low.

Warm jacket, sweater, long underwear, thermal socks, all the usual cold weather gear, some thin gloves, and rain gear as a windbreaker, if you keep the wind and moisture out you'd be suprised how warm you stay, last time I was out in the cold it was snowing and the beach was covered with ice/snow above the high tide mark.

I flew at Nahant in 40 degree weather yesterday (Saturday). Wind speed was between 15-17 mph, gusting to 20+ mph. It was cold. My goal was get out and fly any kite I could (after 6 weeks of no kiting) and test out my recently purchased WindStopper garments -- I purchased windstopper jacket and pants made by Mountain Hardwear. These garments can be worn as top layer in cool weather and insulation in extremely cold weather. I wore them as insulating layer under water resistant, wind proof top and bottom. Except for my head and face (which was exposed), rest of my body remained warm, dry and comfortable. After couple of hours at the beach, I called it a day becasue wind was dying and other kiter comrades were leaving.

Now that I have the right gear, I look forward to taking my kites out in the cold weather. Heck, if I can find a frozen lake, I am taking my skiis out.

Cold weather riding? What's that, we've been having some of the best sessions of the season this last week.

I was out yesterday for a little while and it was about 20 F with winds gusting around 25 mph. I was layered up and stayed pretty warm except for my fingers. I had wind proof gloves on, but my fingers still became freezing cold very quickly. I had to keep parking the kite so I could warm them up.

I think I need to look for a set that only separates your index finger and keeps your other three fingers together. I don't know if such a thing exists.

Commonly used by hunters. Try an outfitter's shop; ask for hunter's mitts. Be careful that both mitts have a trigger finger as some only have it on right hand and on some the ends of the finger are bare.
